  1. I’m at the ground and watching Petty run around like a headless chook.
Not only does he not offer a target, his opponent (Miller) runs from him with ease. Yes, I know he had no preseason and he has already had more disposals than he had last match (3 cf 2).

  2. Great commentary guys. I’d given up on any chance of Fullerton making the grade given the numerous negative assessments leading up to this game.

Licking my lips at the thought of McAdam and Kosi lighting up the ‘G sooner rather than later.

I'm sorry but Hunter hasn't shown me anything that makes me think he's better than Windsor or Langdon in the seniors

No need to apologise. I’ve never be a fan. Not sure he’ll be on our list next year.

Wishful thinking for this week but imagine this Forward line being rolled out

HF - McAdam, van Rooyen, Neal-Bullen

    F - Fritsch, Petty, Pickett

I like it but who takes Roo’s spot when he’s rucking if Max is on the bench or resting half back?

I appreciate the feedback from Casey watchers that Fullerton is not ready, and may never be. It sounds like Verrall may be the back up ruckman IMO we desperately need.

Bold, caps, underline. Are you trying to make a point WCW?
Maybe 14 or 16pt text would help to make it clearer. Just saying’ 😀

Not possible that there's anyone softer [than Schache], never seen anyone in 60 years watching football.

Four games* for us, 14 disposals, 4 tackles, 2 hit outs, 1 goal. We've played a man short in those four games.

    Unused sub in one game.

  7. We have shown we can cover most positions on the ground when we lose a soldier - Clarry, Gus, May, Fritsch, Kosi etc.

The only time we lost Max we had Grundy to step in.
Currently we have not one player to step up as first ruck. It just needs to be someone big and strong who can compete.

Who knows, our mids may win more clearances playing with a losing ruckman.

if it comes down to Schache or an untried Fullerton I’m voting for the latter.

    ......

Lets say he can only take 80% of ruck contests. That would mean De Koning going up against Max in 10% of ruck contests, which gives us an edge.

As an example of what i mean this is the Lions ruck numbers when we played them:

    Ruck
    Contests
    Hitouts To
    Adv.
    Oscar McInerney 87 26 8
    Joe Daniher 13 1 0
    Darcy Gardiner 2 0 0
    Eric Hipwood 5 0 0

(Note: probably a bad example in the sense that we got smashed at stoppages, but there were other factors at play and Maxy's hitouts to advantage were bang on his season average).

It's not a bad example because almost every game Max plays he dominates the hitouts but we lose the clearances or they're close to even. That was the case in the two games we lost to Carlton last year.

I wasn't suggesting Max rest forward. He appears to be resting on the bench or spending very short stints across half back whilst JvR rucks forward of centre.

JvR is listed as 96kg. Witts, Briggs and Pittonet are listed as 107, 108 and 110kg respectively.

JvR can't be expected to alternate, albeit for short periods, between CHF and ruck where he's competing against men 10, 11 or 12kg heavier (and taller, and stronger).

Yes, I know he may be up against the opposition's second string ruckman, but not always.
And if Max goes down, then what?

I'd prefer to blood Fullerton this week rather than against strong and experienced opposition.

The alternative is to wait until the Eagles game (and that match might be tougher than we thought 2 weeks ago).

  9. I'm death riding the Crows solely for the reason that a move there by Petty could be less appealing, more so if we were to make a PF.

BTW the Crows had picks 8 and 17 in the last draft, and I very much doubt that a pick/s swap for Petty was considered.

We have just had a 13 day break and will then have a 10 day break. Now is not the time to give Max a chop out.

It's not about giving Max a chop out.
Rather it's the fact that our following two opponents (Cats and Blues) have genuine ruck combos - Stanley/Conway and Pittonet/TdK.

And I'll repeat myself - JvR is either a KPP learning his craft, or part time forward and back up ruckman.
I have no problem with Roo taking the ruck contests in the forward line as BBB has done, and that may still happen.

I'm really surprised by those stats. I didn't think he'd played fwd that much. There not flattering performances.

My mistake. Petty played primarily in the backline following the ANZAC game last year.

Scott Thompson was homesick, and requested trade back to Crows. After we groomed and nurtured him through injury and about to make his mark. Played 49 games with MFC in 4yrs and then 269 games with the Crows. It will be interesting to watch Petty's body language for the rest of the year. Will we see another Luke Jackson and not go at the contest fearing injury like he played in 2022. Petty will do the same and not want to jeopardise his prospects for a trade.

I was dubious about Petty's desire to return to SA until I read an interview with his sister Hannah who is captain of the Adelaide Thunderbirds.  Hannah mentioned that the family was very tight.

She said that Harrison was keen to return to SA. I do think the MFC will trade him at the end of this season whilst there a chance of getting something of value.

IMO the best chance of him staying is if we make it to the GF (and Crows finish down the ladder).

You can trade picks all the way up to and on draft night though? 6,11,12,15 and a future first, there’s no doubt we could’ve made some big plays with that, had a month to prepare it, probably would’ve made the eagles have a good hard think about trading pick 1

I’ll say it again, there’s no way known we were going to get picks 11 and 15 for Petty. He’s played 5 and a bit years, averaging 12 games per year and 8.5 disposals per game.

On the last day of trade Adelaide offered two first rounders, 11 and 15

Not sure where you got that info from.
Adelaide did have picks 11 and 15 at one stage but traded them (and a future 2nd round) to GWS for picks 8 and 17.

The only report I saw that mentioned picks was from SA reporter Theo Doropoulos who said pick 14 and McAdam had been offered by the Crows.

IMO Petty will leave at the end of this year and we'll be lucky to get a late first round pick.

Petty's never going to be a KPP - forward or back.

    apparently he trained today?

I’m not sure. Nathan told yesterday. Maybe a ‘farewell’ session. Craig Kelly phoned Nathan immediately and offered him a position at the club. Nathan also in line for a large payout (from the Players’ fund?).

I assume Gus also in line for a similar payment, albeit small consolation.

  16. Further to my post re Nathan Murphy’s forced retirement, Shaun told me in January that Nathan’s contract had been extended by three years.
It means we may have the Pies in our corner when it comes to negotiating with the AFL re ‘compensation’ as regards the salary cap.
