Crikey - AFL expansion onto the Gold Coast a momentous folly

But you have to be a subscriber to Crikey to be able to read the story, otherwise you only get the first line!

Here's the gist of the article (from what I can recall reading on here a second ago):

- Brisbane failed on the Gold Coast, and people didn't turn up to the match there this year

- Brisbane, on the back of 3 flags, only have 22,000 members (lowest in the AFL)

- The AFL will have to fork out serious $ to play games in QLD away from Brisbane until 2015 (?)

- Broadcasting revenue won't necessarily increase with more matches p/wk (3x more people watched rugby when Coll v Bris was live)

- The AFL's national expansion was prompted by Carlton's Elliot - who was apparently planning a breakaway national league in the late 80s - and Elders went bankrupt

But you have to be a subscriber to Crikey to be able to read the story, otherwise you only get the first line!

...and that means that Crikey isn't puttng the article out there for everyone to read. We might not like that, but someone's putting their resources into publishing the article.

It's bad form to copy and paste whole articles onto other sites anyway, especially considering many sites are sustained - at least in part - by advertising revenue

NB: It seems that if you're keen, you can register for a free 'trial'.

That's like saying you'll download a movie/computer game off the internet because otherwise you have to pay for it.

You say that like it's illegal or something....

Well I have been a subscriber to Crikey in the past so i do know the gist of why I couldnt read it, but figured the author could at least summarise if we cant read it rather than sending us to a dead link. I stopped Crikey as it was just too expensive and I dont have enough time in the day to read it..

He can summarise it if he wants, but that's not what he did, he pasted in the entire contents of the article. I subsequently edited his post and added the link. I didn't actually know until you pointed it out that it required a subscription (I just grabbed the link without opening it), so sorry about that. Rogue's done a good job of summarising it anyway.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
