How about James Sutherland? He mentioned Melbourne in a positive context (not about CEO role - longstanding fan loyalty without success) in his interview with Gerard Whateley this morning. Perhaps he would like to be the one to oversee that eventual success, without the constant travel?

When you look at the AFL ladder there is a function that lists the highest score kicked of each team. Melbourne had a highest score in 2017 of 122 points (round 10 v Gold Coast Suns). This is 16th in the league. Why can we not kick bigger scores? Surely this is something to be looked at in preseason. Knocking off the Saints gave us 11 wins for the season the most since 2006 when we chalked up 13. Quite a milestone and we are not finished yet.

Hat's off to Goodwin its this match. He drew some heat by leaving our Watts, Frost and Salem, and at 3/4 time would have been under enormous pressure. He steadied the troops and they performed well in the last qtr. I wonder if his next gamble is to rest a couple of the younger players for this week eg Oliver and Petracca. Both are exhausted. Look what a rest did for Hannan!

Just put myself through watching the replay of the last quarter. Here is a not so negative take. Firstly with the wind we needed to have a marking forward staying deep, old style. The last goal we got was the kick from Trengove near the boundary, sailed 65m everyone misjudged the flight and McDonald took the mark and gaoled. This was the way to score. Secondly the last goal of the game was with 7 1/2 minutes to go - in retrospect the match winner by North - and it was a complete fluke. Brown lines up for goal from 50 close to the boundary, shanks the kick and it lands short in the hands of Simpkin. You know it was your lucky day when this is happening. Thirdly from then on we defended well, and North couldn't score another major. Fourthly unfortunately our forward 50 entries were poor, as noted above by SFebey. Often it came in rushed and flat with no prospect of a mark - and North were outnumbering us. We should have realised a forward 50 mark was like gold with the wind behind us - and also that the umpires were not paying marks unless 100% held, nor were they paying chopping of the arms. Infuriating. Then finally we had our moment -- Tom McDonald takes a good mark and centres to hibberd, directly in front only 50m out with a roaring gale behind him. 5 points behind, 2 minutes to go. This was the moment for Goodwin's favourite theme 'composure'. And the ball was in the hands of one of our senior players who is a good kick. Perhaps that is why none of our leaders felt the need the intervene and yell out "stop, go back and take your time". Unfortunately Hibberd plays on, misses and that was the final score of the day. THis was really a sliding doors finish, it could so easily have been different and we would have been describing it as a gutsy win. Disappointing but not disastrous.

I also watched Trenners closely from the top deck, which is good for seeing running patterns etc. I agree with Deanox observations especially his role as a 'structural general', he was very assertive at this and considering Port didn't kick a goal till close to half time you would have to say he was very effective. Seemed to slot in much better than Smith or Wagner. I think Trengove compliments Hunt at half back. We all love Hunt's dash but often he gets himself in a tight spot and kicks it to the opposition. Trenners provides a get out option, doesn't panic and almost every time hit a target. This was a big improvement to last week and Trenners really contributed to it.
