Carltank

I am sick of listening to supporters from other Clubs complaining about Melbourne's "tanking". I can rememberin 2007 at the MCG last round playing Carlton. We were up by 31 points going into the last quarter. About 20 minutes into the last quarter and Carlton were making a run of it and suddenly Fev was off. He jogged off not injured but I couldn't believe it. How naive I was. It stopped Carltons run and we eventually won the game. Ah yes, Carlton ended up with 4 wins and a priority pick. Media dont just look at us, look back over the years and you will see that the AFL has turned a blind eye for years and years because it was convenient to do it. Can someone tweet one of the football stations and remind them about other Clubs instances of tanking. The last thing we want is for the AFL get pushed into an investigation into Melbourne and us perhaps losing picks or worse.

This just seems to be gaining more and more momentum now that certain "legal" entities are coming out asking for an investigation.

This tanking business is one of those truths that dares not speak its name. Every team in a position to gain advantage from it has done it. The AFL know all about it and turn a blind eye. Now the media are on or backs for it. Kick us harder whilst we are down they will. As the AFL is the be and end all of Football I doubt anything will happen. But knowing our dumb luck we could go down as the first club to be formally scrutinised or punished for this.

I was glad to see Greg Baums article this morning. He even mentioned the holier than thou Collingwood. Do we think that the AFL are going to punish a majority of the teams for tanking.

Thank goodness the media still has people like Greg Baum and Gerard Healy, who bring rationality to the world. The troubling aspect of things is that Adrian Anderson seems to always feel the need react on all the other journo's continued garbage and insinuations.

In regard to Carlton, Brett Ratten took over as caretaker coach, lost 7 out of 7 games and then won himself the job. Enough said. No disrespect to Ratten - I think he has a great footy brain and seems to have turned into a very good coach - but the point being that certain journalists this week have been on a crusade to get the Demons, yet conveniently forget all the teams that preceded us who received PP's.

Let's not forget that a) the rule used to give clubs a PP after only ONE season with less than 5 wins (the rule is now two seasons); and B) Melbourne lost out significantly by not 'tanking' (poor choice of word) against Carlton in Rd 22, 2007.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
