Buckley's Chance to Step Up

Buckley's chance to step up

The first time I saw Buckley play in a NAB cup game a couple of years ago, I had a feeling he'd be a really good player for the club. Still needs to add a bit of polish to his game, but has the tools to become more than just a good player. His development reminds me a bit of Scott Thompson's. I am not suggesting that they are in any way similar players. What I am trying to say is that the rate at which Buckley is developing seems to parallel that of Thompson, who always looked like he would be a beauty, added a couple more strings to his bow each year, and then finally reached star status (after we were forced to trade him). I desperately hope that Buckley continues to improve at this rate, AND sticks with us, unlike Scott, who was a real favourite of mine until he left.

i can't say much about him compared to Scott Thompson (As I really can't remember too much about Thompson before he left), but I know what I like about Buckley. The fact that he does have a capability to back himself in.

I the games I watched him play he was never afraid to go through a pack or break a tackle. Sure his disposal left us with headaches at times, but his endeavor never wavered.

I'm sure that he'll have every chance to go the next level this season. It would be great to see.

Gippy

I became a big fan of buckley very early last year. I think along with grimes they are the real 2 to watch from last years group (Apologies to CM).

I can remember chatting to my brother at half time early last year in a game where he would have finished with close to 30 touches in a game we got smashed.

I was being a little critical of his disposal, especially by hand. To which my brother said he's not missing his targets, the boys around him aren't where they are supposed to be. From this point I took a real close interest in buckley in the way he moved at stoppages, work over the ball etc and have to say what I started to see immediately impressed me. Far to often over the last couple of years I have seen our midfield flat footed at the stoppages. This puts the players 1m behind where they should be on a clearence win. the other thing I noticed was generally when buckley missed his target the handball was in front of the player generally by about a meter. So as the players get to know each other these handpasses are more likely to hit targets under pressure releasing quick football into the forward line. Also he has a judd like ability to take the opporsition players on and beat them and he will learn when to and not to do this. So Buckley within this season could well become our #2 or even #1 midfielder.

He is a ball magnet as well, plus looks like physically he is developing as well.

A good player to fill a hole in a super coach midfield as well (his price should not be too high).

Whole heartedly agree.

Have loved Buckley always. His disposal will improve as everyone's should this season.

Is it just me or does anyone else agree that he moves a bit like Juddy?

I see a bit of him in Buckley. Very excited about his future.

Carn those dee's !

92kg! hes a tank! Official Website has him listed as 87 from last year.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
