It sets up the expectations for the last year of his contract. I will say that.

Barring a Neeldesque meltdown, he needs to be allowed to finish his contract. If he isn’t the man to move us forward then we need to know who that man is before any attempt to move Goody on.

I would say that 2017 was more heartbreaking than 2016. It was clear that we had run out of puff in 2016. The Geelong game proved that without doubt. Plus we had to have other results fall our way to get in. We could have gutted wins out and still might have missed out.

We had our own fate in our hands in round 23. We had a full list (minus Jack Viney) to pick from and were playing depleted opposition. And we pizzed it down the drain with a woeful first quarter where we WEREN’T switched on.

I find some of the comments re Goodwin now and post season ignorant.

Even in Paul Roos recent interview in Inside Football he admits he was pretty much the match day coach in 2016 and had little to do with the players during the week.  In Roos' final year the game-plan was Goodwin's.  It's the year we really started to make inroads.  In Goodwin's first year as head coach he finished with the most number of wins this club has had since 2006.  And yet posters are claiming this is "on notice" ?

Spare me.

Btw, I'm not downplaying Roos' influence, as it's been massive and this club would be nowhere without him.  He was the right man do change the culture of this footy club.

Yep, completely agree.

Sacking Goodwin after 2 or 3 years would be Richmond of old and certainly not stable. Nor the right move for our football club.

There's no way we won't win 12+ games next year and without significant injuries, which always play a part, I think we'll comfortably win 14 games.

That sums it all up. A Senior Coach has got to do better when the list of players has shown talent.

Cannot agree with the Goodwin game plan if it demands players place themselves at unnecessary risk of injury, just to appease the coach. 

Playing hard is absolutely  necessary so long as it is also playing smart. I don't know if the players have adopted the right balance just yet. 

I think the jury is still out on Goodwin, but he will have or should have his full 2 years to prove he is smarter than the narrow minded "go in hard at any cost" epitomised by this year's on field performance and injury list.

I don’t like the term ‘on notice’.

To me that indicates you are one slip up away from getting sacked.

Unless the team goes backward at an unforeseen rate or he is involved in Wayne Carey in 2002 style shenanigans, there is no chance Goodwin is fighting for his life next year. 

If they miss the finals next year, then it moves the goal posts significantly for him being resigned come 2019. It will be finals or non renewal in that case. He gets us in in 2018 and he can probably get a further two on his existing deal.

However to think we are even close to ‘on notice’ at this point is ludicrous.
