Well, that's clearly untrue, because Tommy Mac is an attacking defender with horrible decision-making, who struggles to hit regular targets. I take it you're referring to Garland here. His problem is that he's not attacking enough. His instinct isn't to attack and when your offensive weapon is your ball transition from defence, a player like that isn't long for that game plan.

Didn't say he 'was' attacking enough. I'm saying he attacks (or attempts to at times) more often than Dunny. Agree that it probably isn't all that instinctive and he looks reluctant much of the time.

I am, in part, in agreement with you on Tmac. However, I differ in regard to his decision making (when to switch/run lines/pull trigger on 45s) being generally (but not always) better than Garlo's. Agreed Tmac lets himself down with poor excecution by foot roughly half the time (that's a guess based on observation as only the FD would have the true numbers of kicking efficiency over various distances). By not hitting targets at a high enough standard at AFL level, Tmac's decisions sometimes 'appear' horrid with the impact of resulting turnovers. He does take many more risks than Garlo here but they're generally good ones until it comes to the kicking part.

IMO Garlo has trouble with making good decisions AND disposal efficiency by foot...that's why the Coaches/FD prefer Tmac over Garlo (better decision making generally). I think the FD has more faith that if he can lift his kicking efficiency to somewhere around AFL average (approx 63%) and hit targets more often than present then they (we) are looking at a potential A grade attacking defender or very close to it.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
