Sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere but someone mentioned there had been discussion in the media that Anderson was not a lock at 2 and might fall to us as GCS will nominate Green at 2 and GWS won't match.

    Has anyone else heard this?

Every media report I’ve heard/read has stated that GC have already picked Rowell and Anderson. The AFL would not let GC not pick the two, picking two best mates was the excuse the AFL and GC “sold” to the public/media. Can you imagine how bad the AFL would look if GC changed their mind, the AFL will take away the rest of the concessions given to them in that instance.

In the highlights does he appear a lot bigger than those around him to you? He does to me, and clubs have been hurt in the past selecting someone who developed physically earlier.

In under 12-16’s maybe. Highlights are from U18’s NAB cup etc, he’s playing against other elite kids who are a similar size and development. He might look taller when playing in the midfield because he’s 193cm, playing against some that are only 178cm etc. ?

  3. Robertson is another in and under midfielder, I don’t see him being that brilliant that we can’t not pick him, just more of what we have. I’ve been in Young’s camp at 3, nothing’s changed that. At 8 I’ve been interested in Kemp or Ash, but I wouldn’t be to unhappy with Jackson if they believe he can impact as a forward. Only 28 more days to guess ??

Does he make a good choice for us then? I don't know much about Green, but they naturally compare him to a current footballer, being Cripps. If he's as half as good, he and Clarry would be a very good duo, with Kemp in there for x factor and goals. I don't mind it.

And no, Osilik, I'm not asking you. Yes, inside mids, blah, blah, blah.

Someone with an open mind, please.

The thing with Green is that his performances stack up. As one recruiter said recently, if Green was playing in the NAB League and not tied to an Academy, he would have been spoken about more as a No.1 pick contender. His performances for the Allies, leading his side in the midfield against highly rated stars each game, and his consistency for the GWS Academy team, adds weight to his efforts. A tall, big-bodied, strong and hard-headed midfielder who goes and wins the footy and gets it out. Likely to attract a very early bid for the Giants to match.

Based on the above, and if you were going to take best available, I think we’d have to seriously look at him. Personally I think Young might suit our needs more then Green, but if he has the potential to be the next Cripps, can you pass him up? From everything I’ve read though, GWS will match any bid on him, and his brother next year too.

FWIW, someone on a different Melbourne forum is claiming that our initial request from GWS in exchange for pick 3 was:

    Pick 6 + 2x further first rounders

Also says the players we’re mainly interested in are:

Young, Serong, Weightman, Gould, Kemp, Ash in that order

I hope he’s a nuffy who has no idea what he’s talking about then. ?

You could be right but I concur with the idea that it's quite possible Kemp won't be there at our next pick. I'd prefer Kemp over Young, but it'll be interesting to see what we do with pick 3.

And we have another month to keep guessing. ?

I don’t know enough about the kids to pick, only what I’ve read, but I do like the idea of having an elite kick coming out of the back half to set up attacks though. I actually think Kemp will slip through to our pick 8, just don’t know if we’ll pick him. ??‍♂️?

Kemp wont make it to pick 8

If GWS are forced to match a bid for Green, it only leaves Adelaide, Sydney and Fremantle to bid on Kemp. Adelaide might prefer one of the SA boys and Freo might look at Ash or Stevens after losing Langdon and Hill. Sydney might look at Sarong if the Crows don’t take him with the plan to replace Papley next year?

A touch of the oxymorons here but i like the cut of his jib. If indeed he is the best player at 3 then it is serendipitous as above all we need an elite kick and Young appears to be one and it removes all discussion about best pick of over filling needs. Love that he is a lefty too as i'm positive they have a slight advantage with opposition instinctively looking to cover the right side.

Did your mate indicate if he could move play as a mid? And any discussion about his ability to play AFL next season?

I listened to an Interview with Young, he stated that they (team he plays in) have given him time in the midfield but that he sees his best footy at halfback and believes that’s where he is suited to and where he sees himself playing at AFL level.

That’s not to say that the club doesn’t believe that he might push into the midfield, or that he might decide that he’d like to get into the midfield after a preseason or two.

  9. I think the old rule about not taking a halfback top 5ish is just that, old school. Look at the amount of teams that set up their attack from halfback these days, they say Young is arguably the best kick in the draft, good decision maker and can intercept mark. I’m looking at him replacing Jetta or Hibberd in the future and setting up a lot of our attacks. ?

I’m only going off the few highlights and draft reports though. ??‍♂️

How about a draft night trade...

picks 3 and 8 to Gold Coast for pick 2 and a later pick

We draft Noah Anderson and all is well.

I’d love Anderson, but considering GC’s main argument for being given pick 2 was to pick Anderson, who is good mates with Rowell, can’t see it happening.

  11. I know some on here hate stats, but I thought I’d compare Spargo and Papley’s 2018 season since a few really wanted Papley. They were actually quite even.

Papley played 20 games and avg - 1.2 goal, 1.1 behinds, 219.9mtrs at 68.8% efficiency.

Spargo played 18 games and avg - 0.8 goal, 0.5 behinds, 172.4mtrs at 76.2% efficiency.

They were the main stats, I know there's the whole momentum killer debate on Spargo, but I’m happy giving  him a chance to cement a fwd role next year.

I don’t get it. Admittedly I have only watched highlights but judging Serong’s highlights against Young, Serong looks a long way off.

Reminds me of Trengove. Super hyped pre-draft then appears slow, undersized and one dimensional. Happy to be proven wrong.

Young on the other hand has dash, a burst of speed and he is a goal kicking midfielder.

Young is mainly a halfback as I understand, in an interview he stated they pushed him up into the midfield but he believes his best footy is at halfback and that’s where he sees himself playing. I see him as our future replacement for either Jetta or Hibberd and would pick him over Serong.

(Disclaimer: Personal opinion and choice obviously and I can only go on what I’ve read and highlights as I haven’t seen any of the kids play in person ?)

  13. I’d bid on Green at 3, GWS will match the bid, then I’d take Young at “4”, elite kick and future replacement for either Jetta or Hibberd. With GWS’ pick 6 now moving to 3 and the rest dropping down one, only leaves Adelaide (5), Sydney (6) or Freo (7) that can pick Kemp before our pick 8, I’d be happy with taking the risk and picking Kemp. I wouldn’t be unhappy with Ash at 8 if still available either. ??‍♂️

It also moves our pick 8 one spot if we bid on Green.

Why? If we bid on Green and GWS match it, that will technically move their pick 6 to 3 whilst picks 3, 4 and 5 will move down a spot to 4, 5 and 6. Picks 7 and above will still stay exactly where they are.

  15. 2 hours ago, Moonshadow said:

Only pick Green with 3 if he's worth pick 3. They may let him pass, with the knowledge that the rank of available draftees moves up a spot.

However, if they do match a bid at 3 they'll use up pick 6, which means 8 moves up a spot.

From what I’ve read he’s highly rated and it’s believed GWS will match any bid on him. Not fussed if we don’t risk it though and take Young with our first pick

  16. Due to a Tigers supporter complaining on FB about the Tigers compensation for Branden Ellis, basically being the same that GWS got for Tomlinson, I compared the two. Both went in the same draft and both have had near identical careers, Ellis only averages 5 more possessions and goes at 1.3% better efficiency, but 75% of his possessions are uncontested, prepared to 66% for Tomlinson. I also think Tomlinson’s less possessions are probably due to all the different rolls he’s had to play?

(Maybe I should’ve posted this in the Demons useless facts?) ?
