  1. Hi,

Noticed Brent Moloney grab his lower leg/hamstring late in the last quarter. He tried to run it out by sprinting toward the forward flank (not smart). He was in obvious pan after that and he wont play next week. So I ask what to do now?

  2. Bartram - excellent and horrible

    Bate - great in bursts

    Bruce - quieter than normal

    Cheney - cool and composed

    Davey - just a genius

    Dunn - horrible when pressured

    Grimes - game to forget

    Johnson - good around ground

    Jones - not as prolific

    Maric - often seemed lost

    Martin - much to learn

    McDonald - good in close

    McLean - prolific but wasteful

    Miller - game to forget

    Moloney - tough and effective

    Morton - prolific and composed

    Petterd - not a target

    Robertson - had little impact

    Sylvia - excellent in bursts

    Warnock - liked his game

    Whelan - a great return

    Valenti - little to excite

Mate that is the worst appraisal of a game I have ever seen.

  3. According to Mike Sheahan's article in today's Herald Sun, Cale Morton is high up on the shopping list of GC recruiting manager Scott Clayton - LET'S GO SHOPPING

"He loves the Robert Murphy type: 184-192cm athletes with pace, skill and sound disposal.

Which is why Melbourne's second-year player Cale Morton is so high on his list.

When Melbourne took Morton at No. 4 in the 2007 national draft, Clayton supposedly had him at No. 1 on his wish list.

Given his stated aim is to have the competition's best player by 2014, Morton would be a priority.

The Melbourne youngster will be hard to shift. He has a bright future with the Demons and also has his two brothers, Mitch and Jarryd, living and playing in Melbourne."

Too right he will be hard to shift and I hope the club works damn hard to secure Cale at the club for a long, long time.

Sorry correct me if I am wrong but does Melbourne and Cale have to agree to this or do they just say " We want you"?

  4. As we are all aware if its one thing we dont lack it would be inside mids, though with the game progressing like it is

can we afford to carry 3 to 4 mids in our team at once? Im talking Moloney, jones, Mclean even Valenti.

Just want peeoples opinions on weather they see a possible three out of them four (jones mclean moloney) In say two years time when were pushing for finals. And if not i sure wouldnt wana be the one making the decision.

How about were try to draft a good ruckman to go with this plentiful quota of mids that would help!!!!

  5. I posted this in another thread but I thought it needed its own topic and a bit of elaborating. So here goes....

    "In the Back"

It's about time we abolish this wishy washy rule. Players falling to there knees, diving forward or carrying momentum forward when he was going to ground anyways, is not in the back. Also a player that chase down a opponent and fall forward in not "in the back" ITS A TACKLE!

The one and only time it should be paid is in a marking contest. The player would need to be whiplashed to receive a kick. But for heavens sake let up see a show of strength. Allow pushing in the side. It is a strong contact game.

    "Too High"

Unless a tackle clotheslines a opponent and rips off his head then this rule needs to go aswell. There are too many players shrugging their shoulders so the arm will slide up to cause a high tackle. Players also duck their heads and dive "INTO" head high tackles.

What ever happened to ducking the head? Players just go in head first for a soft free kick. Complete blight on the game and is just about cheating.

95% of free kicks in our game are soft and ruining the game. Bring back the show of strength.

    rule.

    "Secondary Bounce"

It makes our umpires look stupid and second rate. Its not apart of the history of the game. Either way a bounce is still 50/50.

Change the interpretation of these rules above and our game won't have anywhere near the "grey areas" of umpiring. It would also be alot easier to officiate.

Fans wont be so angry and frustrated that the game is going down the gurgler.

Something tells me this is how the game was umpired 50 years ago. Implement this and add the modern football player we have today, and we will have the best game on earth with out the stupid free kicks

    EASY!

    edit : spelling and grammar.

    Hi Golly,

I agree with everything you just said and share your frustration with the in the back rule. I concur with your thoughts about tackling from behind and feel this is a blatant miss interpretation of the most basic rule. These are not things the umpires can miss when trying to adjudicate upon, these are blatant, easy decisions to make when the flow of play is at a meander. The issue with all the these cases lies in the fact that the umpires have little or now feel for the game, seek attention and attempt to insight the crowd with ridiculous and pedantic decisions that leave fans miffed and officials seething. In my view there is not a close game go by where the umpires do not have an impact upon the flow of the game and its status. They have an understanding of the implications of their decisions and continue to make blunders that are glaringly incorrect. I can recall a game quite a few years ago at the SCG when River threw the ball back to Schnider whilst he was standing the mark after a free kick. I have never, even seen a more pedantic and biased decision in my 25 years of watching VFL/AFL football. There are examples of the blatant disregard and contempt these men show for the game. If they are left to continue on this vein they will surely ruin it before the decade is out that is for sure.

  6. Took a couple of great, brave marks in the backline too.

While he looks like a terminally ill patient (he is all skin and bones, it's frightening), he sure as hell doesn't play like one.

Keeps on improving and is a real chance to become elite in a couple of years.

    Ugh, no!

Bowden is the most useless possession gatherer going around. Half of his possessions are the result of Richmond [censored] farting around with the ball in the back-half.

I think the Jared Rivers injury tracker has just ground to a halt mate..... fingers crossed for him though

  7. Yesterday's game against Geelong made me realise the ridiculous amount of players currently on our list that just aren't up to AFL standard. Playing against the best of the best only emphasized this realisation. When I saw Joel Selwood lining up against Lynden Dunn on the wing, I covered my face with my hands. Out of frustration and envy for the game breakers that Geelong possess. We seem to have a lot of players around the 190cm mark that are neither here nor there. They aren't key position, yet they aren't midfielders, they lack pace, and they most definitely cannot kick.

Another player that fits into this category is Matthew Bate. Sure he works hard but when the ball comes to him he is just a repeat fumbler, clanger king. It's just painful to watch these players of 3-4 years experience serve up the same slop that they have game after game, year after year since they debuted. I would forgive a young player like Bennell, who mind you is proving to be more then capable of playing at the highest level, but not the players who after 4 years on our senior list still can't string two good games together. Or even one.

I thought our young players performed reasonably well yesterday which gave me hope for the future, but realistically there is a lot of culling to do before we can have a serious tilt at a flag. Thoughts?

At what point yesterday did you think Bate worked hard. He does not chase, follow up when he drops a mark or even look like marking a second effort. he looks very slow indeed.

  8. I have seen every game this year and Cameron Bruce has been sadly out of touch. his disposal has dropped away and he does not appear to be setting up the play and finishing off the way he used to. I am now starting to worry as to whether he will be able to recapture his spark that made him one of the better players in the comp. Thoughts?

I am sure Yze Magic will have some thoughts he would like to add to the discussion. Stand by for liftoff!!!

  9. I don't think there's a better example of how posters on this website over-hype young players unseen at senior level than Maric yesterday. I'm not bagging the kid - that double play where he took the ball from half back, passed, ran by for the second possession looked good - until his over-hit handpass missed Colin Sylvia by a couple of metres.

And he looked terrific running through half forward and sighting up the goals - until his eyes widened too much and he mis-kicked in his excitement.

    Give him another go, sure.

But let's wind back the BS about how Jack Watts is already in our best 22, and how an 18 year old kid, free of high school next year is going to instantaneously fix our forward line.

It is naiive to think he can do it for more than a handful of relatively low pressure games - which I hope he will do at times next year but when the heat is really on we can't expect first and second year kids to carry us.

    So simmer down folks.

And hope Bate can find some form because he is good overhead and he is a more reliable kick than Robbo. Bate found space several times yesterday but his leads went unheeded by his team mates who were intent on handball practice.

And hope Newton can learn to kick in front of crowds of more than 30 people and a couple of kelpies because he routinely takes several contested grabs and he will straighten us up.

And while I am on the subject; yes Robbo straightened us yesterday and beat Scarlett but he was still wasteful and showed a couple of trademark bits of selfishness. Over the long journey Robbo has been a terrific entertainer and second forward. He is not a long term number one forward prospect.

We have tolerated lousy kicking and worse from Robbo, and he still racked up 400 big ones. Congrats to him and more perserverence to Newton.

    I agree great post mate!!!!

  10. he's the new Colin Sylvia... Just needs Yze_Magic to jump off him, and stop weighing him down, and he'll be good to go...

Is Yze Magic on him as well now Cameron Bruce might live to fight another day now that the noose is loosened around his neck a little. However in all reality nobody takes YM seriously? Do they?

  12. Hi,

Just reading an attached thread about the proposed side in 2010 with two priority picks included. I wonder are people site impaired, can you not all hear? How many times has it been said and written in print media WE ARE IN A REBUILDING PHASE!!!!. To my knowledge rebuild entails working from a micro level up. Yes that is right start with bare foundations and move upwards.

Now people im not sure what your expectations are but I see some people writing in expectation about the Geelong game this Sunday " We want to win games dont worry about the draft pics". Well I hate to burst you bubble guys but we aint going to win on Sunday against Geelong. If you teeter along to the game hoping for a Melbourne win you are unrealistic and know very little about football. Would there be any harm in envisioning the side with Scully and Butcher in it? For the people who argue the clubs poor record over the years since its last premiership, and the lack of finals wins well truthfully that is just the spherical nature of football and poor records come with the territory.

In 1998 in Daniher's first year as coach we drafted Jeff White who was a number one pick. In fact we had a few high draft picks that year and sites were flooded with people loving the lime light and toasting the wins on the back of great performances from Jeff White A DRAFT PIC PEOPLE. When reality sets in your will realize that with the list we have atm if we dont get the draft pics we aint going anywhere really fast because the kids are all young and they are LEARNING on the job because we have no other choice. When Dean Bailey says we need to be competitive this is what he means and the young kids are our best chance of being competitive.

I am sick of this parochial hedonistic nature of some of our supporters who criticize everything the club is doing at atm " oh Sylvia is no good, Newton is no good". Then you go on about Bailey and how he coaches.

Get a grip people and think about how much you love your club and enjoy going to the football every week and not winging and whining.

  13. to beat geelong we must apply pressure and stop the likes of ling, selwood, ablett, and corey put pettard on selwood, moloney the endurance on ling, bartram can take ablett and bruce on corey keeping them to under 12 possesions until half time we can have a chance or flood the backline which seemed to work when collingwood played them in the prelim and worked and has never seen the strategy since then.

    Dont kid yourself mate

  14. I think a better question would have been how many of these players will still be with us in 2012 when we can challenge for a premiership again?

Of that question I would have said.

    * Note the reason there aren't to many players delisted as due to the fact we have a young side and for two drafts in a row GC and WS will have all the picks we will be more inclined to hold on to more players rather then delisting large numbers at a time.

    Hi,

Very good insight and I really hope it works out to be the case. Thanks for the great reply

  15. It's not a simple yes / no answer.

How can Cheney, Jetta, Bennell, Grimes etc etc be listed as yes?

We have seen hardly anything from these guys yet to be making calls like this.

well mate I know this much for sure as little as we have seen of them, what they have shown us is a hell of a lot better than anything Newton or Jamar have shown in their years on the list. This is foresight only but Dean bailey must have a plan. In terms of premierships I believe it is as simple s this, and that Bailey will be that ruthless when the time comes that he has both the robustness and depth in his list. Bate looks terribly slow ATM, more so than ever......... to be continued I guess

  16. Here are all the players on our list which of these could contribute to the winning of a premiership. Here is my opinion I wonder what others think.

    Bail N/A

    Bartram No

    Bate No

    Bell No

    Bennell Yes

    Blease N/A

    Bruce Yes

    Buckley No

    Cheney Yes

    Davey yes

    Dunn No

    Frawley Yes

    Garland Yes

    Green Yes

    Grimes Yes

    Jamar No

    Jetta Yes

    Johnson No

    Jones Yes

    Jurrah N/A

    Maric Yes

    Martin Yes

    McDonald No

    McLean Yes

    McNamara N/A

    Meesen No

    Miller Yes

    Moloney Yes

    Morton Yes

    Newton No

    Petterd Yes

    Rivers Yes

    Robertson No

    Strauss N/A

    Sylvia Yes

    Warnock Yes

    Watts N/a

    Wheatley No

    Whelan No

    Wonaeamirri Yes

    B Rivers Martin Cheney

    HB Warnock Garland Grimes

    C Mclean Sylvia Morton

    HF Jetta Miller Davey

    FF Petterd Watts Wonaeamirri

    Foll Moloney Jones

    Int Benell

Maybe this is what Dean has in mind, maybe its not but it seems more than a coincidence that he is suddenly moving toward youth. With the whisper that Mcnamara may play on the weekend is this the case? Seems there are only a few spaces to fill here for what might be a good team going forward.

    Thoughts please

  17. Agree Bell may be moved on to either Adelaide or Port Adelaide and Sylvia could be looked to be moved on to somewhere like Brisbane. Dunn may well be shipped off also. I think Bate will stay, think he's got a few more tickets then the other three.

I agree with the above assessments and the question that really comes to mind is the following. Which of these players could contribute to winning a premiership at their best.

  18. whoa..yourself good buddy.. anyone is entitled to post a view.. someone die and make you the thought police ??..probably not

Maybe the original post was too long for your liking..too detailed..whatever.. not all carry your view..

    vive le difference !! qui !! ;)

Thank you very much mate my thoughts exactly

  19. Hi fellow posters,

For those who found it humerous to critque my spelling and grammer I will have you know that I run my own psychology clinic, tutor students at a melbourbne university, and do my own study doctorate in philopsophy to add to the masters of psychology and master of teaching that I have aldready obtained. For your information this post was written in about 5 minuts, in my break between clients and with much haste. Furthermore it was adressed to a particular person with whom I had a conversation on this site yesterday evening.I do applogise for spelling Bethams name incorrectly but surely you have more to occupy yourself with than this turthfully get a life.

For theose who bagged this post, if it was so uninticing then why did you bother reply or giving your feedback to it in the first place. For those who actually took the time to read it, the post made sense, for others who lack the interlect and backbone to winge and complain outside the bounds of this site I pitty you I really do. I was asked for my thoughts on Newton by another poster and I gave them end of story.

Bloody hell people are narrow minded

  20. Hi,

Firstup appologies if I construed your invitation to join another site enscripted with the great mans name as a threat. It had been ardous day at work and I have been burning the candle at both ends of late. All thoughts on Micheal have to be as simplistic as possible for I feel that he is limited in both intellect and general resoning ability on the football field. By this I mean I have observed at select intervals, particulary during the previous two weeks, that unfortunatly he lacks what is commonly referred to as " Footy smarts".

We in the profession howeveer call this "apptitude".Micheals demenour and posture on the field have been the point of great fansination for me over a long period. Amid the furor during the Daniher era of his non inclusion in the team spreading across forums sites and through chats between supprters at the gound I held firm on my beliefs. These are that in my observation he seems to be very immature. There is a direct corraltion between the games that Micheal plays well in, and the games that Melbourne wins. This is determained a lot by the quality of supply going into the forward line. It has been reported quite visciforously within certain sectors of the club that Micheals attitude problems and not abating. This cements my assumptions of his body language and lack of effort on these occaions that he is in simple terms " A hugly overated intantile dummy spitter".

I hear you argue has he ever played well? my answer to that is that I think what Micheal thinks is playing well and what actually constitutes a satisfactory game at AFL level are two totally differnt paridigms. His inclination to adopt the spectacular in perfernce for the menial taks on the football field is obvious, not only to me, but also the supporter in the outer. However I think his feelings covertly are the driving force behind the Micheal Newton who plays at Casey and the Newton at AFL level. I think he was superior athelitcally to most at TAC cup level therefore his application at this level nees to be less to succeed that what it is currently in the AFL. He operated in a comfort zone at Sandringham, and now he is doing at Casey. His comfort zone is where he has to work at a minimal level for maximum output. For example run to the wing, take a screamer, get the crowd yelling and then starts the next passage of play.

However at AFL level his is what we psychologists call a "social loafer". A social loafer is someone who does not contribute to a group task when there is a common goals attainable at the end of it. By this I mean he only puts in for his own gain, rather than applying himself to the whole goals of the team. Truthfully I feel that rival AFL teams have done their homewrok on Micheal and I feel that when he is in the forward 50 they block his space to lead into and disallow the potential for him to fly. Now his ideals of what is perfect are construrued and he becomes angry. it is a little like taking a lolly away from a young child. If they cant have it, and have it easily, there is no piint having it at all. Somrtimes being in the limeloght is what people strive for.

A great philosopher Jeremy Bethan once said that people strive toward the pleasure principle. This is they strive for pleasure and only pleasure is the greatest attainable amout.Theortetically this says to others bugger you im working toward fullfilling my own needs in precedenc to yours. You may also notice that when he is stationary in the forwrd 50 some teams will have a player go to him, bumping into him, hastling him and saying a lot of not so nice phrases to him. I overheard some of it in the pocket on Sunday as a matter of fact. This cements my assumption that other teams feel the key to conquering him is to get inside his head and that they feel cognitivly he is a little fragile.

Unfortunatly as you may well know in life generally being fragile means being a little vulnerable in a some areas. If a psychologist can pinpoint those areas, and highlight them to an opposition coach then the job is half done with those of low intellect and emotiponal intelligance such as Micheal.

To sum up I know I will attact considerable critisism after other posters read this incrimentally, probably critiqing my spelling because they have nothing better to occupy themselves with. This is my opinion and I am entitled to it, and after all you asked for it. I find it liberating to have another person on this site who actually houses some active neaurotranimtter activity and isa able to think critcally in some capacity. So thankyou for your insight and request for my thoughts.

    Kind regards

    Danegerous Demon
