But the outs mentioned don't quite go to our backline traditionally.  Gus last year was spending more time through the middle, so his retirement effects both mids and backs.  But then our solution this season was to have Salem play more through the middle, enabled by Bowey taking on the crisp, accurate kicking role from the back.  So Salem and Bowey out leaves holes in the midfield for us again, even if we are able to supplement their other roles up back.  TMac and Howes have both had lots of exposure to our defence system so it makes sense they've been able to slot in nicely (even if disposal isn't a strong suit).

Separately Smith was finally coming good as a forward last season (and was likely seen as too unpredictable to be anything more than a back up defender given he wasn't used to our defensive system up back), so he's not really missing for our backline.  If anything, Smith was a bit of a Melksham replacement (and we missed Melk's banana goals last night!)

Windsor seems to have done a good job so far picking up Hunter's role, will be interesting to watch the battle for this spot as the season continues

Salem doesn't have the tank to be s full-time midfielder or the speed to play that role.

Our forwards 'almost refused' to penetrate the spaces they should have - overall laziness and poor coordination. There is no profitable gain in statically waiting for the 'perfect' incoming bomb.

That's the game plan they play with...

Only within the context of Goodwin's overall plan. He would be allowed to tinker but the game plan and the playing method is pre-set.

This year we chip it around and take on the corridor occasionally. Last two years it has been mainly a boundary game. It mirrors the senior team.

It was worse when the VFL team was unaligned such as we had with Sandringham. Our players were often played in positions or in ways that ran contrary to the needs of the MFC AFL team. Juice Newton and Sauntner was the classic dilemna

That maybe so but it's his job to win games as well and if he has to change things to win a game are you saying he cannot do that?

but who is the coach if the match day co-ordinator has minimal input into game plan and selection.

The reality is that the result does not matter nearly as much as the individual output. Southport for example is a strong team in this competition but few if any of its players have a chance at making an AFL team

So the Casey coach cannot make moves then or change how they play during the game interesting....

My problem with Derm and other special commentators of a certain type is that they spend the whole game telling you what the players "should have done" or "were trying to do" instead of what's actually happening. They're trying to be coaches when they should be analysts.

That's being an analyst in football, he can be hard to listen to at times and I understand why people don't like listening to him but he is mostly right in his comments.

I cannot stand him. He says every single comment like it’s the most profound thing you’re ever gonna hear. In his mind, every time he draws breath to make a comment he’s the Dalai Lama and we’re his devoted adherents.

But he knows what he is talking about in his analysis of player positioning and and what they are trying to do.

Love you history mention on the great Jimmy.

Oliver's one wood is his lighting hands plus others so if clean handling is slightly off so is clarry.

He must be 100% to go for his own sake I reckon

Was sarcasm but I guess some people missed that....

Regardless of what player says, for his own good (and the Club's) he should not be risked against the Tigers.

There's literally no upside to do so but plenty if we don't.

He might also need to be held back against the Cats.  Whatever it takes,  need to get his hand 95%-100% right and coming back in ripping nick.

If Jim Stynes can play with 2 broken legs and a fractured arm Oliver should be able to play, if not he's a sook and should swallow some concrete and harden the .... up

Both Cameron & Kosi should have got off. The sensible thing to do with those type of tackles is to judge them on the outcome.

If the tackled player is injured you are gone if not you are gone.

There would not have been a problem with Kossie if he had continued the action of his arms up at contact instead of turning his body to allow engagement of his shoulder to his head.  The decision on Maynard was wrong but if he also had contacted Gus with his arms up with the continuation of a smother Gus would still be playing, and would not have been an issue.

I think the draw on talent across all sports make that near impossible now.

...and, should you hold players like Reid back another year when they are clearly ready to step up for the benefit of others like Jeffo who are clearly not.

There is a fine line but a vast majority of kids coming into the system are not ready for the grind of AFL there are some exceptions and that will always be but in general yes I would hold them back an extra year I think the kids would benefit from it emotionally and physically, I know I am in the minority on this but it's my view....

  11. Young players come from a system where expectations sometimes exceed their ability, but in my view players can nurture and grow given the short amount of time they are given at AFL level but the one non negotiable aspect is when it's your turn to go into a contest or chase an opponent you go hard.

This has been Schache's problem seems like a nice guy but lacks intensity at the contest and that has been his downfall at the lions, dogs and now us and unfortunately Jefferson looks a bit like him at the contest.

I also believe that the under 18's competition should be scrapped and the under 19's competition replacing it as I think they are drafted to early, an extra year means they can concentrate on finishing school before they get into the system.

Would love to see the AFL/MCC decision makers let us use it occasionally.

The ground keeper could indicate when the surface is good, during minimal game weeks.

The session should be  private/closed., (no security risks) as we can't have closed sessions at either Gosch or Casey.

The argument for the other clubs is, why not allow them to use the number one ground and our spiritual home sometimes, as Gosch's is sub-standard.

Allow us to get some home ground advantage, like the majority of clubs have. Some of our home games are interstate and at Marvel, which adds a bit of a balance.

Is the grand final an advantage to us though ?

Hoping we make a few this decade, even take the lollies.

And then the tigers, pies, hawks all would want to do the same thing so don't think that's going to happen......

I'm not sure he was moved forward permanently at any point.  Looked more like he was playing a kick behind the ball and once the ball looked like staying inside 50 for a bit he was pushing up to try and provide an extra and try and impact there as well.

He was moved to the forward line..

Interesting that Turner went forward and looked excellent until he then went behind the ball once we had the lead. He is too good for VFL, even after a stint off, is this the attempt to find him an AFL spot as the third tall forward if/when Brown wains?

A good comeback against mature bodies on a skinny ground. There is something to work with, with Verrall, Pup and possibly Sestan.

What I like about Turner is he crashes packs with force when going for a pack mark, he is also a good reader of the play and a good kick and mark.
