Objective update on the probability of us winning our last three games

We have three games to go.

    The bookies have us at:

    • 1.72 to beat the blues
    • (by the by, prior to our crows win i estimated the price would be 1.70, so pretty close to spot on. What's interesting about the 1.72 price is prior to the last round the bookies had us at 1.60 to win. Why the drift? Punters might have assessed Petty out as a big factor. I don't, or at least not a determinative factor, and as noted in another post i think the price should be 1.65 for this match)
    • 1.21 to beat the Hawks (my estimate last week was 1.40, which i still think is about right, so 1.21 is well unders. Even if we win this week, i very much doubt we will start 1.21)
    • And I'm estimating our price for the Swans game will be 1.70 (which is probably a touch generous. 1.60 is probably more realistic. if we win our next two it may even be as short as 1.50)

    So 1.72 x 1.21 x 1.70 = 3.53

That translates, after our win over the roos, to the implied probability of us winning our final three games as aprox:

    • 28.6%

If we win this week, the implied probability of us wining our our final two games (and therefore our final 8 games) will be aprox:

    •  50%  (ie 2.00 or even money in the old)

Who pays you for all of this analysis?

Yes we will. I hope it's us but get sick of the back slapping in here that discredits their form or posters saying they're not worried. I think it will be a tougher game than KB.

Carlton is playing well and have some excellent players, there is no denying that fact!

I think our midfield will be too strong. Gawn, Viney as the leaders, Oliver coming back! Our backline is strong, it’s a premiership winning backline, and our forwards are coming back into form, particularly small forwards Kossie, Chandler and Trac playing forward.

I have more faith in our proven 2021 premiership players and team coming into form, than your belief in Carlton!

Have you not been watching? Removing Harry and SOS has made them far less predictable and they're getting scoring contributions across their midfield and small/mid sized forwards. We've also been conceding big scores.

Petty would have kept Weitering occupied but that's out. We no longer have a matchup for him (he'll destroy Melk).

Saints midfield included Steele and B Crouch amongst others, which compares favourably to our recent starting midfield of Sparrow and JJ. Viney a trump card, but no more than an equal of Steele who has come top 5 in the Brownlow 3 years running. Petracca in there tips us over the edge, but we don't have the luxury now we need him down forward. Oliver - who knows but I wouldnt take any bets on him playing. Even if he does, he hasn't played in 11 weeks and apparently hasn't been able to finish a training session.

Carlton are the best defensive side in the comp since round 10 by a huge margin. Have the Coleman medal winner, the reigning Brownlow medal winner, 2 rucks to smash into Max and they play the same contested stuff we do, are on a huge hot streak culminating from a player-led honesty session at an off-site camp. They broke through the 2nd best defensive side (St Kilda) with almost their entire starting midfield out of action and scored relatively well against them through their contest work.

It's us that will be worried about getting to 100.

You are underestimating our players! I’ll take our 23 this weekend against whatever the Blues put on the field!

    Who do you support?

  4. Just might be a season turning win! We’ve already been good this year and were well placed, but like the 2021 win at KPark against the Cats, must build awesome belief!

Fantastic to be at the “G” and see our leaders  in Max, Viney, Trac & Brayshaw step up in the last.

Bl..Dy Melksham what a left foot snap then a brilliant mark and pressure goal, absolutely fantastic and just great for him!

Rivers was also great in the last taking it on!

Kossie with 3 and a bit of his electric magic on show again.

Doesn’t it make the weekend feel GRAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In hindsight we were utterly dominant I'm 2021. Smashed the finals. 8 out of 9 against the rest of the top 5.

Geelong were also very dominant last year, however, they did have a close final against the Pies in week 1. On the other hand, they were even more dominant in their actual GF win.

Sydney had definitely played their GF the prior week, didn’t have anything in the tank!

I really don't get the big deal about a side choosing to send a player back to VFL to work on some things, plus also get a bit of a rest after coming off a 12 month injury.

It’s about making headlines with outrageous observations!

  7. Expected score is an indicator, Melbourne had control of the game from late 1st through 4th quarter, didn’t look like losing.

Last week against Giants should have been 5 goal win, that’s what it looked like!

  8. Saints are well disciplined, with a solid backline, within a goal per week of the best rated backlines. They definitely brought their best effort.

Demons below their best, down a little in confidence, but some positive signs:
    - Trac four straight,

    - May rock solid,

    - Saints only scored 58 points, our defence is finals strong,

    - ANB strong start to game,

    - Langdon a bit more involved,

    - Sparrow, Rivers, Brayshaw, JJ through the middle, providing options particularly when Oliver gets back,

    - Major room for improvement across the park. Kossie, Spargo, to lift, BBB show some positive signs,

    - Max/Grundy combo can improve, but not as bad as many make out,
    - JVR to come in with a little extra output for last 6 weeks,

We’ve got 6-7 weeks to bring it together!

  9. You look at our team:

    - Backline looks fantastic,

    - Mids even with Oliver out, still looks incredibly strong, like seeing Rivers in the mix,

    - Forward line, not as strong, still Kozzie a top small forward, time for BBB, Spargo & Melksham to shoot the lights out with accuracy, and big Maxy and Grundy kick at least one goal each.

Best of luck to young Woey all reports indicate he is highly skilled, if he can deliver could quickly tie up a spot in the 22!

Headed to the Marvel morgue tonight, hoping to see Demons salute!

    Go Demons.

  10. What I think will happen:

    Outs                                    Ins

    Fritsch - injured.                - JVR

Chandler - out of form      - Spargo

Harmes - played poorly    - Oliver

Goodwin rarely makes more than 3 changes.

Melksham sub maybe Jordan in. But with Fritsch out I think they will give Melksham another game as backup forward.

Tomlinson in wings for Petty forward if BBB doesn’t get going in next three weeks or if Smith totally inconsistent!

I’d rest Max in goalsquare Pickett next to him. Get BBB to be leading rather than pack marking FF. Also have Trac playing 50% in forward half.

Sorry, are we supposed to be impressed by these stats?

He may be holding his spot in this side, but compare him to the league and not his also-struggling team members, and you get a much more accurate depiction of where he’s at.

No, he won’t get dropped. Simply not an option. But if you’re trying to make the case that we should be impressed with his recent form, you’ll understand if I politely tell you to make it somewhere else.

So have you compared him to small forwards in the league. Go look at the stats per game.

I also think our defence is outstanding.  Not sure yesterday was one of their better performances.

I doubt there will be many positional changes as this is the time we and other clubs bed down the best 22.  Having said that Fritsch's absence will force some sort of forward group rethink.

    GWS scored 7-5 47!
5-15 with more misses is the problem!

The lack of a decent small forward and midfileders that can consistently hit a target is our biggest issue.

Why Chandler, ANB, Kozzie etc keep getting games is beyond me. The message it sends to the Casey lads is terrible.

Then the lack of mids that can actually use the ball is also telling. Tracc, Viney, Sparrow, Brayshaw  etc are great ball winners but ordinary users.

How many small forwards have kicked more goals than Kozzie this year, have more tackles etc.

It's very cold by Alice Springs standards. Yesterday was the coldest maximum June temperature recorded ever recorded there, reaching the lofty heights of 7.4 degrees and eclipsing the previous record of 7.7 degrees set in 1956 🥶

We won a flag in 56, hopefully a good omen!

I think one of the hardest things for fans to get their head around is the idea of a campaign that has as its goal peaking in September.

Goody has said a variation of this at least five or six times in post match pressers.

But his comments don't land, the instinct is to wave them off as coach speak.

I think people get the concept in the abstract (premierships are not won in june).

But not in terms of it informing their assessment of individual games.

We have all been conditioned to see every game as critical and as some sort of litmus test or accurate meaure of the chances of ultimate success.

Each game becomes a stand alone event unconnected to the arc of the season.

The dees get beaten mid winter by the reigning premier on their home deck, a ground they have a home ground advantage bettered only by the lions.

That loss confirms for many why we aren't a contender - despite the fact we had just vanquished the flag favourites.

And there is the attendant gnashing of teeth and criticisms of: selection (why bring an underdone petty in! Spargo as sub?), coach (why so many handballs?) and players (dumb - just get it forward, no skill).

But see the game as a stepping stone in our campaign and the perspective is different.

Petty is selected, despite being underdone because it is the best thing for his individual program (and therefore the team) in terms of peaking later in the year.

Or maybe they had been really worried Brown would not ever be fit enough to play the key tall forward  role. And decided they needed Petty up there.

Perhaps they got good news on Brown, changed course and decided they want Petty down back and wanted to give him as many games in defence as possible to get into the rhythm of the role. That might also explain why they didn't send him forward until near the end of the game after Cameron's injury.

There are better, more versatile options for sub than spargo, but as flagged by goody at the start of the year they will use the sub role for both tactical AND load management reasons.

Another sub might have increased our chances of winning this particular match, but the eyes are on the prize and spargo being in peak shape is an important piece of the puzzle. Give something up now and be rewarded later.

We have had real struggles in the wet with our ball handling, but want to be prepared to stick to our method of chaining out handballs come finals - even if wet.

So the direction is to continue to use handball in the cats game because the best way to embed something is apply it in a match.

We turned it over way too often and as a result, for one of the only times this season , we were outscored on turnover.

But perhaps the team was encouraged to take the high risk kick on because we they weren't encouraged to do so against the blues and pies games and they want to turn the dial a bit more to risk in this phase of the season to get us ready to play like we did rounds 1 - 6.

These are all guesses of course. But they are possibilities not considered if the game is  assessed in isolation, as a standalone, discreet event where the only goal is to maximise the chances of winning that individual match.

But at the end of the day, for genuine flag contenders the campaign is about winning the war, not the individual battles.

If our sole goal was to beat the cats, I am 100% sure a lot of things would have been done differently. Even our preparation might have been different - would we have experimented with the staying over night in Geelong stuff if that was an absolute must win game?

Of course they wanted to win the game, but there were other objectives as well - winning wasn't the sole goal.

And I think it is helpful to assess games, at this time of year in particular, through that lens.

Binman you use to much logic, stats, facts, and examples! You need more blind emotion!

Of course winning every week and focussing on the tactical each week at a time is of paramount importance vs who in their right mind would look at the season strategically with the flag in mind!!

Have a look at yourself man! Don’t you realise footy is an emotional game!

PS: Keep up the great analysis!

    Go Demons!

  16. It’s still June - I haven’t seen a AFL premiership flag awarded until September and on the odd occasion October!

Our injury list is small, assuming Oliver’s hamstring comes good and Hibbo recovers, we can hopefully hit August and September being very close to having a best 23 available.

We improve the forward line 10-20%, kick straight for goal and we are in this years flag hunt up to our eyeballs!

Pies are a very good team, but high risk might not stack up under PF/GF pressure!

Port on fire at moment, but how will their young guns in Butters, Rozee and Horn Francis be travelling in September and they don’t get home ground umpiring favouritism at the MCG on GF day if they make it that far!

Brisbane game style and having to play any finals in Victoria, sees them falling short.

Coming from position 5-8 is unlikely, no matter who it is!

As long as we stay relatively injury free and make top 4 we are right in the hunt for the flag, that will be won in September!!!

Dazzler, i haven't been true to my word as stayed out of the loading discussion this year. I'm trying though. Why?

Because of posts like the one above.

To be perfectly honest, i find comments like 'If you think there isn't far more pressing concerns other then your 'loading' fantasy then you're delusional once again. Bit like last year' flat out insulting (as i assume most would).

But leaving aside the puerile insults (which by in large i think you would agree i don't stoop to), i'm thoroughly over having my words and opinions on this topic being completely misrepresented.

There a million such examples in the last 3 seasons when this discussion comes up - the making excuses and some promise to win the flag  being the two most common variants. But this is yet another example (i mean who would think this, for all the reasons you point out - how stupid do yo think i am?) :

    • The fact that you genuinely think that the cats the just clicked their fingers and realised that all those years it was all just due to loading is a [censored] take from your end.

What really frustrates me is that i am hesitant to make a point, or post, about the impact of faitgue from loading, and hope to have some sort of nuanced discussion about it, for fear of being ridiculed and howled down by posters for whom the tipic seems to trigger some sort of irrational angst.

    But that's where we are.

Unfortunately at times people hear what they want to hear, and see what they want to see. No amount of proof, logic, stats, facts, sound bites etc. will matter.

Injuries killed the end of 2022 for us, and no injuries worked for us in 2021, plus loading kicked into our performance levels at the back end of the season and finals! Injury is the biggest factor, Moore and or Nick Daicos go down for the Pies and their flag hopes would be significantly reduced, in fact if both were out they would be done!

The query I have on loading is when you play other teams who should also be loading e.g. Cats, Port, Freo, Pies in the last 5/6 weeks can we still use loading as an excuse? I know we beat the Pies, kicked it away against Freo, stopped to a walk against Cats, and had Oliver been fit might have got home against Port. Also home town umpiring in the last helped Port & the Cats.

    Other issues apparent:

    - JVR well managed will suffice at CHF or FF but we definitely need one of BBB/Petty/TMac to get up & going.

    - Our forwards are playing too often from behind, not leading enough, and when they lead those leads need to be rewarded.

    - Oliver fit.

    - Tomlinson back shored up the defensive structure, Lever looked miles better. So seems like either Tomo or Petty must go back.

    - Bowey needs to play.
