Jones should relinquish captaincy now - Tex did.

Our club has the worst leadership of any club in the AFL. even the Suns with Witts, Swallow, Miller etc have better on field leadership.

we need to invest in someone like a Nick Maxwell figure to come into the club and develop leadership from our whole list.

it doesn't matter who is captain and who isn't, the underlying problem is our lack of leadership across the board, it's why we are so inconsistent, slow to react to opposition plays and consistently lose in the worst ways possible.

my personal opinion is we should recruit 2 on field leaders from other clubs, must be proven leaders, invest in a specific leadership coach/mentor and finally instill some ruthless, professional AFL standards at the club that we haven't had for a very long time, if at all.

Not sure of the Maxwell type option as your own last suggestion also indicates.

However that last option does have real merit.

Any imports must be introduced with genuine and transparent directions to themselves and teamates. They must be able to absorb and enhance existing leadership personalities.

Exactly. on field leadership in my opinion is our biggest concern in terms of list changes heading into 2020. not sure of who would be suitable targets to fill that role but it's definitely something we need to address.

Tex quitting is a lesson in understanding leadership qualities. There is no analogy with our captain.

When he was firing and Bruuuuce couldn't wait to exclaim "Tex' he was seen as the ultimate leader able to "kick a captain's goal".

When he struggled to get a kick, let alone a goal, he was seen as a impediment to success.

What this episode says is that leadership is not dependent on personal performance but on personal qualities.

Do not compare Nathan Jones to Tex. Jones has always shown the personal qualities of a leader but seemingly has struggled with the need to offer direction as well as leadership on field.  His efforts against all odds in his career have been exemplary. He needs help and it is up to the coaching panel to find it.
