  1. I agree with you but i think this problem must be addressed and not hought of as negative and swept under the carpet. If our club had a stronger Fabric TJ would have seen a flag. At present why would a young recruit want to play for melbourne. Like when Nathan Buckley spent a year at the bears (coz he had to) but was always heading to collingwood. That's what we have to get to. It's why Judd chose Carlton over us even though melbourne was his team as a kid. That killed me, i actually shed a tear at that press conference. Carlton those lousy stinking cheats will win a flag within 5 years at this rate-IT SHOULD BE US!!!

WYL I love your passion! Yeah it killed me too, Juddy going to Carrrlton, he was a Melbourne supporter and had the chance to pick us. He's the best footballer in my book after watching a few of his games this year. What a pity. And I hated that eerie game last year against Carltank, they had no intention of winning. Cheats. Cost us in draft picks, costing us again this year.

I hated Friday night too, like you there was no way I was cheering them off the ground. It's still hurting, deeply. I'm still slinking around at my work trying to avoid the Geelong supporters (got quite good at this over the years). But one thing I'll say, I think the culture is changing at MFC. I sensed on Friday night that for a 100+ point thrashing, our young players actually kept coming back, having a dip, some nice skills showed even in the last few minutes (glad I stayed, even tho I missed the opening of the opening ceremony).

Bailey strikes me as someone who won't accept our tradition of a soft culture. I hope the new young bunch get more influenced by him than by the older group. I worry about Bate and Dunn. For years we've been happy with easy wins, when was the last time we got ahead then ground a team right down? As well as skills and strength, I want to see us as ruthless as Geelong on Friday night.

  2. After watching this club play for over 50 years, I believe that this group of kids is as good as any I've seen, including the group Ray Jordan developed in the early to mid 80's.

Last night's game is the best 100 point loss I've seen - and I've seen plenty! Look at the worst players -especially Carroll and White. Skinny kids trying their hardest, being buffeted, pressured as never before, but always putting in. Mistakes being made galore did not stop them from trying again.

It was one of the best lessons they could have had. I have watched every Geelong game this year, because I like the way they play. Last night's was close to their best performance of the year - given the slippery conditions, and the sureness of their ball handling. I applaud them.

Almost everyone of our kids out there did 1 or 2 really good things, and some even more. PJ, given that big men don't reach their best until 25-27, will be a superstar. Buckley will be anything. Warnock will play well over 100 games. Maric was described to me by Robbie Hyde after his 1st game as 'the next Peter Daicos' - he was then 16. He kicked 4 goals in a losing Grand Final. If he hadn't been so nervous in front of goal, his game would have been perfect, given he's one of the youngest kids in the league. Martin made some awful errors, but did some terrific things as well. And so on. I applaud them.

Now they know what they have to become.

Write them off at your peril.

Good post astrodee, thanks it helps. I also liked what Buckley, Maric & Martin showed. And Valenti. Bate & Dunn needed to lift. Thanks too for your perspective on Geelong, I agree if they play like that through September they are unbeatable. It was no disgrace and we never stopped trying (a big cultural shift for MFC, imo).

Only thing I felt was we let the young players down by not selecting a forward target for them.

    Anyway, onwards & upwards!

  3. Haha Yeah no worries! i will be yelling tomorrow to stay warm i feel as much as barrack. Will plan to sit in the extreme back row

Where were you 'why you little'?? I stood behind the back row several times, asked a few codgers if they or theirs were from Demonland and made a goose of myself (most of them seemed not to have even heard of the internet.. haha!)

But it wasn't a great night for catching up, next time maybe.

You better tell me something distinctive about you, like what you'll be wearing or something...

It can never get worse than last Friday night. And we missed the start of the opening ceremony too... :(

  4. You are all clutching at straws. It was awful. It has taken me this long to even start to get over it. And it wasn't really our fault. Except for sending our young talent out to face Geelong without any forward targets.

Geelong are awesome; big, strong, skills, confidence. All the things we have got to build into young bodies.

Forget the Olympics and drugs, my theory is the Cats are into gene doping in a big way. They're making genetically modified footballers down at the Cattery. It fits the evidence anyway!

And what a little whinger Ablett is.

That's all I can say, it's still hurting...

    Gene doping and GM athletes

  5. Truth is White has never been a goal kicking follower at anytime during his career.

Tell that to the Bulldogs!! Haha... you are right, except for that one game towards the end of a couple of seasons ago, when he sunk the Bulldogs finals hopes with just a few moments to go. I was sitting right behind him, was certain he'd miss... and he snagged it from the boundary. I'll always remember that magic moment and the feeling walking away from that game :P

  6. Haha Yeah no worries! i will be yelling tomorrow to stay warm i feel as much as barrack. Will plan to sit in the extreme back row

I'll be looking out for a couple of you, 'why you little' and '45hotgod' for starters... I'll just wander along behind the "50 Year Members" section and shout out "WHY YOU LITTLE... " and watch them all jump

My wife suggested (she has a good idea sometimes :P ) that we should arrange to wear something distinctive (hardly helps saying I'm in my Demons scarf :D ) or somewhere to meet. I'll be in N47 or 48, 2nd tier MCC. Wearing a navy sports jacket & gold & green tie (going into Long Room for half time coffee). I'll come & stand behind the extreme back row at qtr time 'why you little'!

In my loungeroom in Seattle checking the scores on the net.

    Damn I miss the footy!

Enjoy the game guys, and I hope they put up a fight.

I know your feelings 'Bring-Back-Powell' (at least it's not 'bring back Grgic' ), I was in a plane over Asia when we beat the Lions. Boy that hurt, but hearing about the heroic dying minutes & Miller's mark reading Demonland in the lounge at Bangkok helped a bit.

I'll especially cheer and wave my scarf for you, every goal that Wona kicks.

Enjoy tonite, all of ya... GO DEES!

  7. HBT...I was about 6 rows in front of him, he was carrying on like a pork chop alright, silvertail's, Daniel Bell, Dean Bailey and Handball...vocal yes - supporter, questionable!

Yeah that's him, I'd forgotten about the 'handball', every time they got the ball he'd yell "more handball". Pork chop alright! Do you remember who you were sitting next to? We were maybe 4 or 5 rows in front of him, you must have been very close. Great spot. See you there tomorrow night??

    GO DEES!

  8. The INFIGHTING HAS COMMENCED......

2008 Is Pretty Much All Over thread:

    http://www.magpies.net/nick/bb/viewtopic.p...&highlight=

Boy I've just got back from clicking on that magpie site and i'm still laughing so loud I can't really type...

This from the guy who obviously composes their banners:

wow finally someone who thinks it was a ridiculous decision. I can't believe they have suspended them both for hole year, maybe just a week? on different weeks? would have been good enough, we are honestly stuffed without 2 of our major ball winners and a backline player ( heath ) that worries everyone, right now im that [censored] at the collingwood football club , i already ripped my pie sheets of my bed and smashed a few things... very very very very very angry. waste of fcn time this year now.

    Followed up by:

ALAN DIDAK is a legend.. stuff you all.

    Scary stuff :D

  9. OK I've got a couple of Demonlanders I'll be watching out for. 'why you little' with his Dad in the "50 Year Members":

No i was sitting in the back Row of the "50 Year Members" with my Dad!! I certainly kept them awake. They didnt disagree too much & it sure kept them awake!!

and that maniac down near the 50 metre arc:

Keep an eye out for me, the maniac in the dees Jacket about 5 metres to the right of our players race

Yeah at the bottom, near the 50 arc. Good spot to be, lots of people who go every week.

I'm second tier MCC. Right on the wing. Think it's N47 or something, either directly in front of Mr Bailey and co or between them and the MCC Committee pooh bahs (actually Jimmy was there last week, for 3 qtrs anyway). Depending on the crowd I could be directly under Bomber Thompson. He might like me to get him some food during the game, half a dozen pies and some coke or something...

I'll be waving my scarf wildly every heroic deed and hopefully sharing a few joyous moments in eye contact with DB right after Wonaeamirri's kicked a magic goal and got us all to our feet.

    Where is everyone else sitting?

  10. I agree, I'm also very surprised that he's come back to the club, i honestly didn't think it would happen.

Thanks Jarka, yep it will be another 'small miracle'. There's a great 'buzz' around the club just now, I'm feeling (hoping) it's real and not just another illusion. If that's the case, we're going to taste the ultimate victory and in our lifetimes. That will be the Big Miracle!! Cheers

  11. Or maybe he just believes that Collingwood should always (22 games) be the home side and therefore keep the gate receipts.

Yep in the collingwood cosmos, every game's a home game for them, every gate receipt is theirs (or else we're thieves), and every jumper clash is resolved by anyone but collingwood changing their jumper.

    Pricks!

  12. Sorry to burst your bubble but before Gutnick came into power Melbourne was not financially in trouble, we had no debt at all. Now the question of the state of our finances after he (and the people that he introduced to the board) left the club was totally different.

I have no problem with people idolising past presidents, just don't rewrite history in the process.

Well it would be good to get the history exactly right, I agree. I know that at the time of the proposed merger, MFC's balance sheet was in good shape. But my understanding was, this was not regarded as being susntainable long-term for the reasons 1) very low membership base, 2) generally weak on-field performance, 3) poor training facilities, and 4) no central adminisatration/training facility owned by the club.

In other words, money in the bank but nowhere near enough to fix the significant problems that the club had let fester. We either had to spend more than we had to start on the road to success in modern footy, or die (merge) with a healthy bank balance.

Why else would someone like Gutnick put up to $2M of his own money into a club, if it had plenty of funds for what money is for - spending on what is necessary (for football success in this case)?

I also am aware of the unsettled period that followed, especially the tensions during Joe's tenure. Let's just say that there are two sides to every story, now is the time to forget the rights and wrongs of back then and all work together 'going forward' (today's buzz word) so that history will be glowing when it's written about the era that began yesterday!

    GO DEES!

  13. I never thought I'd see the day when Melbourne supporters didn't want to offend the Pies.

    Ivor

    You missed the irony:

After all, MFC is considerably more successful than Collingwood in the past 50 years. They need our sympathy if anything.

Yep it was a cheap shot by Garry, let's show more class and support our collingwood colleagues in their misery...

  14. I detest Collingwood as much as the next human being, but what Garry said was neither smart nor classy. There's no need to kick clubs while they're down. We're not even 'up' yet. All his comments achieved were to decrease the chances of Collingwood and other AFL supporters putting their hands into their pockets to support Melbourne in a time of financial need.

Actually I agree with you pantaloons, I hate it when other supporters kick us when we're down. After all, MFC is considerably more successful than Collingwood in the past 50 years. They need our sympathy if anything.

Yep it was a cheap shot by Garry, let's show more class and support our collingwood colleagues in their misery...

  15. Magpie winge

Oh my god, this week just gets better and better!

    Sure does! Pleasant lot...

[censored] Lyon and the Melbourne Toffs. They will go bust very soon and its a crying shame that they will play this Friday to mark the 150th year. I know these were the first 2 teams to play a match but the thing is, they should just give this game to us because they owe us lol!!!

(lovely pic that goes with it btw, check out the two totally handsome dudes... )

  16. Haha cos the umpiring was awesome in the Brisbane game....

    Exactly!

Keep an eye out for me, the maniac in the dees Jacket about 5 metres to the right of our players race

Which level? (so you're in the pocket??)

  17. So how can we prevent pathetic umpiring ruining the game against the cats on Friday night at the 'G? (boy i'm looking forward to it, don't believe for one minute that our young team will be disgraced).

The only accountability is the crowd. We just gotta get there, thousands of us and with heaps of voice. I'm not talking about genuine human mistakes (which go both ways). If the umpires start treating us unfair again, WE ARE THEIR ACCOUNTABILITY! (which is why i'm hoping Mr Loudmouth in the second tier of the MCC turns up - the only reason actually).

    GO DEES!!

  18. People should apppreciate in the context of the amount collected on the evening, how magnificent the contribution of Joe Gutnick was at the end of 1996 when he alone tipped in $2m on the way to contributing a total of nearly $3m. It is believed he is back in the fold (he was unavailable last, will make a contribution to the debt demolition and will be seen again at the club very soon.

Jimmy was keen to impress on all at the function that his board wanted to include all supporters and, judging by the mood of the evening, they are well on their way.

    Uncle Joe Gutnick

I remember the dark day, Melbourne was close to going down the (financial) gurgler not to mention being swallowed in a merger with the Tassie Hawks. I was taking a phone call at work in the foyer and a mate walked past & said there's some millionaire mining magnate who's just rescued your club with a $2M donation. I had never heard of Uncle Joe and thought he was pulling my leg. 2 mill, it couldn't be true. But it was, a miracle. We had a saviour from the depths of despair.

Later I was at the rally at Dallas Brooks Hall. Joe is a great Demon, he put his hand up when it counted. One day I want to shake his hand (I wore a red and blue yarmulke to the 2000 grand final, in appreciation of Joe and because he couldn't be there on account of his Jewish faith).

    Great work Jimmy, being inclusive!

PS has someone merged two threads here??

  19. hey that's my spot, second tier MCC. Right on the wing. It's great theatre, like those old Friday night screenings of the Blues Brothers, same crowd each week, same roles to play...

Me, I wave my scarf every heroic deed (usually beheading the opposition supporters in front). I sit right in front of DB and the coaching crew, I know they get a buzz from our passion. Bailey is usually deadpan but just occasionally in a moment of high emotion, he will make eye contact and raise his eyebrows in a sign to heaven that he like me can't believe the clanger we've just witnessed.

Love it, including our trumpeter (Hugh?) on the same level...

  20. Ime Glad so many others thought we were Crucified last saturday. i was in the mcc reserve and was going off my head!! Couldn't help it. Apaplectic is the word!!!!

Apoplectic. Good word. Were you anywhere near the loudmouth who kept calling them silvertails and hated Daniel Bell with a vengeance? Loudest Demons supporter I've heard, ever.

  21. 170 people in attendence plus 25 people who couldn't make it, making it 195 x $6,000.

Total amount pledged to be announced in a minute.

    You with ASIO or something??

Gee glad I wasn't there, they would have skun me out...

    Great intelligence, Haydo. Thx.
