id also like to state that even though it is not officially called tanking, it still is, there is no doubt about it, and carlton did it worse than any other club has before....

i agree with all of the other people on this thread that if melbourne were to lose the carlton game purposely (by playing people that werent ready to play and giving people operations that didnt need operations), if we won a premiership in 5, or 7 years time, i would be tainted IMO

just if carlton won a premiership in the next 3 or 4 years, i would not have respect for their amazing coaching and extremely hard work because IMO, they cheated to get there

I never said it would have immediate benifits, i said it was no comfort when our side was copping 100pt losses every week. If we had a chance at a first round priority at the end of the year - ie chance to draft the next Riewolt/Kosi or Franklin/Roughhead combo, that would be a SMALL comfort.

So i can agree to disagree, but if you truley after watching Melbourne win a premiership on grand final day when that siren sounded when everyone else is going absoloutely nuts because in most of our cases after decades of dissapointment and heartache we were witnessing our team win its first premiership, you wouldn't be? because you were wondering if it was 'tainted' or not.. surely thats a joke.

Losing the match would have been a bigger positive than winning it was.

However nobody was going to lose to Carlton that day. To send off one of our best servants in Nathan Brown (and Biz) by losing on purpose to the tanking cheats from Carlton, is a pathetic thing to do.

I'm sure we weren't trying overly hard to win the match, and all injured parties were rested. However, at the end of the day players were still going for the ball and doing their best to kick straight in front of goal. If their instincts told them otherwise we would be in a shitload of trouble. I don't want players at Melbourne who are not instinctively hungry and desperate to win.

For Carlton losing comes naturally. Thank god we haven't reached that stage yet.

Carlton would have gotten Judd either way. They only had to give up no. 3 for him, and both scenarios have them with pick 3. I have no doubt they would have sent 3 to WC even if it was their earliest pick.

Trouble is, it wasn't the Carlton game, it was the Bulldogs game that killed us. Carlton were never going to win that Rd 22 game, there was too big a prize at stake. Mark Riley played strong sides (well, as strong as possible) for most of the remainder of the season. Had we played only young, inexperienced players, the Dogs may have beaten us, leaving us with four wins. This is not cheating - it's called list management. There's no rule against playing particular players in your squad.

4 wins would've meant an extra pick in the high teens which could've landed another decent player.

And judging by our form so far this season, we might be heading for priority pick territory.

The simple fact is we need more talent on this list. Talent is more likely to come early in the draft. So saying that winning that Carlton game was more important than high draft picks is just ridiculous.

If we tried to lose that game Carlton would have just rolled over even more. Carlton dont have any pride or credibility to uphold they have always been dodgy, Drug dealers hanging around the club preying on young and upcoming footballers, and shady business men which are crooks running it .
