150 Heroes Book - Where is Frank " Checker" Hughes?

Checker Hughes was coach of a very successful MFC team, that won 4 premierships. He also gave MFC the name "Demons" surely he is worthy of being in the 150 Heroes Book?

Not a player maybe?

Legend of a coach though, and in terms of most inlfuential people in the MFC's History I would say he would be in the top 3 or 4.

True, this is why he missed out.

Had to play for Melbourne.

This is also why guys like Sam Allica and Jim Carwell didn't make the hero's list.

the criteria on the 150 Heros was that they played 100 games for Melbourne (With the exception of a few), Best & Fairests, Brownlow Medallists, State Representatives, Premiership players and overall Contribution to the club.

But the underlying criteria is that they had to have played for Melbourne.

Frank 'Checker Hughes played for Richmond and coached both the Tigers and Melbourne. He has received high recognition for his efforts. He was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996 and was inducted into the MFC Hall of Fame in 2001. Yes, the club has honoured his great achievements.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
