I like the idea of Caufield, my major concern is with Perts "2 campus" idea that he's mentioned a few times, i think the best clubs thrive on unity and when you have 2 facilities it's hard to see how that creates anything other than division

    Quite easy to understand.

As highlighted in his message, we will not be playing games at Caulfield.  So for the VFL, AFLW, VFLW sides we will still need a ground to play on = Casey.

Didn't Binners call for the rule that even if the ball brushes the post on the way through it's still a goal.

It would save a lot of time.

Yes...one has to think common sense, but no this is the AFL.  And since every goal is reviewed before the next bounce, why do a review on the spot and waste time?

Typical of the AFL. The goal umpires 'frustrated' by being mocked for the tsunami of reviews, had to lean on the AFL to admit it was an AFL policy.  Why couldn't they announce that upfront.

    Spot on.

And if goal umpires have to call for a review if the ball goes near the posts or over the line, then why have goal umpires at all?

  5. The Age also did graphics ( which I can't reproduce here) which just shows how far down the gurgler we are compared to other clubs and the years of inaction by the current Board.

  6. Just get a plastic ticket..

    1. Don’t have to deal with Ticketek. Either this round or all of the remaining games. They WILL stuff up again.

    2. Readers, apps, and phones are all dependent upon the electronics working. We all know they WILL fail at some point.

    3. Stop giving information to the AFL, Ticketek, or some bot ex China about where you are and whether you are going.

    4. Much easier to burn the plastic card than your phone…and cheaper, when you get fed up with team performance.

Wrong, Leighoak and Bentleigh Club were both purchased by the club long before Gutnick  became involved in the club.  Leighoak was purchased in 1994, renovated and opened by the club in 1995.  Bentleigh Club was purchased beginning of 1996.  Gutnick became involved after the failed merger at the end of 1996.

Bentleigh club opened 1997 after Joe became president in 1996.

What I saw in Sydney was the few times we tried to switch we then stopped thus allowing Sydney to move across to cover us. If you switch it has to be done swiftly with the next two or three in the chain. At worst hopefully you get a stoppage on the wing or HFwd line. At best you can cut back into the middle to enter the F50.

We broke down because we were slow in moving it and/or honouring the lead up the ground. Sydney on the other hand kept the ball moving once they switched.

Players like Jordon for us were masters at holding up the chain. He nearly always stopped and propped So much so that it must be to instruction. 'Don't kick to a one on one, wait till the cavalry arrive'

I think that is part of Simon's defence first mantra but its worn thin and is now too predictable.

Switching has to have an end result.  It used to because you could get an entry into the 50m arc rather than a kick down the line to contest.  It simply doesn't happen against good teams any more.

Kicking across the ground to a contest on the opposite wing, which we saw in Sydney, is pointless.  The result is the same as kicking down the line. It may move the zone on the MCG, but they don't have to run as far on the SCG.

The trend for the better teams is to switch left, then back again to move the zone.  And then do it again....The two or three kicks needed to get it to the opposite side, as per the traditional switch, is simply too slow for the way the winning teams play. We did it to Sydney, they did it to us.

When watching the game, don't look at the ball when a team tries to switch.  Look at the HBF for the opposition, and you will see if the switch is going anywhere long before the ball gets there, as the opposition will have it covered or not.

  9. 56 minutes ago, Earl Hood said:

And the few times we do switch from the full back line, the second and third overlap players aren’t there for it to succeed, instead the first receiver on half back stops and has to identify a target as the opposition floods back. We don’t seem to have a set play for it, where a number of players would know to just run to space as soon as they see the first move.

But that is what Sydney and other good teams do. They flood across the ground faster than the switch. The switch was effective 5 years ago. But the HBF’s and especially wingers have already blocked the path, before ANY team can kick the ball the 2 to 3 times to move it to the other side.

same same...and he missed a chance to give the club a home.

He had already tipped a couple of Million for the club, which was broke.  He got us the Bentleigh club and Leigoak which having been sold by the current administration are still are the only assets the club has after 160+ years.

To have tipped in further for the Olympic swimming pool site is a bit over the top as a further ask.  And there wasn't an oval next to it until Eddie kicked out Athletics Vic.

After finishing top 4 last 3 yrs and winning a flag why hasn’t the club been able to trade or getting a free agent power forward, our hybrid solution of turning defenders into forwards is coming to roost!

Because there were none available come free agent trading period.

Well to switch play effectively you need a couple of things

First is players who have good field kicking - we are terribly light on in this area

Second is players who are prepared to work hard to run to space even if they aren’t used - I lost count in the game against the Swans the number of times we had possession in the D50 only for our guys to look upfield and see zero movement - it really was quite amazing

I saw GWS last night and they work extremely hard to spread and create options and their skills in terms of kicking and handball to advantage seem way better than ours at least at this stage

The other thing needed to switch effectively is space.  That doesn’t exist on the SCG.  While there were kicks for both sides which were “not down the line” the switch becomes ineffective, since the opposition don’t have to run as far to fill the defensive space, unlike the MCG.

The GWS comparison is very valid, since it was played on a bigger ground, and the game becomes more open.

Are there any food outlets or toilet facilities at Gosch’s? Want to take the little guy to training and I just know he’ll want food and definitely need the bathroom. Also are some of the players available for a happy snap and autograph?

There is a pop us food place right next to the entrance to Richmond station on Swan street.

There is a toilet ( one of the old cast iron versions from the 1800's) at the NW corner of the playing fields, right on Swan st.

You really turned me on the bump issue.

I guess footy for me has always had an element of blood lust about it.

I started following in the dirty days of the 70s so I've seen a bit of biffo.

But lately and hopefully older and wiser.... ( my young 19  yo son plays basketball) ..I would hate to see him in trouble.

And since it's not my head on the  "chopping block" who am I to expect others to do so.

But when you call it out for what it is as brain trauma it really makes you think.

A dear family friend of ours in her early 20s who played aflw with a history of concussions can now no longer play. She has been devastated by this loss of livelihood and passion.

Will we miss the bump. Maybe . But footy will survive and will still be a wonderful sport to watch.

    Well called.

Good points Deever.....what we are used to doing and seeing is no longer acceptable, as we now know the damage concussions cause.

I was chatting to a fellow Demon supporter who was also a boxing coach.  I am no fan of that sport, but he pointed out the disparity of rules in boxing around KO/concussion, and that of the AFL.

KO with loss of consciousness for less than 1 minute = 90 days no sparring or fighting

    More than 1 minute = 180 days

2nd loss of consciousness after return from previous = 360 days

1 KO  no loss of consciousness=  30 days

2 KO no loss of consciousness = 90 days

3 KO no loss of consciousness = 360 days

For such a brutal "sport" they actually take proscribe more care than the AFL with its lousy 12 day respite.

We may not like it, because players won't be allowed to play, but better that than more Brayshaw, Barnes, Smith, Frawley situations....

C’mon, it’s not like the players carry the equipment. Our situation is fine.

And they have to share rooms, ice baths, physio facilities, gym equipment, team meeting rooms with Storm, Victory and Rebels.  And how do you think our Womens team fits into that arrangement?

You only have to go to Essendon to see what a proper facility is.  Even Collingwoods is not the best today but they are ligh years above what we have.

But do not say our situation is fine until you have seen what other have.
