  1. I tend to agree with @Damo above, I’d take it.

I love Petty and would be pretty shattered to lose him as I think he’s great when up and running, at either end. His journey so far has been very stop start, so he could be perennially injured.

Hypothetically, if we got pick one though, I’d go to North to split it rather than take Reid. Then we could grab two of McKercher/Sanders and Duursma and fill two gaps instantly, bringing the level of our whole 18 up, rather than just one player

    Haha.

    Soooo what are you saying?

McStay was a free agent and the pies went hard after him. So many pundits laughed at Collingwood's aggression to land him. I don't know what you're saying?

They got Billy Frampton for peanuts who ended up playing a pivitol role on Andrews in the granny.

All of this backs my point which is that supporters have nfi by wanting to hold onto players because they're emotionally attached.

Everyone thought Collingwood would be cooked both culturally and list-wise when Treloar and Stephenson left. And last year everyone laughed at them for their inclusions and the fact they pushed Grundy out. Look what happened? HELLLLOOOOO.

I think the MFC need to take a leaf.

Time to look FORWARDDDDDDD. Not just next year and the year after.

We've wasted two finals campaigns by staying stagnant.

Probably relevant to yourself and @DeeSpencer, the McStay deal was organised well before last year.

He didn’t just pop up, Pies played a long game to bring him home

Geelong would be a great fit for Harmes. Post Selwood & Smith, Dangerfield & Duncan slowing down and Menagola on the out. Harmes at his age could be an important transitional midfielder for them as their next crop come through. Could see him playing 50+ games for Geelong easy.

I don’t know if it’s a problem on my end but I’d take Menegola > Harmesy every day of the week.

What are the other clubs seeing?

Do people genuinely believe we’re a better side than Collingwood?

Like honestly believe that 7 times out of 10 we’d beat them, right here, right now.

Despite our best efforts not to be, I think we are. Collingwood ride the wave of their supporters very well and their discipline is excellent.

If we went at them with Petty at full fitness, I think they would struggle.

I also think we have serious flaws, like everyone else does, so that doesn’t say a lot for them.

I posted this in the rumors thread prior to the Grand Final, but it's a better fit here:

If I were in charge of recruitment I'd be focusing on getting in:

    - one or two quality high half forwards who are elite athletes and decent kicks (ie two more nibblers - who by the by was our best kick inside 50 this year in terms of kick to score ratio). Bedford would be ideal (yes I know he ain't going anywhere)

    - a mid size half forward/utility/mid who is an elite athlete, above average to elite kick, wins their own ball and kicks goals (the player type I'm thinking of is McCarthy and Bailey from the lions. Sparrow is our equivalent. We need more sparrows)

    - a distributor from half back (or wing or outside mid) with elite kicking and decision making skills who can reliably execute difficult, high risk kicks - even under intense pressure (salo and bowey have been these players for us, but for diff reasons neither were able to play that role to the required level this season. I'm thinking of players like locasious, Coleman and anderson)

    - a second ruck (I've got no idea who)

On the second point it is worth noting that in the Grand Final:

    • McCarthy and Bailey both kicked 2 goals and their combined 4 goals was nearly a third of the lions' 13 goals
    • Add Hugh McCluggage's 2 goals (he also had a match high 3 goal assists) and nearly half of the lions goals were kicked by mid sized non forward utility types
    • Half of Collingwood's 12 goals came from their midfielders

Our forward line 'issues' are a furphy IMO. All of our regular forwards, including Petty, are excellent set shots and pretty good from general play too.

The key issue, IMO, is the poor execution and lack of goals and goal assists from our mids and utilities (wingers, flankers etc).

I think throughout the year I also mentioned McCarthy and Bailey as the type of player we desperately need.

Half forwards who play as forwards first, are opportunistic and make their chances count. The Grand Final was the perfect example - I know they didn’t win but those guys (along with Joey) could not have done much more.

Coleman has quickly become the player every team wants. He is sublime.
If I was creating a team from scratch, he’d almost be the first player I would pick. He executed all the way through the finals too, very classy player.

I think Wanganeen-Milera from the Saints is similar, at least he had a patch this year where he was.

It looks like Reid/McKercher/Duursma could play the Bailey role from Round 1 and if there is any chance the Oliver trade happens, we are guaranteed at least one of that trio. The flow on effect from this positional upgrade would be enormous

Your obsession with untried 18 year olds is ridiculous. You were one of the posters last year claiming this draft would be a super draft when most were saying that's the rhetoric every year.

You also loved Weideman at draft time. You love potential, not actual proven elite AFL talent.

To say Reid has a more rounded game than Oliver when he's never played an AFL game is frankly laughable.

Having said that, in the long run, we may well be better off trading out Clarry and in Reid. But FMD, Reid's game is more rounded 🤦

I understand completely that we can never compare potential with known talent but it’s not like the known quantities (Trac/Clarry/Viney/Max) are suddenly going to improve their ball use. Chocco was bought in specifically to focus on this skill, Grundy has stated he’s never done so much kicking work in his life.

Also, many of the elite TAC guys have been training and preparing like AFL players for years leading into the draft, the jump is probably not as big as it once was. We’ve seen multiple first year players (Daicos/Ashcroft) transform their respective sides from year one.

If the Clarry stuff ends up going anywhere and we have the chance to snag 3 top 10 kids or 2 and a known player, I believe we’ll be much better for it in the medium term. I mean Trac has been parked in the forward half plugging a hole for half the year, he’s an immediate replacement for Clarry and you know he’ll be breathing fire in ‘24.

On Channel 7, Adem Yze said his focus for Richmond over the off-season would be kicking skills. I bet they hope he has more success with that for them than he had for us.

It’s become increasingly clear that the MFC acknowledges our kicking skills have cost us over the past few seasons and in particular, 2023.

With potential for significant change (Clarry out or a supercharged version) in 2024, there’s a hint of optimism in me. Just wish it didn’t take this long for the poor skills to be in focus.

I’d love a mini reset for ‘24, if we did lose Clarry and landed Reid + one or two of the other top enders, we’d suddenly have more scope to expand our game by finishing off the hard yakka.

The way we play the game seems to be emblematic of everything the club does,  we’ve taken the difficult path for as long as I can remember.

I’ll take apologies now.. THIS is what was coming, as paired couple wks back, of which, I confirmed this morning!

Picks 2+3 for Oliver & a later pick.

Clarry out for Reid and the choice of McKercher/Duursma/Watson/O’Sullivan in would be a very spectacular trade period!

Ballsy AF from a club that’s been lamented for its lack of dare for 3 years

I'd rather keep T-Mac. Reportedly his body is feeling good again and when fit and in form he is a very good player. We already have Schache for depth so I don't see why we would want to bring in Lobb.

If the finals version is his ‘feeling good’, I’d hate to see what he looks like with a knock or some soreness.

I’m starting to think McKay, at a high cost, is better than Lynch for a desperate Premiership attempt. I’d rather invest long term and let him grow with our group post Max, May etc

He can hit the wings and the neat goal kicking of Petty & JVR can stay closer to goal. Traditional CHF role.

I’d honestly prefer Finlayson than McKay especially with that price tag.

Even my Carlton mates want him gone.

I work with a reasonably thoughtful Carlton tragic, their supporters have wanted him gone for 3 years running.

Carlton played well with just Curnow as the main target.

McKay played his best footy when Curnow was out injured (in 2021).

DeKoning, Curnow and McKay not sure how that worked. DeKoning resigned.

I can see how this has some legs.

Harry would need to get his head right. Maybe he goes better when he is the main man.

That’s a whole lot of pressure to heap on Curnow in 2024, particularly with him being potted from everywhere about his poor finals series

I hope we're also looking at trading/drafting some new psychologists to get our guys' heads right in big games.

I know I'll be torched by some, but torch away. Truth is, we've gone out 2 x straight sets and the last 2 in particular were embarrassing wastes. Yes we had injuries (like other teams), but the horrible misses tell me we either genuinely can't kick for goal (which I don't believe), or we crumble under the pressure of the MCG cauldron - which is understandable. It's a lot. It's loud and intense. But we're not inexperienced. We're recent premiers with nearly the whole team still there. The Pies did not wilt, they kicked the goals they needed to, when they needed to. An interesting stat - would love to see if the Pies' total winning margins is the lowest ever for a premier - 7pts, 1 pt and 4pts. Shows how close everything it, but also, in line with my comment, shows that they handled the pressure.

Anyway, in all seriousness, I hope we're looking for a mental edge and obviously a new forward coach, as we do actually need help there, as well. Can't hurt to increase the goal efficiency/accuracy. I know this is also impacted by sloppy kicks in the midfield. Something Yze's replacement should address. Quickly.

Interestingly, Collingwood’s head psych/wellness employee sits on the bench for their games. They take it very seriously

Yes but the Tigers passed on him as their future head coach so he might have his limitations

And there are quite a few head coaches that are on the boundary now so we may be looking at all the chief assistants that are upstairs

So how many head coaches are boundary-side now?

How many roles did Yze miss out on prior to this?

At issue is that we are in effect possibly in need of another head coach (type)

Yze sitting in the stands with Goodwin on the bench points to an assistant like Yze would be making a lot of moves (or not) Maybe a lot of those moves are pre-planned but nonetheless, the type of assistant we might require isn't your normal run of the mill assistant

Or, we might revert to Goodwin back up in the stands if we go down another path (a new, midfield coach being just that, a midfield coach only)

It's all a bit vague though as we don't know how much responsibility Yze actually had

This seems like it’s made for McQualter, very influential at Tiges over their successful years, was interim head coach this year and went close to landing the role permanently.

He’s clearly well above a regular assistant
