bonus points system for AFL games.

Hi all, I don't debunk percentage and it is still a required tool but it does nothing for making a game a better spectacle or contest and getting both sides to play out four quarters of quality football. And thats been the core issue of my whole argument. Interesting to read Prodical Son's comment on the Farrer league. The system made no difference to ladder position so perhaps its just as accurate as percentage to determine position but I'd bet it made a difference to how the games were played out quarter by quarter.

I don't remember it making a difference as a player and as a supporter it was quite confusing. Originaly there was a lot of enthusiasm for the system but it waned because it was regarded as an unneccesary complication. I have a feeling that they were trialing it on behalf of the VFL but don't quote me. I'm glad you brought it up because I haven't thought about it for years.

Imagine teams chipping it around at the end of each quarter to ensure they win the point on offer for that quarter. Would make the game more defensive if anything.

There is no need to complicate a simple and effective system. I would hate to explain this, on top of everything else, to somebody new to the game.

Why doesn't percentage means teams will keep fighting even if a game's over, etc? It's based on the same idea as bonus points for winning quarters, but doesn't discriminate based on when you score.

You mention fairness, but I'd like to point out that bonus points for winning quarters is less fair than percentage - why should winning a quarter by 10 points be worth the same as winning a quarter by 10 goals?

Percentage doesn't have this problem, and if you were to try and vary the amount of bonus points per quarter won based on margin your system would get pretty complex pretty quick.

Thanks rookie for the info. Good to see that this system was tried. Looks like it had some support at first but looks like not worth the effort. I still wonder how it will work for the modern game. Good discussion.

Cheers all.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
