  1. Maguire is 3rd tall defender in line behind Sam Fisher (all-Australian) and Sam Gilbert (should have been all-australian) and couldn't get back into the team because there was no position for him (look at Max Hudghton and Zac Dawson situation). Talk to any St Kilda supporter and they'll tell you what Maguire means to the club and how good he is. Injury history is the major concern, granted. But our medicos would do their due diligence. Maybe pick 18 swap and get 3 best available for 1, 2 and 11.
  2. First of all I would like to state that I have the upmost confidence in the upcoming trade and draft periods under Barry Prendergast and reckon we're in good hands. Now.. for the topic.. Identification that a key weakness for the Dees is the lack of a Key POWER Forward (stating the obvious, I know). I don't and will not subscribe to the notion that picking up a proven 'experienced' power forward is a bad or the wrong move because of the following.. What a player like Barry Hall / Daniel Bradshaw / Brendan Fevola could add to our forward line - to assist in the development of guys like Jurrah and Watts to not only learn from but take some of the initial heat off their maturing bodies by taking the key backman - should not be underestimated. And should such an option present itself in the pre-season draft, we have the available funds to take advantage of this situation should the situation permit. The issue is enticing such a player towards the end of their career to join an emerging team still in their infancy with limited short-term upside. This option is therefore unlikely because we want a player who is willing to give their all for the mighty dees. CONSIDERATION - Matt Maguire can double as a key backman and as a strong lead-up forward who is known for his ability to take a strong grab overhead. The latter, I believe would pose greater benefit to the Dees. At age 25 could well be a consideration with our Pick 11 (assumed traded from Carlton for Brock) rather than taking a punt on KPF who may not cut the mustard.. i.e. end up with another Nick Smith / Luke Molan / Nick Gill scenario. With the Saints' abundance of riches in its backline as far as talls go, I imagine the Saints (who it appears increasing likely will reluctantly give up Matt Maguire) could do with pick 11 in the draft considering its first pick is 16 in what could be a win/win for both clubs. Thoughts?
