except for the poos and wees scumbags who were jeering us all the way out of the ground.  That is where my hatred for their fans started

Wow, that's pretty bad. I've heard a couple of stories like that from that game. I was only two at the time so wasn't there and can't remember it.

Oh yeah, supported the Ds for only 11 years by 1976.  Was away for the R22 , Collingwood Melbourne/Carlton Footscray match.  We hadn't won at Vic Park since 1968 either.

Nearly quarter of a century by 87 and I was OS.

Only omen I have now is I am away again

Kinda hopin Tom Scully bobs up, kicks the one putting North out.

By my calculations u began supporting the Dees in 1965.

    Not great timing.

  3. Just had a quick look at the 87 season. If we do it this time it will be a much tougher run with Hawthorn, Port away and Geelong away. In 87 our last 5 included the bottom three teams (Richmond, Collingwood and Brisbane) and West Coast who were around the middle and of course the doggies who were 5th when we played them I believe.

I'm looking forward to the drive down. A sea of red and blue scarfs out the windows, the maurading demons descending upon the hapless hamlet of the cats. The victorious return home, like Hagar the Horrible with the spoils, shall be sweet.

    Will be a fantastic day.

Fascinating that the Saints game is on the same time as ours.

Not quite an '87 moment but eerily similar

Nah, the big one be will north vs gws that night, assuming everything has gone to plan!

Martin Flanagan is a friend of a friend. i sat with him at the first Saints match this year. He's a ripping bloke and a great writer.

    He really likes the Demons.

Would love to sit down and have a couple of pots with this guy. Seems like a great bloke to have a yarn with.

The team Roos took over wasn't much better than the 1 win 49% Fitzroy team of 1996. The Dees in 2013 were 2 wins and 54% (including a win over a fledgling GWS).

Roos took on a 2013 Melbourne team coming off 11 defeats of over 10 goals, including 6 losses of over 90 points. Half of their season games were 10 goal plus hidings and over a quarter were 90 plus.  Two of the losses were 148 points and 128 points.

To put that into perspective, this year Essendon and Brisbane (presently) have had just 2 losses of over 90 points. Roos took over a worse list than the 2016 version of both Essendon and Brisbane.  Brisbane are considered an utter rabble with 2 wins and 60%, but at the corresponding period we'd kicked 221 points less in 2013.

That he's been able to strip back the list and have the least experienced side in the competition last weekend (66 games to Brisbane's 67) beat the all conquering premiers, who'd delivered another 105 point thumping last year is testament to the incredible improvement and transformation of the list and club.  He knew he'd first have to teach the players how to compete at AFL level, then win and finally win consistently.  He took over a team that had won 20 quarters for the year and this year they'll be more than double.  We're currently within 2 quarters of the Dogs and 5 of Hawthorn.  We've won 5 more than St.Kilda.

Peter Jackson has been a Godsend too, but it's the coach who sets the tone of a football club. He's brought in Goodwin and allowed him to have control in the areas he's good at, such as player relationships and game style. Roos has created an environment where Goodwin and others can thrive.  He's been a culture changer.

And he's been worth every cent.

    Great post.

    something is up at Freo.

There was a few rumours floating around Perth earlier in the year about players being unhappy about favouritism. It seems like something has definitely changed the culture of the club. Fyfe and Sandilands are good, but they aren't that good that the rest of the team becomes completely incompetent.

Not surprising given Ross Lyon is an utter [censored].

I can't remember what this thread was about but the nickname part is funny. I have heard the players yelling out "Killer" to Watts at training, and I still think "Nibbler" is great for Neal-Bullen. What is odd though, is that they all seem to call Dawsey "Chris". Doesn't seem to have a nickname or just prefers Chris. Strange, I can think of a few for him.

I've had mates in the past that have gone through so many nicknames that eventually it goes full circle and you go back to calling them their first name because it sounds so strange to call them that.

I really think Jack doesn't get talked up as much as he deserved, i personally think he's every bit as good as the Bont, Cripps or any young mid in the comp,

Was on AA pace until he got injured. He's now an elite midfielder of the comp. One of the club's heart and soul players. I reckon one day he'll lift the premiership cup for Melbourne.
