Poor first half of season has cost MFC off field

Article in HUN today saying Paul G spoke yesterday about the financial impact of poor games and injuries early in 2007.

This situation is more real than excuse used over last few weeks that played 3 interstate games ( e.g Freo) which traditionally get low attendances. many MFC members missing in reserved seats etc for several weeks now.

Reality is that attendances were below expectations.

Impossible to recover with only one more home game at the G this year - and that being round 22!.

Looks like the plan was to load the front end for MFC with games at the G to get maximum pressure on more members to sign up by 30 June. Nice deal and incentive if team goes well but in 2007 looks like back firing as even if the team goes gangbusters in 2nd half of this year & wins 7 plus of remaining games will not have big positive impct financially for MFC.

A strong finish will probably help m/ship for '08.

and the home game at the gabba will be low crowd as lions fans retreat when the teams losing

Does the crowd matter to us in terms of financials? I thought we got a flat rate. Do we get more on top of this?

The high injury toll meant the club also had to spend an extra $200,000 fielding players whose salaries were based on how many matches they played, rather than those on all-inclusive contracts.

"This essentially means that a player earning most of their money only when playing for the seniors has been required to cover for another player who is paid regardless of where or whether he plays," Gardner said.

Interesting.

I was under the impression we were going to profit this year, as they budgeted for low crowds for the Freo and Port games, and apparently we budgeted for 56,000 on the QB and got 70,000+. Am I wrong here?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
