Sean Wight Article

Anyone who missed this article last saturday, it is well worth a read.

I am not a big Mike Sheahan Fan but this one deserves some cred. I actually shed a couple of tears reading this one, so in case it passed you by....

Nice work Mike...You did good.

Agree. Although confronting and terribly sad, it was a well written piece. It's easy to forget just how good a player Sean Wight was. An amazing athlete with incredible courage - two factors that he will no doubt draw upon in this battle. I'm sure I speak for every MFC supporter when I say that we wish him the speediest of recoveries.

I'll always remember the courage he showed in the 1989 night grand final against Geelong at VFL Park when despite tearing his hamstring, managed to knock the ball on to our advantage, resulting in a goal. It was an heroic effort, just like the hundreds of spectacular spoils that he made, often against taller opposition. He is an absolute legend of our club and played with the spirit that I'd love our current-day players to show on a more regular basis.

Get well soon Sean. We're barracking for you.

E remember the 1988 elimination final when we were being flogged by WCE at VFL Park Waverley and Sean Wight went to full forward (from fullback) and almost singlehandedly brought us back into the game with powerful contested marking. He also did a great job against Dermot Brereton in the '87 prelim. even though we lost. He often played the fullback position like a soccer goaly, very inspirational.

Forget the haunting of Round 11 — we’ve got this. Melbourne returns to its inner-city fortress for its milestone 100th AFLW match, carrying a formidable 10–2 record at IKON Stadium. Brisbane’s record at the venue is more balanced: 4 wins, 4 losses and a draw.

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
