I just read that the Matildas beat US for the first time at 28th attempt. An omen perhaps?

Can anyone suggest a pub in the inner city (Melbourne) to watch the match? I live in Clifton Hill.

I don't care what Barrett writes. I just want a win against Norf on Sat-dee!!

A Brisbane player (Hutton) wore an odd looking helmet years ago. He was likened to an armadillo.

It was cold but it is a winter sport, i bet all of those who didn't come yesterday will show when we play in finals.
I agree, oh well those who couldn't be bothered to go missed out on one hell o a game.
I was there.

MFC often/usually get off to slow starts. I'm not sure whether the coaching staff did it in an attempt to reverse that trend, but the team came out onto the ground way later than usual. Well, it certainly worked!!

Jack's my favorite player and I love watching him play, but I understand the criticism he received. For years he gave this perception that he didn't play with intensity and I think that gave people the reason to criticise him. If you're a footballer, you can be criticised. It comes with the territory and no one is excused.
What I often wonder with Jack though, is that was his lack of confidence on the field (which was clear) manifested this "laziness" tag? In other words, Jack lacked confidence which meant he didn't give it his all as he doubted his own abilities/was afraid of failing and disappointing. A lack of quality coaches compounded this issue until Roos came a long and started to work on these confidence issues.
I think Jack has had mental demons on the field, and I think anyone watching him in 2013 and some of 2014, 2015 could see that. Credit to Jack though, he's been able to realise Football isn't everything, which has probably helped him with the criticism, and fortunately his football has turned around which means he's enjoying life even more but still not riding the emotional rollercoaster of a win/loss mentality that football can have on many players.
That's such a good post.
Everyone's got a Jack story. A vivid memory I have is after a loss at Etihad. The team had performed very badly, but Jack wasn't too bad. As the team walked off, a supporter totally "lost it" and was screaming hysterical abuse at the team. Jack stopped in his tracks and glared at the "supporter". I admired him for that.

Usually an attempt to kick a torpedo punt ends up as its poor relative ... the mongrel punt !!

I do question Goodwin on our forward structure. We are one of the worst sides in the competition for converting forward 50 entries into scores, and the big reason for that is that we consistently bomb to the top of the square. It's far too predictable, we don't have the forwards to take the pack mark at the end of it and it doesn't fit in with the rest of our gameplan. Last night it not only cost us the opportunity to score, but it repeatedly turned into a 12 point play when Adelaide ran the ball the length of the ground and goaled. As much as Adelaide looked better than us on the night, if we'd actually scored those goals instead of conceding them we still could have won.
The reason I think this is a massive coaching fail is that Goodwin consistently plays an undermanned forward line to get extra players into the middle. At the centre bounce our half-forwards are at the back of the square looking to charge in and rush the contested ball forward. That's great, but when we get a clean clearance the players are banging the ball long in to the 50 (presumably on instruction) to a 6-4 outnumber where the defence is already set up to protect that space because WE ALWAYS PUT IT THERE! The only time our attack has looked dangerous all year has been when we had no tall options and had to work the ball around and find the open man.
I do love the direction the club is going and the work Roos and Goodwin have done, but this is a clear fault in the way we play and I can't understand the coaching group allowing it to continue.
Spot on. Great analysis.

Last night's match was easily his best match for MFC.

I knew they were out watching on the TV, but I didn't realise just how out they were. Nev loses that one on one and they could have strolled in and raffled the goal.
Nev actually went to ground. If Frostie hadn't come in, Carlton were away. Having said that, Nev's second effort once he got to his feet was great. I think it was a joint effort, but Frostie's efforts seem to have been overlooked.

His last play - The huge spoil that sent him to the ground made me groan as he didn't get enough on the ball but his tenacity to immediately jump up and get back in the contest with Simpson and then beat him was insanely good.
He also has Frostie to thank for helping him out.

Wow, number one moment for this round of AFL - Nev's amazing save and our last goal! Go Dees
Agreed, but Frostie's efforts in that passage of play were just as good/important.

Kent has to go out. Cannot or does not bend over to pick the ball up, cannot take a mark above his head and again shirked several contests today.
I don't think he adds anything to the team. Hardly ever wins a one on one. Always takes the easy option.
You forgot his habit of going to ground.

Great to win despite playing poorly. Best were obvious, TMac, Clayton, Nev et all.
There were some who could be forgiven for poor games. Hoges + Smith. But really. Kent + Stretch were terrible.
And some of the turnovers from experienced players were shocking. Lewis + Vince.
This was a match that MFC would have lost in previous years. That's the difference between this team, and MFC teams of previous years.

Surprised to see Petracca on the starting bench: Christian Petracca, Billy Stretch, Cameron Pedersen, Josh Wagner
Hope he doesn't get stuck there for 12 minutes like Clarrie did at the start of the Sydney game.
Would prefer he starts on the field - we need the best possible start from the first bounce.
Agreed. How often is MFC a goal down after 1/2 minutes? Answer: too often.

Agree with most posters. He has really underperformed.
Hopefully he puts in a good one today.
