  2. "I always remember a face but in your case I'll make an exception!" Groucho Marx
  3. I always felt John Beckwith still had lots left in him and left when close to his best. http://demonwiki.org/John+Beckwith
  4. Gary Hardeman Greg Wells Stan Alves Ross Dillon Ray Nilsson Adrian Bowden Greg Parke Hassa Mann Ron Barassi Don Williams (came back) Stuart Spencer Gerard Healy
  5. 1. Ron Barassi 2. John Townsend 3. Hassa Mann 4. Stan Alves 5. Ross Dillon 6. Tassie Johnson 7. Brian Dixon 8. Don Williams 9. John Lord 10. John Beckwith Ian Ridley and Bluey Adams..oops..thats more than 10!
  6. Was having a trip down memory lane last night and looked up Bluey just to refresh myself about when he retired and maybe why. One of my favourite players back then on a wing or roving /forward pocket changing with Ian Ridley. http://www.demonwiki.org/Frank+Adams
  7. Have been mulling over the same thoughts myself the last few days WJ. As well as possibly making a difference in 1962-3, imagine the difference Big Bob Johnson could have made in those really lean years of 1965-68. I recall we were so "light on" in the big man department I recall in one game (if not more) that Tassie Johnson had to do the rucking against the taller top ruckmen from other clubs. We seemed to lose so many whilst in their prime..even in the good times.. Peter Marquis, Athol Webb? Though maybe they were at the end of their careers..just seems to me they were all playing well when they moved on..Other handy players like Alan Rowarth (injury), Doc Roet, and later David Hone and many more. And losing all 3 of Barassi, Alves and Wells was a tragedy. Yes Bush Demon..Doc Roet left for overseas after 5 games in 1965 according to Demonwiki. Came back in 1968 for a further 5 games. Sadly missed at that time. http://www.demonwiki.org/Brian+Roet
  8. Hi Chippy. I think Denis had 3 numbers..in this order 38 2 and then 17. http://demonwiki.org/Denis+Clark You were right too Prof..thanks for the correction..despite my thoughts that he had played at some stage in the back pocket, I couldn't find that happening at all in the old Footy Records I researched last night..wing, centre and forward pocket/rover at various times..depending on the structure of the side at the time. The Footy Record link provided elsewhere on this site was very helpful. Cheers
  9. Interesting that Terry Leahy came up in the thread as I was reading about him last night. I think he was thrown around in a variety of tough roles in an undermanned team at the time. Apparently he and Graeme Jacobs (another handy player) left the club and went to South Melbourne at the same time after being disciplined over an end of season incident..see Demonwiki
  10. Good call on the missing Laurie Mithen bobby mcKenzie....well spotted! and thanks for the complete list DavidNeitz9!
  11. http://demonwiki.org/Number+28 Some interesting 28's too..fond memories of Terry Gleeson in the ruck in the good years when I was a kid...and Derek Feldmann in the not so good years in the back pocket in the mid/late 60's? And the Number 11's. http://demonwiki.org/Number+11
  12. I do remember Denis Clark in his early years had number 38( I think) before it changed.Think he played either as a forward pocket/rover and wing before making the back pocket his own..does this square with others memories? I remember Kelvin Clarke impressing in his first game(s) with a couple of smart goals before a bad knee injury. We both must go back a fair way! Some good memories of back then!
  13. Thanks for providing that memory DavidNeitz9 . Recently I have spent a bit of time researching results trying to find which game that was and was tearing my hair out trying to find it..I think I got off on the wrong foot thinking it was the final match of the season and that's why I couldn't find it.. Yes I remember that well. From memory, Hassa was awarded a very questionable mark by an umpire who was unsighted behind him..and I think the ball may actually have touched the ground as he was diving and grabbed it? Think he was on the HFFlank Punt Road end, Members side(Western Stand). Is that how you remember it too Bush Demon and DavidNeitz9? Shows you how remarkable the ladder was that year when as you say one kick meant the difference between fifth and a Flag for us and Hawthorn finishing 5th instead of first. I still have happy childhood memories of later that year (or close to?) of spotting Hassa standing outside the chemist shop in Sorrento eating an ice cream! Made my day! In those days it was unusual for a kid like me to ever see a MFC football hero in "real life" as opposed to on the turf on game day or on Saturday night replay with Butch Gale and Mike Williamson before Pelaco Inquest!
  14. Great to see positive posts like this on Demonland Shirtfront and Dee-luded.. We sometimes post thoughts and observations which can change when we consider others ideas as well. Good to see two mature posts without all the personal jibes and sad name calling that occurs on Demonland sometimes when people have different views. You have set a good standard Shirtfront and Dee-luded.Thanks.
