Hope the club comes out very quickly with a statement to the effect - "our first preference was always to keep Jesse, he's a quality young man but he's been through so much in his life that if wanted to go back to be closer to family it was something we fully understood. That's why we entertained this in the first place, unfortunately while Freo through buckets of money at him they were unreasonable to deal with and we're keeping him and will be working on a long term deal".

Delisting, Trade and FA discussion 2018

Those 2 picks are worth 213 points or around pick pick 55, so maybe we could get a lower 50s pick but it won't be anything brilliant. These type of deals are the back end (steak knives) to other player trades, or will be the ones that get worked out after the player trade period finishes on Wednesday - there's an extra 2 days for picks to be traded. -

I actually think Maxy could go the other way and move more towards the backline. Not as a 1 on 1 defender but similar to what he did this year and really play as lose man filling holes. If BP (my nickname contender) can hold his own as a forward then switching them depending on the game situation could work very well - it's something that's not been seen at AFL level either. -
Some mentioned the salary cap relief and that's now a big thing, the AFL even admitted this year for the first time they'll allow salary cap dumps (done in the NBA all the time). So the $200k or so we'll save this year having Preuss instead of Tyson will allow us more cap to resign some of the guys coming out of contract next year (Salem, Weid, ANB and Melky being the most pressing - unless Hogan stays), or might allow us to go after a 'big fish' fish next year. We'll also have Lewis and Jones coming out of contract plus maybe some savings form Hogan so 2019 could be a big trading year cause we should have a heap of cap space.
-
I was hoping we might have been able to do that if we got pick 5 if Hogan goes. Maybe we could offer Adelaide pick 5 & 36 for picks 13, 16 & 21 (in points value about a 800 difference in our favor, but the move up the board negates that for Adelaide). If we go after May, be able to give pick 11 (assuming we got 5 & 11), and then 21, while we'd get May, KK and picks 13 & 16.
-
Guessing! I'd be happy with that as a trade though, very much doubt we'd be getting 5 & 6 this year like most want.
-
He plays much smaller though, and doesn't really have a burst to be able to stick on the key forwards. I do like him, but he's a tall back flanker or potential 3rd forward. His ball use is very good, in fact (wait for the outrage), he reminds me of Jack Watts when he went back a few years back, not sure if he's as good forward as Jack could be though.
-
I agree, he's not automatic best 22, but given he's flexibility he'd be more than handy. He could easily be one that's actually a better forward than back, but that's where he started. He should come cheap as it seems like another salary dump from the giants, so if we could pay a 3rd rounder he'd be worth it.
-
Very different player to May, wouldn't be a key back (at least not for a while), he has the height but plays more as a 3rd tall. Does have a very good kick and is capable forward, so wouldn't be against it, but he's no key back.

Aaron vandenBerg not going - signs a new deal!!!

Swans need points for Blakey, so won't be giving anything up this year I would have thought. Maybe it'll be a future pick, or player (Nic Newman now he's not going to Nth??), I'd say this will be a late trade so we'd have to wait and see what else they come up with first. -
Settelfield will be for a 2nd rounder next year
-
Somewhat reasonable (but the club would be a little more subtle I suspect), I'm sure they might have said we'll give you a similar long term deal that Freo are offering so we don't have to do this again next year otherwise if we get a great offer we'll move on it because you'll be out of contract and the 'noise' could be very unsettling next season.

If we gave pick 100odd, and Freo paid most of his salary, then I'd say yes, but only if we were allowed to put the following conditions on him (if he breaches one then instant dismissal/retirement): - He has to live with a member of the football department (Viney, Macca etc.) I know that younger players sometimes do (in particular those from interstate) - He has to agree to an alcohol ban, and be tested at the discretion of the club (of course his issues have included other substances, but that's ASADAs place to test). - He has a curfew of 9pm, unless prior permission is given or out with multiple team members (including if he goes home to visit family). - He follows all team rules and if anyone in the FD feels he is not pulling his weight or is disruptive he's out. If he can do this for the full pre-season there's a chance the switch might reset and he'll fulfill his potential, if he can't commit to this then he doesn't come to the club. If he slips up then we haven't wasted much -

There is some talk that Lycett is trying to stay at West coast now, meaning they probably won't want either Lobb (should be discussed in the Hogan thread really) or Roughead. I know we were linked with Roughead very early on, so maybe he might come into the picture. More than a handy backup and also can play back. -
Seems well advanced and that there won't be any issues - quoted from AFL.com.au Another Sun on the hunt for a new start is defender Kade Kolodjashnij, and it looks certain that he'll be at Melbourne next season. Kolodjashnij missed the final 10 rounds of 2017 with concussion symptoms after copping a head knock at a training session in mid-June, which forced him to wear a helmet when he returned to the field this season. He missed more games this year because of the problem, before specialists revealed in June that it was a neck issue and not concussion symptoms causing Kolodjashnij's horror run. The 23-year-old played four of the last six games, but Cameron said the club had encouraged the half-back to look around for a new home, when they sat down to debrief the season. "He suffered a bad concussion (in 2017) and he's really battled with that," he said. "He got it together towards the end of last year and played some footy, (but) his confidence took a hit as you can imagine, dealing with that. "We just think that it's a good opportunity for him to explore other avenues to continue his footy. "We've spoken to his management and we've had some preliminary discussions with Melbourne, so I'm pretty confident that we'll do a trade for Kade pretty early next week."

Distinctly different tone that what Mahoney used when discussing Hogan. Could be the state of their club, but I'd like to think it's just that we've got better operators in place. We seem much more realistic about how the whole trading scenario's could work, rather than just being so defensive about everyone. -

So the AFL just introduced mid-season rookie drafts and also the ability for clubs to replace seriously injured/retired players right up to the start of the season. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-10-04/afl-brings-in-midseason-rookie-draft-for-2019- Do teams such as us (Lever) or West Coast (NicNat) who have guys with existing injuries get the chance to bring in a rookie, or will it only be for those guys who get injured/retire post the trade/draft periods? Would nearly give time to audition someone then discard if no good once that player comes back, like the old rookie system, except they don't get to stay on the list?? -

On one condition - he never ever gets to see the best of our medical team. Tell him to bring his own tape/dencorub, and to only ever bring his medical issues to the intern/trainee. They'd get a huge amount of experience and our best medico's can concentrate on guys who'll get out on the park. -
What Makes a De$tination Club?
Red and Blue realist replied to pewpewpew's topic in Melbourne Demons
Successful clubs have always got the best of the players who move - Danger to Geel, Buddy to Swans, Lynch to Tigs etc. I don't think the lower clubs were afraid to make moves, the issue was that players choose the most successful clubs. It's a big issue in the equalisation the AFL wants, often lower clubs have to pay a lot more for NQR's just to met salary cap demands, I remember someone connect with the club once saying with Dawes contract that we had to pay someone. -

Getting Preuss as well, so that'll leave another 8 (or 6/7 if we go main list short). IMO From a list perspective our most pressing needs will be a small lock down defender (Jets not getting any younger), key position forwards, speedy half forward/wingman and as always mids. We've got Bradtke and Guy Walker as Cat B's as well. -

Naturally it's a lot easier to get players in when you are successful, a lot of players will sacrifice $ for the chance of a premiership. Does that make you a destination club or just a successful one? If Hawthorn crash and burn from here will they still be a 'destination club' in 3/4 years, who knows, plus there's heaps they have also been linked with but never went there, just Lynch is the biggest this year - Carlisle, Prestia, Wines, Wingard etc. What I was saying is that destination club is a term used by ordinary media performers to hype up any club doing a trade (if it suits their narrative at the time), we became a destination club because we got Lewis, last year Essendon and Port were because they got a few in. Nth, Brissy, Freo, Saints are apparently this years destination clubs. -

So far only 1 guy potentially gone from our prelim team (AVB if he does go), and 1 who automatic best 22 (Hogan and he's still a maybe). I think we need at least 30 decent AFL ready players to content and we finally had that this year - the 22 in the prelim, plus Hogan, Lever, Fritsch, Stretch, Kent, Hunt, Vince, Peds and JHK. From that we're only losing AVB, Vince, Kent and Peds and quiet possibly Hogan. The others going are really just the deadwood end of depth. So we'll need only another 3 or 4 guys to either step in or step up to complete a squad that should again challenge. I'm hoping Petty, Baker and Maynard are guys to really step up to get in the team conversation, and that we get big improvement out of Weids, Hunt, Hannan, Stretch and Garlett which will ensure we stay in contention, plus whatever we add in the trade to immediately push to be in that squad. We'll always have guys who are developing or have been in the system for a couple of years and go no further, but we've lost some depth now but we're not in a bad position at all. -

There's no such thing as a destination club, that's just media BS to hype up whatever agenda their trying to get through at the time. Each year there are more than 30 players (normally a lot more) who change clubs, either through trades or free agency, some are superstars some have other uses (role player, depth etc.). Given the media is currently driven by a heap of people trying to stay relevant to stay employed - Kane Cornes, Dal Santo, McClure, Llyod, etc, etc. They throw up terms like destination club, even if it's just getting a role player like J.Lewis for us a couple of year back, not downgrading Lewis' contribution (overall not in the prelim), but he was no longer a star when he came to us, but has been more than handy.
