Ticketing

Featured Replies

I guess this comes up for me when trying to get tickets for the upcoming Midnight Oil shows.

A big fail...pre sale seats not available within a minute of going on sale, general public tickets worse.

...and then Ticketmaster have resale tickets immediately available on their site for hugely inflated prices.

I smell a rat.

I'm going off info on Facebook but they tell me apart from GF day in Melbourne scalping isn't illegal.

I don't know what the Government gets from this but surely there is no reason for scalping to be made illegal and the dodgy practices of major ticket agencies legislated against.

Seems to be a big conflict of interest for the ticket people here who profess to be against scalping then set up systems to encourage it.

Shame it's not at the G Rjay. I live very close by and went to listen to guns n roses last week just outside in Yarra park. Ended up just walking straight in and seeing 3/4 of the concert. No ticket needed.

A few years back I missed out on  a Neil Finn show under the same scenario. After 10 minutes tickets were on sale on ticketmaster resell at 5 times face value. I sent a blister of an email to them - it is scalping - nothing more, nothing less. If they provided a service of reselling tickets people couldn't use at face value plus take a service fee I wouldn't have a problem but they are aiding and abetting scalping. I got no response.

I called the ACCC and they sympathised but said that scalping legislation is limited to sport events like the Grand Final.

It did have a happy ending. I was so angry I contacted Neil Finns management. They were unaware at that stage of ticketmaster resell. They were disgusted but said both agencies - ticketek and ticketmaster were hopeless. They found tickets to the show for me !!

One of the big problems now is that Ticketmaster & Ticketek are part of huge worldwide conglomerates that have quietly gone about taking over the entertainment business. These organisations run the bands, own or tie up venues & ticketing.

They have filled the void left since the demise/piracy of recorded music and diminishing power of the record company.

It's been a very smart strategy but as always the fan is the loser.

Good to hear Finn's management were proactive in sorting your problem.

It appears the Oils have backed down on some of their well held beliefs of the past. Apparently a section of available seats has been taken up by VIP's.

I remember back in the day the band refused to play Bombay Rock unless the VIP lounge was closed down for the night...They actually set the stage in the VIP area facing back to the regular stage.

...and of course they never went on Countdown.

Gone are the rebels lol, enter the corporation.

Does that surprise you? Peter Garrett's political radar is woeful. I am not a fan of left wing politics but when you are one of the greatest Australian musicians ever on the back of an agenda, if you foolishly enter politics at least stick up for the principals that gave you that platform.

I have no time for the Greens but would have much more respect for Garrett if he went down that path.

I didn't realise that the two major ticket selling outlets had a reselling business?

have re-read what you have both written and am shocked. I hate them already because they charge me an admin fee for printing my own tickets. Now I hate them more.

excuse the ignorance guys but who owns the resale tiks they are selling?

They would tell you it's unfortunate people who are now not able to attend the event, they are doing a service for them to not be hard done by and sell their tickets rather than have them go unused.

In truth it's often the scalpers...they are in effect creating a market place for scalpers.

So the poor people that can't make it and likely bought naximum tickets sell back for a higher price?

And ticket whatever there name is, on sell the ticket at an inflated price? Taking a commission or charging a fee on top of the original admin fee?

Ticketek don't have a resell arm only Ticketmaster.

It is a disgrace. I can't see what the commission is but wait for it  - if you sell a ticket  you don't get your money until 7 days after the event ! So if you buy tickets at inflated prices off resale, not only do they get a commission but they keep your money until 10 days after the event. So they have the money for the first time they were sold and the second time !! You will wait until November to get your money for midnight oil tickets you sold.

Ticketmaster resale is owned by Ticketmaster who I believe is owned by Live Nation.

Edit - FYI - I do not condone the scalping of tickets period. Ticketmaster are not scalpers - they are facilitators. Rjay - you got me so worked up that I lodged an official complaint with the ACCC
