  1. You know Dwight Howard would dwarf Sandilands in the ruck and LeBron is a couple of cm taller than Jamar...

    What an epic midfielder.

I wonder how he'd go head to head with Brent Harvey...

LeBron to me would be the perfect Pavlich-type big midfielder, switching thru CHF. Dominant beast!

  2. I'd like to see the following changes made this week.

IN: Cheney, Strauss, Scully, Trengove, Bate

OUT: Garland (knee/precautionary rest), Rivers, Bennell, Bruce, Watts (all omitted)

I'm well aware i'm going to be howled down for a couple of these suggestions, so i'll try and give as good an explanation as i can for each omission.

Garland one speaks for itself. Rivers was pretty close to worst on ground on the weekend, and has been in pretty poor form for a few weeks now. Needs a spell IMO, and against the mobile Carlton forward setup, has no obvious match-up.

I understand Bennell played a ripper up in Darwin, but against the Cats he was non-existent. 5 disposals and just 3 tackles in 77% game time (Aussie had 6 tackles and 8 disposals in 73% TOG) is not good enough. He looked tired and I think he'll benefit from a week at VFL level, or even from a rest a la Scully/Trengove. Aussie deserves to keep his spot, as does Jetta, for their forward line pressure and creativity.

Bruce had his colours lowered on the weekend and IMO played the worst game he's had in a while. Whilst i don't think he will be dropped, i'd prefer to see a youngster like Cheney or Strauss get his spot as a medium defender in the backline. Both had strong games on the weekend for Casey.

This is the big one, and i know there will be many who disagree with me, but i think Watts deserves to be dropped after his performance against the Cats. Too many times he was caught playing behind Lonergan. He took no marks and had just 8 touches in 85% TOG. While he did have a couple of classy ones, overall he looked overawed and out of place against the strong Geelong unit. Yes the Cat's are good. And yes, he played some good footy against the Power and Eagles. But i don't think that's enough to keep him in the team with Matthew Bate coming back from injury. I really actually do hope he stays in, but in all likeliness, his name will be one of the first considered for omission with plenty of in form guys to come back into the side, and rightfully so.

We have a real chance to win this game, and IMO all players must be made to earn their spots. If they play poorly and there are others to come back into the side, they should be dropped. This should apply to all players, across the board. Even with developing key-position #1 draft picks.

Really wanted to squeeze Jordie McKenzie back in, but couldn't find him a spot.

    The teams/match-ups:

    B: Bartram, Warnock, MacDonald

    F: Betts, O'hAilpin, Henderson

    HB: Grimes, Frawley, Strauss

    HF: Robinson, Waite, Garlett

    C: Scully, Jones, Davey

    C: Murphy, Judd, Simpson

    HF: Trengove, Bate, Sylvia

    HB: Gibbs, Thornton, Russell

    F: Wonaeamirri, Miller, Green

    B: Joseph, Jamison, Walker

    FOL: Jamar, Moloney, McDonald

    FOL: Kreuzer, Scotland, Carrazzo

    Int: Morton, Jetta, Cheney, Gysberts

Int (from): Jacobs, Hadley, Browne, McLean, Anderson, Houlihan, Bower, Armfield

  3. We're playing the kid in the backline, but I'd like to see him have a run in the middle. That's where he played his junior footy wasn't it?

Nah, James has played most of his junior football off wing/half back flank. That's where he was used in the National U/18 Champs, where he was the designated kick-in player for Vic Metro, and his run and exceptional foot-skills stood out.

  4. Of Gys' 26 disposals, 10 were contested. He also had 4 clearances (not one), and just the one clanger.

His nomination will come sooner rather than later, no doubt.

Martin probably deserved this one for performances he'd put in in a number of Richmond losses. He was always going to get one as soon as they won. And he did have 11 clearances (which is amazing, despite the conditions).

  5. Out of all our young guns, Scully is the only genuine in-and-under midfielder. We're gonna need more than one, and Jones will be the next best.

This year Jones has been able to play more of an outside role with the inclusion of Scully, now Gysberts, and the stellar clearance form of Moloney (Ranked #2 in the league). IMO, Jones doesn't have the spatial awareness or quickness of hands to play as a true insider. He is wrapped up/caught too often, and unlike Scully and Moloney, doesn't seem to get his hands free often enough whilst being tackled.

  6. The guys 195cm, 102kg.

He has supreme pace, agility, evasiveness. His marking will be elite.

If O'Hailpin can make it from hurling, no doubt Falau can make it.

Very jealous, wish he was coming to the demons

How do u figure? I've seen Folau fluff a few high balls before in the NRL (like everyone there seems to, do any NRL players actually know how to 'mark' a ball without looking completely lost judging the flight?)

  7. Andrew Bogut might be a handy ruckman but he probably earns more than our whole team

Went to high school with him and can say with good authority that he is an absolute sh*t bloke. Big bombers fan too. No thanks.

If i was going from players in the NBA, hard to go past LeBron James and Dwight Howard. LeBron on the ball switching thru half forward, and Howard in the ruck.

  8. Scully - Gary Ablett Jr (!!)

    Trengove - Lenny Hayes

Gysberts - Simon Black / Scott Pendlebury

    Tapscott - Paul Chapman

McKenzie - Cam Ling / Brett Kirk

Grimes - Luke Hodge / Jim Bartel

    Morton - James Hird

Blease - Boomer Harvey / Leigh Montagna

Strauss - Jason Gram / Lindsay Gilbee

  9. Jones has him, simply because he's generally a better kick than Moloney

    Could not agree less.

Beamer's field kicking is largely underrated by most here IMO. Sure he's not the best kick, but he's certainly a consistently better kick than Jones, especially in the last 2 years.

  10. I don't understand why the coaching staff is showing so little imagination to experiment with him on the forward line. His mind speed and hand skills could be the killer we want up forward.

    Agree

  11. Wouldn't touch Taylor Walker with a ten-foot-pole. His defensive efforts are about as good as our old #24's were. Not sure we need another defensive passenger in the forward half, ever again. (Don't get me wrong, I loved Robbo, but i'm glad as anyone that we no longer have to put up with his pathetic half-hearted attempts at chasing and tackling. Walker brings that with him.).

The other issue i have with Walker- and i'm basing this solely on what i've read and heard about him and nothing else- is the perception that he has attitude problems, i.e. thinks "his sh*t don't stink" and that he feels he should be a walk up start to the team, based on talent alone. Have read and heard several times that Neil Craig and his FD have wanted him to lift his work-rate at SANFL level as he has ample talent to be a real quality player, but instead he has always just 'done enough' rather than really tried to lift himself to the next level. No thanks.

Rhys Stanley at the Saints looks a really good prospect. Is he injured at the moment? I'm completely baffled as to why he isn't getting a game with Riewoldt out and Kosi doing sweet-FA. He looked quite impressive at the NAB cup this year with his marking and competing, is 200cm, young, agile and fast (won the GF sprint last year) and can take a contested mark in a pack and one-out. His kicking needs some work, and needs to add a few more kilos to his frame, but the 20-year-old has the tools to make it as a KPF and can help pinch hit in the ruck. Is yet to debut and was taken pick-47 in 2008 - Saints would be unhappy to lose him but he may be coming out of contract at years end.

Jesse White at the Swans is the other i'd want from that list. Can play forward and is an adequate 2nd ruck, is only 22 and already has had some good games at league level, as well as a couple of 10-goal bags in the Swans reserves. Would probably cost a bit though.

Dawes would be good, but unlikely.

  12. He had a good game no doubt. I know he was second(?) in possessions but I don't remember him doing anything particularly remarkable with the footy in his hands. In retrospect he deserves a nod but I stand by my votes.

It's hard to notice what real in-and-under type players are doing sometimes, as many of their little quick handpasses and clearances happen in heavy traffic and are difficult to spot from the stands. They don't stand out the way ball-carriers do, but that doesn't make their games any less valuable or 'remarkable' as you put it. Beamer is one bloke i always make particular notice of at matches, namely his clearance and bullocking work in tight. He's a workhorse who never stops trucking along, and against the younger, weaker Richmond kids, he was just too strong and really IMO, nothing short of exceptional.

And statistically speaking - 37 disposals (13 contested), 9 tackles, 9 clearances, 9 inside 50's, 2 goal assists - that is one helluva game.

  13. Harsh on Beamer, thought he was great. Had a stack of clearances and i thought he and Flash were the major contributors to our midfield dominance.

Bennell's effort was very very soft. I know he's just a kid, but he's done it a few times in his career already. If he can't iron that out, it could be a fatal flaw to his game.

  14. OUT:

    Dunn - Bad. Just bad.

Warnock - Shocking today, out-marked and out-positioned too easily, was really lucky not to have had 7 or 8 kicked on him.

Miller - Bad. Really really bad.

Spencer - I understand he's young and raw and needs exposure, but he just isn't ready for AFL footy yet.

    IN:

    Sylvia - if fit

McNamara - IMO the most underrated of our youngsters on the list, can play tall-small, back or forward.

Martin - 2nd ruck replacement, pinch-hit up forward

Hughes - something needs to change in the forward line, Danny might just add a spark. Highly likely to do more than Miller or Dunn did today.
