"staying competitive for longer"

You are absolutely correct - "We played well but came second" - what a load of bs

well now it's got bloody well worse! I see Brad Green's taken to saying that we aim to be competitive--no thought of actually winning it seems!

I've noted what all you miserable types say--'that's all we can aim for-" I say -b-s!

We'll have a [very] decent backline I believe. McDonald, Mclean,Bruce Green and umpteen others on the ball, Morton and Wheatley? on the wings, Miller at CHF,accompanied by Davey, Wona, Bate, even the blessed Sylvia who's usually good for a goal from his 3 disposals, I have faith in Newton.and expect Dunn to burst forth as a top player. And we'll get a bit from a number of recruits

Bit worried about rucks, less so if Spencer can play.

Hell, it doesn't look too bad, and we should be aiming to snag victories [a lot of them] rather than running a good second [out of 2]

i can't think of one way how it is a negative comment, or bad line.

How many matches are one when a team is not competitive? If you've followed the dees for any length of time, which obviously you have, you'd know competitiveness has long been one of our biggest problems - 06 losses to the Blues for instance.

It is the process that gets teams to premierships! If players are competitive 100 percent of the time and follow a good style of play, they become very hard to beat.

I still haven't gotten over them mate, and they've pretty much come to symbolize for me a lot of what has been wrong with the club since I've been supporting them.

I feel an attitude that one must be forever "competitive" or hard at it no matter who is in the side or who you are playing, will go a long way to fixing these problems.

Hell, it doesn't look too bad, and we should be aiming to snag victories [a lot of them] rather than running a good second [out of 2]

Bailey meant that 'coming second' remark as a way of not allowing the team to be happy with honourable losses. As in - we came second, we lost, it doesn't matter if we were the better team for 75% of the game, etc.

I think you need to re-read his remarks before your next rant.

it's not a rant, and no need for you to be offensive. What about Brad Green's remarks in The Age?

Coaches who hope to win don't, in my [lengthy] experience, talk about being competitive

I've also had some experience in marketing and I can promise you that a promise to be competitive won't help sell memberships--if one needs to adopt that approach into the season, then ok--but not before.

At the bottom of my concern is my belief that unless MFC kicks a lot of goals, financially, this` year could be our last in Melbourne. At present the budget is a country mile from balancing

With the list we have, if we focused solely on "winning," we would end up in the same position as Sheedy's Bombers a couple of years ago.

Competitive in a couple of matches, by largely smashed. Sheedy wanted them playing free flowing, attacking footy.

For Melbourne, another season of poor, uncompetitive losses containing a handful of devastating losses would not sell memberships either, and would certainly not help us to "kick goals financially."

Our entire club needs to learn how to stay commited to the task, at all times. This will help our young players mature as a group, and help our team match it with other teams who might be better skilled/manned than ours.

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
