Spurs top of the table! Best start since 1960 apparently It's already looking like a race in 4 unless Man Utd & Chelsea can get on a roll Arsenal vs Man City tonight might tell a story if either team wins but Liverpool can't afford to drop points at Brighton. Villa can make things interesting if they can keep winning (at Wolves tonight) Hammers vs Newcastle rounds things out tonight as well

Anyone for cricket?
And just like that we lose a wicket ... always the way on this thread, d4!! They've got 3 world class spinners in their team on a wicket that is taking spin. 230 - 270 tops but can we defend that sort of total? Edit: we're in allsortsa! (currently 5-120 off 30 overs)

There are some good match-ups this week including Eagles @ Rams, Jags @ Bills (London) & KC @ Vikings but SNF is a beauty ... Dallas @ San Francisco The winner can gain an advantage with regards to playoff position so a lot riding on the result Packers @ Vegas (MNF) could be an interesting game and the early Sunday game between old rivals (Ravens @ Steelers) could get willing as well NFL Week 5 Preview

2023 Best and Fairest
Well said Steven May! A straight shooter who walks the walk. Pressure is a good thing if harnessed the right way. Goodwin, Gawn & co would have loved what May had to say I hope we play them twice in the H & A next season. The rivalry is back and they're the villain. Bring it on!

The GCS Pick 4 Thread
Gut feeling is that we get hold of pick 4 and then try and trade up with 4 & 5 And then draft 2 topline midfielders with excellent disposal skills ... let the 2 draftees learn from the best (Petracca, Oliver, Viney & Brayshaw) We need to look to the future and we may not get another chance at the top end of the draft for quite some time Petracca can play forward, and Brayshaw can play shallow back (defensive midfielder) Viney & Oliver being the 2 main extractors Forward flankers can be attacking midfielders (Petracca & ?) whilst back flankers can be defensive midfielders with an attacking mindset (Salem, Rivers - maybe Sparrow) Our 2 wingmen will likely stay as they are but Brayshaw could fill the role as a wingman with aplomb as he has done previously With Brown & T-Mac likely to play on along with Petty, JVR & Smith fit and raring to go, our existing forward stocks can work. And Jefferson could be decent too (down the track) Not forgetting Fritsch, Petracca & Kozzie as forwards. We just need our forwards to remain on the field So we need to cash in if we end up with 2 picks at the top end of the draft So for those who are all over the potential top 8 draftees (i.e. midfielders), what's the standard like?

Our resident Man Utd fan @roy11 might be able to enlighten us on their troubles It seems to me that they get a heap of possesssion but have issues in the front 3rd

Wolves winning gives the City rivals some real hope. Maybe the Sky Blues are starting to miss De Bruyne (occasionally) with his immense influence (as well as his brilliant partnership with Haaland) Those 2 are the best one-two punch in world soccer Man City are up against Leipzig, Arsenal, Brighton & Man Utd in the next month so they'll be tested (or not!)

Jones' foot passes over the ball and made aggressive contact to the leg of his opponent ... red card appropriate. At best it was poorly disguised. That sort of tackle can cause a lot of damage especially with studs up The Dias goal should have been allowed and not getting the graphics was a bit suspect (as it turns out, VAR didn't even intervene) Jota was extremely unlucky with the first yellow ... incidental contact to my eyes but when you're on a yellow card, you can't afford to tempt fate with a clumsy tackle But the Dias non goal was an absolute howler (the PGMOL have acknowledged that the goal should have stood ... initiating a full review - all too late) Klopp was exasperated about the non goal but didn't have much to say about the 2 players being sent off The own goal at the end was the cherry on top! A riotous affair!

TMac & Brown
Yet if Petty, JVR & Melksham were all available, we'd have been good to go We win at least 1 final with those 3 fit and firing ... adding Fritsch, Kozzie & Petracca of course. Gawn drifting forward occasionally to mix things up T-Mac probably wouldn't have been in the side and the only real issue would be fitting all 3 of the aforementioned into the team I don't generally like making excuses as we could have won either final anyway if we had our kicking boots on but structurally, we were cruelled by injuries to our forwards In fact, we did remarkably well with a makeshift forward line. Ordinarily, a top 4 team rarely, if ever, has a makeshift forward line

A Day at the Races
Imperatriz sets another track record in winning the Moir Stakes! Staying in Melbourne too bypassing the Everest. Next up the Manikato Stakes then the sprint on Champions day at Flemington What a star! Just cruised up and whoosho! Earlier, Amelia's Jewel won the Stocks Stakes in fine style ... so it's the Golden Eagle or the Cox Plate on the horizon (close enough to favourite in either race)

Yze replacement
Don't know but Robert Harvey might have set the record for interviews In terms of walking into the cushiest coaching job, Chris Scott would have to be in front of the rest Craig McRae inherited a good list too. And Roos set things up in a reasonably good way for Goodwin Going right back, Big Nick taking over from Barassi?

2023 GRAND FINAL
I've structured my work arrangements so that I'm working for the entire match Hoping that the Lions win but can't bear to watch Collingwood play at all - full stop! I just detest them
-
Yze replacement
More to the point is that there is more than one senior assistant type that we could look at ... or perhaps we will look at someone who is just an assistant that might be able to step up into the Yze role. Could it be someone from within like Chaplin? But again, how much influence and responsibility do these senior assistants have elsewhere? (the ones where the head coach is boundary-side) Our club itself may well know but what do we know? The appointment may well be an extremely important one as he'll be very likely the right-hand man to Goodwin (unless we go down a different path with Goodwin upstairs again)
-
Yze replacement
Yes but the Tigers passed on him as their future head coach so he might have his limitations And there are quite a few head coaches that are on the boundary now so we may be looking at all the chief assistants that are upstairs So how many head coaches are boundary-side now?

Conversion rate of supporters into members
All things considered, we are doing extremely well Decades in the wilderness with so many bottom 3 finishes meant that youngsters weren't going to be barracking for us. You've gotta win Our numbers are related to our miserable past ... 22 years without finals '65 to '86 really hurt. As did that horror stretch from '07 to '16. 32 years of misery means we are/were coming from a long way back However, despite all that we've now got 70,000 members and our crowd are very healthy By contrast, the Pies seem to always be in contention thus their huge numbers ... but in reality, we are not that far being them (again, all things considered) It's a bit of a pipe dream but 10 more years of finals with a premiership or 2 and our numbers will increase exponentially Again, it's all about winning
-
Yze replacement
At issue is that we are in effect possibly in need of another head coach (type) Yze sitting in the stands with Goodwin on the bench points to an assistant like Yze would be making a lot of moves (or not) Maybe a lot of those moves are pre-planned but nonetheless, the type of assistant we might require isn't your normal run of the mill assistant Or, we might revert to Goodwin back up in the stands if we go down another path (a new, midfield coach being just that, a midfield coach only) It's all a bit vague though as we don't know how much responsibility Yze actually had

Lions have started well with a wide-open WR TD ... Packers look up against it already Edit: Halfway through the 2nd quarter and this is a rout! A shellacking! The Lions look really good but there's very little opposition

A Day at the Races
Moir Stakes tomorrow night looks to be suited for 'Imperatriz' again but it's at very short odds. Whilst I reckon it will win again, Rothfire & Uncommon James represent the value. Maybe the exotics? Up in Sydney on Saturday there are 3 big Group 1's. 2 firm favourites in the Metrop & the Flight Stakes but lots of value in both races. The Epsom is a wide-open race Click on any of the links for the Previews Metropolitan Hcp Flight Stakes Epsom Hcp
