The jump is fine, not quite sure about the "Jones" tramp-stamp though...

One of Hogans biggest strengths pre-draft was endurance. -
My inside mail says the same thing. If St. Kilda take Petracca, we'll take McCartin. Personally I think this is a good choice. I understand we need more midfielders, but of the other potential Pick 3s, none of them are true mids. Laverde = Half back/forward flanker Lever = KPD Weller, Ahern, Duggan = all rated a level below McCartin in overall quality. If there was another stand out midfield option, I could understand taking them over P-Mac. But there's not - in which case we should go the best available, and that means watching the McCartin and Hogan tag-team rag doll defenders for the next 10 years.

True. Although in the video it seemed Howe was only about 4 secs behind McDonlad, with Viney 5 second behind again. That's pretty damn good for those guys (even if Tmac admitted to running a slow-ish time) -
So essentially we traded Frost for Pick 23...

Why do you think several clubs aren't paying 100% TPP? It's not some strategic football department move. It's a budgetary constraint that unfortunately affects the footy department. We were damn-near insolvent before Jimmy's debt demolition campaign and for the first time in years have become financially stable. But its a precarious position based on our profit last year. While we can sit back in our lounge chairs and say "we should pay Evans and Mckenzie out", the reality of the matter is we probably don't have the money to do so.
-
I'm over being nervous about our players doing well at other clubs. It didn't work for Sam at the Dees - but if Geelong can somehow unlock any potential he has, then good luck to them.

Big challenge will be for Viv to play 15+ games at AFL this year. I'm not expecting anything massive, but I'll consider it a successful year of he plays consistent footy and cements his spot in the side.
-
There's only one problem with this that people don't seem to be understanding - we don't have the money to pay players out. Last year we made a minuscule operating profit. Dropping $120k to pay out Evans (let alone McKenzie too) would instantly turn that into a loss. We don't have the same luxuries as the bigger clubs.

Relation to Josh over at Freo? Highlights look pretty damn good.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - ANGUS BRAYSHAW

I can tell you from a credible source inside the club that this idea is patently false. The whole recruiting team made a calculated decision to pick Toumpas over wines, and were ecstatic that Jimmy slipped through to Pick 4. The "Mark-Neeld-overrode-Viney-at-the-last-minute" song and dance is complete garbage. Unfortunately Jimmy hasn't come on as expected (yet). Sometime you just get it wrong. -

I believe a life ban is in order. -
It's that time of the year, so thought I'd get the ball rolling on some interesting ideas to keep us pre-occupied. With the NBA thinking of raising their draft age to 20, its begs the question whether we should do something similar here. IMO, raising the draft age to 20, or even 19, would have huge positive implications for the league. From the perspective of clubs, they can be much more confident with the ability of young players and their capacity to take to a professional environment. If draftees can dominate against men an other talented juniors even at 20, then clubs can lock in top 5 picks knowing they have a much higher chance of drafting a superstar. Many of our own failed draft selections could have been avoided through this simple mechanism (erghmm, Jordan Gysberts and Lucas Cook, erghhm). From perspective of draftees, it gives them time to mature and gain a better work/life balance. Many AFL players go straight into the system at 18, and when they finish 6 years later realise that they're 24 with no idea which direction to take with their lives. Having a year or 2 before entering the system gives them time to start a uni degree or part time work, allowing them a more holistic and healthy view of life as young adults. From the perspective VFL/lower leagues, they will benefit greatly with the influx of talent from all the 19-20 year olds. Would gain popularity and potentially even a decent fan base and financial viability. Some negatives I see would be logistical issues during implementation (who do the clubs draft the year that 18 year olds can't get drafted?). Also the AFLPA will no doubt be in uproar over the lost salaries of the new draftees while they play in the lower leagues. However I still think these are a necessary evil to ultimately improve the function of the league as a whole. Thoughts?

I've been told be a credible source that our choice is between Petracca and McCartin, and we will be taking whichever one St. Kilda doesn't.
-
McCartin is our man. I've been looking at the phantom drafts for 2013 and 2014. It seems both Jesse Hogan and P-Mac have the same "player comparison", a guy by the name of…Jonathan Brown. 2 of them in the same forward line?

The fact that Gill would make such a fundamental flaw proves how much the AFL are in denial about the changing landscape. He doesn't even know the difference between free agency and trading! How can you expect them to regulate, let alone rectify, a system that they themselves don't properly understand. Bloody amateur hour over at AFL HQ.

Unfortunately I'm too young to have watched Robbie play. My dad talks about him as the singular reason why he watched the Dees throughout all those horrible years. As he says, "as bad as Melbourne were, without fail every week Robbie would do something to make you come back the next week". Flanagan is, yet again, spot on.

This. Maybe he's Cale Morton 2.0? In which case GWS did well to get Pick 19.

You think St Kilda are going to swap Pick 1 for 2 - giving up the best 18 year old in the country - for Jack Fitzpatrick? Give me a break. Fitzy can't get a regular gig for the 2nd worst side in the league. He has diabetes and can't kick. And you think St. Kilda will give up pick 1 for that? And Shiel is worth Pick 1 by himself, let alone Shiel AND pick 22. Sure I'd love that trade. But there will be icicles forming on satan's pitchfork before that goes through.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JEFF GARLETT
Vanilla Gorilla replied to Demon3's topic in Melbourne Demons
Liam Pickering on Jeff Garlett: "It will get done (moving to Carlton), I've spoken to Andrew McKay and Josh Mahoney. Essendon were in it as well. Roosy wants him not just in the forward pocked but more up the ground using his speed." "There were a number of reasons Jeff dropped off this year, injuring his shoulder at the start of the year and a few little off-field things. He just wasn't settled, we've been working pretty hard on the welfare side of it and he'll get a fresh start now." Are players reluctant to go to Essendon? "It didn't affect Jeff, but I think there still is a massive question mark on what is happening at Essendon, whereas Melbourne is settled on their coaching staff." For anyone doubting the effectiveness of the succession plan, look no further. Though we may be terrible on-field, the idea of having a stable long term coaching staff with a clear plan is highly appealing to many players who feel directionless in their own careers. Not that Garlett is a world beater, but its certainly a point of difference that MFC has over other clubs that make it a more attraction destination.- 568 replies
