  1. If the club rates him as Pick 30, and we are forced to take him with our second rounder, then the choice is simple. We pass. That means the guy we pick up will (hopefully) be better than him. Cut throat industry and no brownie points for picking up a guy just because his dad played here a generation ago. Do whatever it takes to get the BEST list possible, not the most sentimental.
  2. You do realise Petracca weighs exactly 20 more kilos than Billy. 20. .11 of a second is not much to hang your hat on.
  3. Leaving aside the obvious idiocy of this idea, with a little reformulation it might work. How about the same trade instead of us using Pick 3? So Melbourne give up Pick 2 to Collingwood for Beams, trade Beams to Brisbane for Pick 4 and Merret. Assuming we think that Brayshaw will slip to Pick 4 anyway, essentially we get Merret for free.
  4. I think Varcoe would be a horrible addition! Silky outside midfielder at the best of times, soft injury-prone downhill skier at the worst of times. Can utilise his strengths at Geelong with strong inside midfielders feeding the ball out to him. Will not have the same luxury at the dees and will be found out. Struggles to find his own ball and compete in one-on-ones. Not the sort of player we need right now.
  5. Free Agent compensation is completely independent of an application for special assistance. For one, considering the amount of free agents that have left clubs, the AFL has much less discretion awarding FA compensation. They just look to a previous FA getting a similar salary/length of contract and say "oh, he went for band 1? Then this club will get band 1." Special assistance is at the ultimate discretion of the AFL. And they dogged us again.
  6. It is absolutely ridiculous to say that Roos is only concerned about things that will affect the club while he is coach. Roos was brought in to drive culture change and build an environment capable of producing sustained success. That's the whole premise of the succession plan - and Roos was never going to be around for said success. Paying overs for a superstar simply to make himself look better is the antithesis of everything Paul Roos stands for.
  7. Dangerfield for Pick 2 & 3 doesn't smell like a Paul Roos kind of deal to me.
  8. Surely pick 3 would be enough for us to land Shiel or Treloar. Think I'd prefer those 2 over Mitchell. Everyone keeps talking about how much of a gun Mitchell is. But I struggle to see how a player being kept out of a side by the likes of Lloyd, Cunningham and Rampe is the superstar that everyone makes him out to be.
  9. Superficially it seems that Goodwin would go straight to Adelaide. But you never know how these things play out. The opportunity to learn under a master coach like Roos is a once-in-a-career opportunity. Especially if he sees himself being a long term head coach, it could be an excellent career move to pick the Dees. Also it could be that his family is settled here in Melbourne, and don't want to move back to Adelaide. Obviously I'm just surmising - I have no inside info. But it is entirely within the realm of possibility that he chooses the Dees over his alma matter.
  10. Biggest difference between us and them? All their top draft picks have made their prelim final team. Literally all of them. Lets hope Roosy and co. can work their wonders like last off season and right the wrongs of the past.
  11. I'm buoyed by all the interest in Frawley. The more competition there is for his services, the more lucrative his contract will be, on the more likely we will get Pick 3 as compensation instead of an end of first rounder. See ya chip - hello Angus Brayshaw!
  12. Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but could we trade Pick 2 to GWS for Jono O'Rourke and Sam Frost? Would be the classic Roos 2-for-1 trade ala Pick 2 for Tyson and Salem. Would that be better than drafting Petracca or Brayshaw?
  13. I'll put a little caveat to this by saying that I've not seen Gwilt play that much. But I happened to be tuning into St Kilda last game of the year against Adelaide. Gwilt did 2 egregiously bad turnovers in a row which led directly to goals going the other way. Jack Grimes-esque. Really don't know how much this guy will improve our team.
  14. 4 years in the system. Shows demonstrable skill yet starved for opportunities as can't crack the midfield. …This has Paul Roos written all over it.
  15. Leaving aside the veracity of the Jono O'Rourke comment - how on earth would Jono (let alone his cousin) know anything about Watts' behaviour?
  16. lulz. GWS probably wouldn't even do picks 2 and 3rd rounder for Cameron alone.
  17. There's an implied freedom of political communication that is derived from the constitution. This allows "free speech" in respect of making political comments or criticising the government. It does not extend to normal/every day speech. Hence my point - people cannot go spouting racially or religiously charged comments and hide behind a veil of "free speech". That concept does not exist here like it does in the states.
  18. Has 12 posts, says he'll never post again if wrong.
  19. Free speech does't give you carte blanche to say whatever you want - It only extends to political communications. Have a read of our constitution before speaking such carp. Racial or religious vilification should always be singled out and condemned.
  20. I ambivalent about Watts. Long has the time passed where I hope he turns into an effective AFL player. It may happen one day, it may not. I don't really care. BUT in saying that, I still think we should keep Watts on the list. We'll be turning over so many players this offseason that incoming quality will be diluted. For all his deficiencies, Watts is still undeniably better than some pick 50 18-year old. Plus Next year is his 7th year on the list. At the end of 2015, we can still trade him without losing him to free agency. Realistically I don't think his currency could drop any more, so we may as well hold onto him for 12 months. The alternative is that he improves - which leads to him either staying on the list or becoming useful trade bait. Either way, it would be more wise to keep him for next year.
  21. Wow that's a significant achievement! Do you know where you can find the individual stats for 2014?
