  1. Yeah, I also note that Carlton have scored big from clearance, where we are the best(?) if not second best at defending stoppage, and scoring more from stoppage than the opposition (minus against Brisbane). It means play the way we've been playing (minus Brisbane) and the Blues will have difficulty beating us.

As for Geelong next week, minus Danger, means historically they'd go for a super slingshot slanted game, even with Danger in the team.

It'll be interesting to see if we try and concede territory and play from our back half. With no Danger, our scores from stoppage and our ability to defend from stoppage will be greatly improved.

    Exceptionally limited preseason.

Selected to play AFL on the back of zero VFL form and lack of preparation.

    Head-scratching selection decision.

    Will turn it around.

That's how highly they rate him and how important he is to the structure.

Agree, he will turn it around.

As to Schache, yes we can. We’ve seen enough of him at senior level to know he’s not the answer.

As to Fullarton, we need to see more at VFL level. If he keeps up his recent form and Petty doesn’t improve, then sure, the pressure will come.

Injury permitting, he'll come good before it gets to this IMO.

Potential reality check coming; for when you look at the results, we haven't beaten anyone of significance except Port (and Collingwood has made that look less Impressive)!

    Neither have Geelong or Carlton.

Geelong have beaten: St Kilda by 8 points in Geelong, Adelaide by 19 points, Hawthorn by 36 points, Bulldogs by 4 points, North down at Geelong by 75 points and Brisbane in Brisbane by 26 points. When we played Brisbane we were clearly cooked, that's the only win by Geelong you could potentially rate...

Then over to Carlton, they've beaten: Brisbane by 1 point (after being down by 7 goals), Richmond by 5 points, North by 56 points, Fremantle by 10 points and GWS by 19 points. They also lost to Adelaide in Melbourne by 2 points. So the only potentially impressive win was against GWS last week and if you're being kind, Brisbane in Brisbane.

So like both of those teams, the only win you could say was impressive by us was Port in Adelaide, but also backing that up off a 5 day break to beat Adelaide in Adelaide was solid too.

Meanwhile, Collingwood played Port in Melbourne, and Port away from Adelaide are half the team they are at Adelaide Oval. Not comparing apples with apples...

I love how some of our supporters think our results are somehow occurring in a vacuum.

At what point did I say anything about them scoring from stoppages?

The point I made was that we were smashed in them. Luckily for us our defence is out one wood. Against better sides, we can’t afford to be belted so hard at the stoppages.

Again, how were we smashed in stoppages? We won overall stoppages! We lost centre clearance by -2 and won around the ground by +9.

I can't take you seriously if you're just going to write twaddle.

I think it is completely obvious that his confidence is shot. Posters say his attitude is like he wants to be in Adelaide. I disagree completely. I believe if he kicks a couple of goals in a row we will then see a completely different player. The question is: should he go to Casey to get those goals?

He's clearly a confidence player and always has been.

Playing back next to May and Lever allowed him to do his thing without being one of the main men really. He had a difficult return in his first game of 2021 (against Hawthorn was it?), but after that settled in nicely to our defence and by the end of the year was clearly confident and felt at home.

Now he's being asked to lead the forwardline with a younger JVR and Disco.

I've said it before, but if he stays injury free this year, he will kick a bag at some stage and get his mojo back.

At the moment, a player like Petty needs to find that mojo at AFL level, in so many ways the VFL competition is useless. So I'd be strongly against him going back there, but will back the FD if that's what they think, but I doubt they will.

The strategy I think will be to have very basic KPIs, getting to as many contests as possible, bringing the ball to ground where he can't mark it, making sure his opponent doesn't intercept on him and eventually the wheel will turn and he'll get his 'bite of the cherry' as they say.

He does all this and stays fit and healthy and he can play a huge role for us this year. A match winning one at times.

Hard to read and hard to win.

We may be 5-4 with increased pressure on Goodwin and some maligned players (injured or not) - the pressure to become insular and protective of our backline will be strong and revert to our inert and boring 22-23 style.

We have to put up the losses and be confident that we are on the right path.

Even if it’s for the sake of 2025.

    I completely agree.

The Cats will play keepings off. Take it to the bank. The key for us is to stop that and put pressure on the ball carrier. They switch at every opportunity and try to control tempo. We have to cover the ground well to contain them

The Richmond game was scrappy and we turned the ball over a lot but the Cats will be a different stye of game

One thing Goodwin is good at is ensuring that the first halves of games are a scrap and an arm wrestle. He likes to stay in games for long periods before grinding out wins.

Geelong are totally beatable and we will have to play well to do it. A number of players need to lift but most of all our midfield.

Our backline this year has been awesome and deserve a huge amount of credit for keeping us on track while our mids have gone missing

It'll be a really interesting game, because in many ways we've taken Geelong's blueprint more than Collingwood's, so we'll both likely be playing a similar game style. Slingshot from D50 or clean scores from stoppage. The problem is we may want to take more territory next week because their forwards are so dangerous and their backs zone off so well.

If you look at the draw though, Geelong have beaten no one of significance despite being unbeaten.

I think Max and Fritta may hold the key. If Max can get his marking happening around the ground and Fritta plays a defensive role on someone like Stewart, but can snag a few, it'll go a long way towards the result.

We'll also need more from our three bulls in the middle.

    I did no such thing.

For petes sake, a third of the way through the season we are 5-2, 4th on the ladder with the 4th best percentage of any team, having played 3 of our 7 games interstate.

5-2. 4th on the ladder. 4th best percentage. With three of our best 22 to come back in (salo, Hunter and melk).

And it feels as if we are no good?

Man oh man we see the game differently.

Change Bowser for Hunter and very likely Melk for McAdam and I agree completely.

As someone fully on board Team Change The Way We Play I agree that there was always going to be regression as we did this alteration adaption.

But make no mistake - there are no guarantees we hit this upside that is readily obvious and continue to be ‘in it but not win it’ - especially when the margins are so small.

We did not need Salem and Bowey to miss extended periods and we can that too into a plus, but we are going to go through impotent periods in the next two weeks and I am intrigued to see what we can achieve. I can’t see us winning either this early into our Renaissance to Interesting Footy but I just want us to continue to counter and pivot and run-and-gun.

One can’t ascribe our fortunes just yet…

This to me is now why it will be hard to get a read on the Geelong and Carlton games.

If we've got Woey, Lever and TMac trying to hit those angled kicks into the corridor versus Bowser or Salo, it is pretty likely we'll turn the ball over far more often than we would without those two injured. Huge outs.

You’re kidding aren’t you? The centre clearance may have been even, but everything else was deplorable.

Again, look at @binman's post. They failed to score a single goal from stoppage.

You're just inventing a different game inside your own head. It's very odd behaviour.

You too, dazzle. You can like old Reemer's post all day, but your viewpoint is detached from reality.

We can’t expect to have that many turnovers and beat the better sides.

Each game is different. It depends what our pressure is like on the opposition. If they're turning it over as much, then you can't read into a specific stat too much.

If we let Carlton waltz it out of the middle to Curnow and McKay it won’t be 23-24 at half time.

    It’ll be 23-76

We also couldn’t hit the side of a barn when we did turn it over last night, can’t blame fatigue like against the lions.

When did we let them waltz it out of the middle? They had maybe 1 or 2 put the front clearances the whole night and so did we...

I fully agree about getting games into them, and the club is doing it at the right time. Windsor is a lock, and I was glad to see Turner back in.

Howes, Laurie and Woewodin are good, and long term I can see Woewodin being at the club for a good long career. I can see the other two leaving for more game time with another club - like Jordon. However, at the current stage of their development they can show lack of awareness, iffy decision making, and all three are quite slow. I hope Bowey & Salem recover soon. If we go into the Carlton or Cats game with the same 5 young players, these weaknesses will be exploited. I am VERY happy to be proven wrong.

Completely disagree on Howes mate, but each to their own.

Oh right, yeah, I hate it when young players play their roles really well and we win…

What effing planet am I on? We are 5 and 2 and just doubled a teams score while possibly unearthing a possible medium tall option that could answer a few questions in the short, medium and long term.

And we are obviously struggling to get our new gameplan focussed on back half turnover and quick movement from there because Salem and Bowey are missing and it can expose Lever, May, TMac more than we would like.

I am glad we are persisting and not succumbing to what ‘better suits’ our defensive stars because it will benefit us in the long term, even if we drop a few games getting there.

Very good point and probably something I've overlooked.

Windsor had 6 kicks but a couple of times he kicked straight to a Tiger which lost us momentum

Yeah, he made errors. It'll happen. It was also easily the biggest crowd and occasion he's played in front of.

He'll be better for the experience. And when the time came to kick a crucial goal he did.

Some nice cameos from some of the younger, less experienced players, a rollicking performance from Ed Langdon and a real injection of speed and sure ball handling from Pickett made the second half a pleasure to watch.

I missed this, but my sister noted that Billings often started on the wing and Langdon played significant minutes as a half forward. I think it was a great move, obviously they rotated a bit between half forward and wing, but it really enabled Lingers to get into the game.

Aside from some of his ball use, I think Billings was decent too. If he's getting the footy 15-20 times a game, we'd usually be happy.

They both played back of stoppage clog up space roles too and along with Windsor and ANB are vital to the stigyness of our defence.

I understand the logic to a point. We're generally looking to make the opposition turn the ball over in the middle and on the wings where there is space to rebound and hopefully kick to a more open forward line, sure. But I don't think any forward whose in the vicinity of an opposition player disposing of the ball should just 'let them advance up the ground'. I'm sure you didn't mean this in that way. I'd just like to see better intensity when there's opportunity to force the opposition the hack the ball out of defence as apposed to clean chains of ball movement which is happening too often.

No matter how good our team defence is further up the ground. More strings to our bow! We need to score in multiple ways and if we can cause opposition mistakes deep in forward 50 we should still be trying to turn them into scores.

I think the new game plan is great with trying to create more spaces in forward 50 but its just not realistic that we will be able to do this consistently in every game. We will need to play the forward half pressure game still at times depending on matchups, weather, fatigue etc.

No, I agree. I think it's really important that we don't allow the handball receive from our back half, because that quick ball movement has the potential to cut us (or any team) up.

But I don't think we mind allowing the chip play off our kick out, but we do mind the run and carry out of our A50. Which is why Kozzy's pace is so important in combination with Chandler and ANB.

But I also agree that if possible turning the ball over in our forward half way gives us a good chance to score too, although often these shots are pressured snap shots.

Yes but you would think some better forward pressure would help as well causing poorer opposition kicks/disposal out of the backline which results in the turnovers on the wings. I do think its coming out too easily and too cleanly far too often. But part of that is playing a taller forward line as well.

But then there are opposition players in the hole in our forward 50. Much better to let them advance up the ground and then have space to go back into. IMO anyway.

Say that next week, because if we play like that vs cats it will be over by half time and it will be the lions game all over again. All fine if we want to limp into the 8 and make up the numbers but I think most people here would expect more

I'm sorry but this is such a nuff nuff argument. We weren't playing Geelong. We were playing an injury depleted low rung opposition and we knew that. Not to mention, you don't think Yze is a smart enough coach to bring the game down a few notches to make it an arm wrestle?

Yes, play like the first half against Geelong and we won't score much and will probably concede more, but next week is a totally different game.

ABC radio said Clarry was hit behind play. Possibly an open palm rather than a closed ‘fist’. Sounds like he’ll have a case to answer.

The field umpire was right there. He saw the hit and instead of issuing a 50 to Fritta who had the ball 45m out, he just watched the players go after MP. Pathetic umpiring.

We had our worst 22 or loss the round prior.

Followed by our worst 43 pt win the next week.

Any danger of winning a centre clearance? Or any clearances at all?

Why? We're 5 and 2, and it has little to do with centre clearance numbers...

What happened to our forward pressure? It was a staple of our game in 2021 and seems miles away now. I get we are playing a different style but we still shouldn't be letting teams waltz it out with ease.

We're trying to cause turnovers on the wing, so I don't think we care too much about defending high in the field unless we a protecting a lead.
