Would be great to see a functioning fwd line tonight.

100+ points and JVR and Petty to take some strong marks and kick a few snags

I'll take it either way, but do you mean you're expecting/hoping for a 100+ point score or a 100+ point winning margin?

  2. For those of you not in Melbourne I can report that after a wet night, we are now bathed in glorious sunshine. From where I am (inner Melbourne) there's not a cloud in the sky. Hope it stays that way for the rest of the day.

  3. I seem to recall that most debuting players had two consecutive games before being omitted (unless they stayed in the side of course). Can anyone recall what the more strike rate is for our more recent debutants such as Woewodin? I'm not suggesting it's right or wrong...but if it is something the Match Committee or coach prefer, perhaps Tholstrup gets another game this week.

    The changes i'd make are

    In:

    Kozzie

    Hunter

Fullerton (FWD/second ruck) - Leave JVR in the forward 50 where he belongs

    Out:

    Salo

    Brown

    Woewodin

Who would you play in defence to replace Salem? Hunter? Or someone else?

Umm...am I reading this right? A player who is not playing last night should be dropped and a player who did play last night is to be promoted into the team? Or is there a joke here I'm not getting?

Only one is this Sat against Port.  A bye the following week.  The AFL have completely torched the VFL scheduling and comp.

Bowey approx four weeks but might be one or two more if there's any setbacks and/or he may need a week or two to build up his tank via Casey.

Does having an injured collarbone/shoulder affect fitness? Shouldn't Bowey be able to maintain his fitness level during his recovery?

I'm going to presume last night's performance was an aberration and assume wholesale changes aren't required. The forwards can hardly be blamed for not getting near the ball when the midfield was so soundly beaten. However, if it's possible, I'd like to persist with Rivers in the midfield. He's got pace, defensive skills when needed and unlike a lot of our midfield is capable of kicking on either foot. He's the perfect Brayshaw replacement.

I was at the game and astounded afterwards to find out that Chandler had had 18 disposals. I barely noticed him all night. Hence, no votes from me but happy to apologise if he was more influential than I thought at the time.

Nah that’s her part-time job. You see, the trick is to stalk the entire team at the one time thereby freeing up time for other things, for example, my precious chooks. Speaking of, I was at the stove the other day, turned around and this is what I was faced with…

😂 Jed (or Harry… who knows?) had got in through a window and climbed up onto a bar stool to let me know she was hungry.

I'm a bit nervous asking this...but what's on the screen in the background?

Agree with those wholeheartedly. For a combination of reasons, he hasn't hit form since the end of 2021. I'm not writing him off and agree there's still value in him, but not in the defensive structure.

Anecdotally, he also has seemed far more adverse to 'contact' over the past 18 months or so too.

For me Salem has lacked an intensity and hunger in his game since 2021 (though that could be said for several of our players).

I suggest you both watch Salem more closely. He's by far our hardest and best tackler. Opponents really feel it when he squeezes the life out of them with his crunching (but fair) tackles.

  10. Alan Johnson must be felling a bit schizophrenic (although in a good way). He's been compared with both McVee and Windsor today (see the Windsor thread). High praise indeed...to all three players.

    fair enough, wcw

but i don't think there are many bays anywhere near the alice

The Todd River in Alice Springs generally doesn't have water. The suburb in Melbourne called Bayswater is nowhere near the coast. The army has its base on the coastline in Darwin while the navy in the same city is situated inland. And red heads are called Bluey. That's what I like about Australia - all sorts of things can be the opposite of obvious.

I don't get the whole you can't start a debutant as a sub. Particularly now that it is not a medical one.

It's a team sport, and it's never been more important that players play their assigned role.

If the best thing for the team is for a debutant to start ad sub then so be it.

    The alternative is what?

Selecting them in the starting 22, even though that's not in the best interest of the team?

Or not picking them at all, even if

Goody has been criticised for playing favourites with selection, with the implication being it comes at the expense of the team

I think those criticisms are plain silly. But I understand why people would have an issue with it if he was selectiing favourites, not the best option.

    Team has to come first.

Same argument applies to the selection of a debutant.

Not picking a first gamer to be the sub made sense when the sub was medical rather than tactical. Staring a first gamer as medical sub meant that they may not even get on the ground which would be a major disappointment for the player and his family, especially if they had made a long journey from their home to wherever the game was being played.

Now, though, the sub gets to play some part of the game, even if only a small portion (yes, I'm aware of Schache in the final last year -but that's truly an anomaly). It means first-gamers can be the sub and their family can be confident they will see him play at some stage on that day.

Some posters have said that the plodders podders are not professionals. I vehemently disagree. I know of no other place I can get consistently high quality, intelligent, thoughtful and insightful analysis of the footy, not unembuggared by blokeyness, mindless product placement or just plain old imbecileness.

    Excellent word.

Their banner crew (in particular, when they play in Victoria) comprises mainly old Fitzroy supporters and they are the nicest people you could hope to meet (in the race before the game). No malice, no ill-feelings, just lovely people who wish us well.

Do you mean they are supporters who were alive and supporting Fitzroy pre-1996? Or are they younger supporters who still hold an allegiance to the club formerly known as Fitzroy? I ask, because if it's just the former, I wonder what will happen once that group is no longer around?

This young man is proof that MFCSS is not in fact carried in the blood or through some evil voodoo curse from beyond the grave.

It is instead developed as a Pavlovian response to repeated negative stimuli. If it can be contracted, it can be cured - and we must find the cure and ease the suffering of those unfortunates afflicted with it.

It may seem cruel but I think the answer involves frontal lobe lobotomy; however as this treatment is deemed "unethical" by the general public, I propose winning more flags as an alternative solution; evidence is promising in this area, as a recent study conducted in 2021 concluded that premierships seem to provide short term partial reduction in the severity of the condition.

    Further study required.

As an ethical alternative, I've always found a bottle in front of me to be better than a frontal lobotomy.

  16. What a wasted opportunity. This thread would have been much better if posted in the off-season. We could have gone to town on "um" versus "umm" and argued back and forth about whether an ellipsis has space between the dots or not.
