Is the Importance of Key Forwards Overrated?

Does the Football world still overrate key forwards and their impact on winning?

Richmond 2017 Leading Goal Kickers (inclusive of finals):

Riewoldt: 2.3 goals/game
Martin: 1.48 goals/game
Butler: 1.3 goals/game
Castanga: 1.04 goals/game
Rioli: 1 goal/game

Western Bulldogs 2016 Leading Goal Kickers (inclusive of finals):

Stringer: 1.82 goals/game
Dickson: 1.81 goals/game
Bont: 1 goal/game
Redpath: 2 goals/game* (*10 games)
Smith: 1.38 goals/game

Melbourne 2021 Leading Goal Kickers (as of 7/8/21)

Fritsch: 2.16 goals/game
Pickett: 1.57 goals/game
McDonald: 1.57 goals/game
Petracca: 1.1 goals/game
Jackson*: 0.72 goals/game
Brown*: 1.71 goals/game

*I've listed both Jackson and Brown instead of capping it to 5, given Brown's lack of games played. Obviously he'd be well above Jackson having played equal games.

If it were possible for players to always hit up a lead, a key forward wouldn't really be necessary at all. But they are needed at the very least for insurance and a good key forward is invaluable IMO.

One of my favourite parts of the game is watching a big forward take a pack splitting grab.

Even on a bad day, a good KPF will at least bring the ball to ground and bring the smalls into it.

If KPF’s are overrated, doesn’t it by extension then mean that the importance of KPD’s is also overrated? One only needs to look at how important May, Lever, Petty and even Tomlinson have been for us this year.

Good KPF’s kick the goals and good KPD’s prevent goals, both vital in winning games of football.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Geelong

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
