the umpires?

Featured Replies

Did anyone else notice how poor the umpires were in the StK/Geel game today? ....

The 50 metre penalty given to Ablett in the 1st quarter was exactly what umpires were paying at the start of the year. Ablett marked and his oponent grabbed him and held him up for 2 seconds max. Problem is that they are not paying that any more. Can't remember the details but in our game on Saturday one of our players marked and his oponent tackled him and then sat on him. No 50 metres.

Too true Demon Tragic.

The amount of communication between players and umpires has to stop. They are not there to commentate, they are there to adjudicate. Calling players by nicknames, telling players to "get the ball out" and instructing players to "settle down" are unacceptable in my opinion.

The other one that gets to me is the explanation of a free (i.e. no it's not a free kick because he didn't drag it in etc.). All that needs to be said "it's a free kick" - and even that is said by blowing the whistle. If a player argues, it gets reversed/50. Simple.

Can't remember who it was against, but the WC forward clearly put his hands in the back of his Demon defender opponent, was paid the mark and a goal was scored. I thought the hands in the back in a marking contest was an absolute no, no these days.

As an old fart, I can remember when the umps at least had a "feel" for the game. This present day crop are prima donnas, who think they are media stars.

Colin Sylvia offered 3 weeks. Bloody disgraceful. If he were a filth player he would not even had been cited.

On a good note, A Davey's report has been thrown out and so it should be.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
