  1. Had some great times under Bails and we certainly had a lot of hope around that time. Was unlucky with how it all panned out. From a distance he seemed like a great bloke too. Most of all, a real tragedy for someone that age to die - particularly someone with a family.

Great stuff guys i was in the cheersquad in the 70's as well, remember most of those guys now that names have been mentioned they were great days even if we didn't win that much.

Some of my memories are meeting early in the mornings of gameday at the G to hang up the banners, having a little fire at the back of the old southern stand to keep warm some mornings, used to take home a banner sometimes to open it up during the week to help air it out and dry used to roll it out along the footpath always loved the MELBOURNE - MASTERS OF THE MCG .

The cheersquad used to sit on the wing in the old southern stand , remember we played either Collingwood or Essendon cheersquad a couple of times and we won :) also the 1976 game at vic park, was so upset at missing the finals that year and a big fight in the field in front of the players race after the game the collingwood supporters were going off, Steve actually walked with me across the ground so nothing would happen to me, think i was about 14, good man ( still think Carlton lied down that day so we didn't make it !!! ) but also ripping up phone books during the reserves game to throw whenever we kicked a goal, the old duffle coat with Robbie"s name on the back and the old material cheersquad badges that mum had to sow on .

I still have it, my son wore it to the merger match when i thought i would not have a team anymore , lots more i remember thanks for starting this thread so long ago but have brought back great times even if we didn't win that often and why i love this club so much :) .

    cheers guys

    Great post.

    How long till footy season!?!

  3. One of the problems is that clubs have to pay almost 100% of the salary cap. This means that Brisbane are paying their players the same as the Doggies. If effectively means they are being forced to being paid above market rates given their players aren't very good. If this was abolished, clubs that were poor onfield would be able to throw more money at good players. At the moment the only motivating factor for players moving is to play in a flag. Fair enough. If the salary cap thing was abolished, a financial incentive would exist for good players to go to poor clubs. Then there'd at least be a bit of movement both ways.

  4. There's always teams that go backwards unexpectedly and teams that improve out of nowhere. Hard to say who specifically we'll beat. I don't have a very entertaining answer - I just think we'll win two or three more games than last year and play a final or two.

A classic "serviceable" player .  Shouldn't we be looking to recruit possibly  the next Boyd or Patton ?

I'm sure the recruiting dept are capable of doing more than one thing at once.

You have an internal comp. The goal kicking ladder. Every week, every player takes X shots on goal. Highest score wins. Lowest score suffers a penalty, to be decided by rest of team. Shout the others a meal, or some such.

You can do it in groups too. Groups of 4. Highest/lowest within the group, same deal. Groups can challenge other groups to see which is king of the mountain. Winners get a prize, losers a penalty.

Put something on the line, that means something to the players, but also helps with the cameraderie.

Footy clubs should ask pro golfers for ideas on how to practise goal kicking. Eg you take 10 shots from various set angles/distances. You can't leave training until you have dobbed all 10 in a row. If you miss one, you start again.

It's pretty funny that people think footy clubs don't already do stuff like this.

  7. Bit heartbroken that Jack has been delisted. A Melbourne supporter his whole life, an ex club captain and a fantastic and selfless bloke - I want them all to do well, but I especially wanted Jack to do well. I remember when he first started how good he was and seemed like he'd already played 150 games. Certainly got held back by injuries, shambolic player development from the club and the fact that the game demands so much more from defenders now that it did when he started.

Unfortunately life's not fair sometimes but hopefully Jack realises he has a special place in a lot of Melbourne supporters' hearts.

Unlike some of you guys, I reckon the list managers would use more than 30 minutes of bad football to make their decisions going forward. These same guys are the ones who got Casey to a GF in the first place. Admittedly this kind of fade out is all too familiar.

There's 30 minutes of bad football and there's a lack of effort in a Grand Final. Astonishing really.
