Sean Wight & the Irish radon connection

Featured Replies

I'm in Vienna just now so missed the Etihad debacle. But an Aussie mate who works for the IAEA and is an expert on radon exposures (as well as a Cats supporter) mentioned the maybe-coincidental connection between Sean's tragic and inexplicable lung cancer, and the incidence of extreme radon levels in some houses in a certain area of Co Kerry (where Sean lived from maybe age 10, and played his Irish footy).

We don't know at this stage where Sean lived as a boy in Co Kerry, but some houses in the Tralee/Castleisland area have the highest radon levels recorded in Europe (enormously high). It's reported that in one house, 3 people have died of lung cancer.

Sadly, Sean is gone and every sympathy to his family - such a brilliant and courageous athlete. But if there is a probable connection established with radon exposure as a boy living in a house in Co Kerry, maybe Sean's death will help raise awareness and save others in future. Incidentally, the lead-time for getting cancer from radon exposure can be 30 years.

The tribute video clip of Sean's courage (http://hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=150811) has one brilliant moment that is indelibly imprinted on my brain from the day I saw it happen, the moment where he outruns Gary Ablett and dives to punch the ball out of bounds was the epitome of Sean's big athletic heart!

Looking back, it's been a great privilege to have watched the courage and skill of no. 27 pounding his heart out for the greatest footy club on earth!

The game tonight was no way to honour a champion like Sean. I hope their feeling the pain as deeply as we are.

Look at Sean's tackle against Collingwood. That should be copybook for MFC tackle training...

Seems plausible. For someone so fit and healthy to get such an aggressive form of cancer, it just doesn't add up.

Been out of the lop all week, very sad to hear of Sean's passing. He must have been very sick once the media heard to go already...sad time for his family and the MFC.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
