For a team that prizes the contest we we woeful at the aerial contest in 2017, particularly with Max out injured or out of form.ย  Any kick down the line was a mark against us.

We made some big improvements in that area in 2018 andย I think we can make further improvements in 2019.

ย

I'm not sure of the logic behind Preuss coming in to enable Max to spend more time up forward.ย

Max is the best ruck in the league. Why would anyone want to change that? Whenย Preuss is in the side, I would expect him (Preuss) to be the one up forward to a) provide another tall target, b) provide ruck relief and, c) act as ruck in the forward half (or third) to reduce the amount of ground coverage required by Gawn. It's not like Max is a goal kicker* and I'd still expect him to spend time resting in the forward line.

*It remains to be seen whether Preuss is a better or worse in front of the big sticks.

ย

I reckon thereโ€™s a โ€œ conventional wisdomโ€ about full forwards that is misleading.

Everyone wants a tall full forward who ideally can rideย someoneโ€™s back and take screamers ย then kick goals.

How often does that happen??? Rarely.

Most goals from full forwards are from well-timed leads,a good pass, and a chest mark.( McKennaย ย and Dunstallย being classic examples.)

So I contend that the most important facet of a FF is speed on the lead, and the football nous of knowing when to lead.

Obviously there are times when thereโ€™s no time to pass, or space to lead, and a long kick comes into the pack in the goalsquare. If the FF isnโ€™t tall, and the tall ruckman isnโ€™t there, the kick should not be a high one to the pack, but a low scrubber that favours the pacy crumber.

Fullbacks are always tall, so the tendency is to put ย similar playersย on each otherJust imagine a tall fullback( letโ€™s use Fletcher as an example),with a tall Ff on him. A high kick comes in, and all he has to do is spoil, while the forward tries to mark. Youโ€™d back Fletcher to win. BUT, just imagine if , say, Garlett was somehow left โ€œ one out โ€œ with him, and a deliberate low bouncing kick came in. The smaller play would run rings around him( perhaps a Fletcher is a poor example, since he was so versatile, )

My point is that height shouldย not necessarily be a desirableย feature of a potential full forward.

ps....Iโ€™m very happy with TMac, though heโ€™s tall, he times his leads well.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturdayโ€™s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFLโ€™s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
