  1. i swear it adds more than that. congestion as a result of road works is a lot worse. once the new lane is finished it will be a lot better. but really, it should have been done when they built the thing.

You are correct if it is congested. However, my comment was in relation to uncongested, free-flowing times (which really is most of the time).

  2. I agree with Bezelbub's comments.

In addition, Casey is not that far from the city. Once the upgrade works on the Monash are completed, it will take around 35 minutes to get from the MCG to Casey Fields.

If you're in Sydney and don't know what the upgrade works are, an extra lane is being added in each direction from the city of Endeavour Hills. The entire length currently has an 80kph speed limit, which over 40km adds 6 minutes to the trip.

  3. G'day casey scorp

How did you find this out? If I can ask?

It was in the local paper yesterday.

    G'day casey scorp

Does that mean its a "green light" for the MFC to have a training base at Casey Fields and arrange an alignment with the Casey Scorpions VFL side?

If this is true this is fantastic news and means its full steam ahead for both the Demons and the Scorpions down at Casey Fields!

The paper said that the defeat of the rescission motion means work can now proceed with finalising the contract details.

Hopefully it will soon be full speed ahead.

Don't know about an alignment. That wouldn't involve the Council I don't think, and there's plenty of aligments (in fact all I think) where the AFL and VFL teams occupy different sites. So the alignment shouldn't necessarily be related to the Council decision.

  4. Are we not still waiting for the council to give us the final green light to Casey. Isn't there a recission order on the last proposal. I think it's going to a final vote in November. Can't have the club announce something that's not a done deal.
The rescission motion was defeated last week, so the original decision stands.
  5. Meanwhile, Schwab's predecessor at Melbourne, Paul McNamee, has been appointed interim CEO of the Southern Cross FC consortium, which is bidding for the second Melbourne franchise in the A-League.

The Southern Cross FC consortium has had an interesting evolution. It's initial bid to FFA was to be cased at Casey Fields. Although initially fronted by a former director of South Melbourne Hellas, the bid was separate from SM Hellas (which had wanted to make its own bid, but never got it off the ground). It seems that SM Hellas has somehow got into the consortium, and has redirected its base from Casey Fields to the Bob Jane Stadium.

This is probably anathema to FFA which wants no ethnic associations with its A-league teams and also supports a presence at Casey.

  6. SEN had an interview with Schwab earlier this evening.

    On his 'u-turn' -

    ........

IIRC, Schwab said that he hadn't really spoken to CC about the job, as he had pulled out of the process earlier on, before calling him today to let him know he was interested.

Seems a very fast-tracked process (if Rogue has recalled correctly)!

  7. From today's media conference following Cameron Schwab's appointment:

"Melbourne's a unique footy club in that it grew out of this ground [the MCG] and not out of a suburb, so the solution for this club will be a unique one as well," Schwab said, adding that the MCG "must be at the heart of Melbourne's future", while acknowledging the "terrific opportunity" Casey Fields also represents as a training base.

Still no official announcement by the Club about Casey Fields; maybe awaiting Cameron Schwab commencing duties in October. ;)

  8. Just got to check out the recording. The ground looked in really good nick on tv (it is in real life as well). Thye match was a pretty high standard, with the Scorps going down by 1 point to Coburg. The Scorps gave them 5 goals headstart in the 2nd quarter, but came back well....hit the front by a couple of points and then squandered chances increasing the lead by points to 5 points, only to see the ball go down the other end and Coburg get a goal.

At half time the Mayor, Janet Halsall, did a boundary line interview and said:

    • the City of Casey is looking forward to MFC coming out to Casey by about November this year

    • they’ll have pre-season and a regular weekly training spot

    • the Council is also looking forward to the community benefit program involving MFC with junior and senior footy clubs, primary schools and local businesses

    • the facilities involve an extended gymnasium, and office and admin facilities for MFC

    • the project was worth $2.1 million with the Council putting in $1.2 million

    • Casey is the fastest growing municipality in Victoria, with 235,000 people and 38,000 school aged kids (of which many are keen on football).

Ross Booth finished up by saying that there is an additional $600,000 for terracing on the outer side of the ground.

Seemed very positive, and the Council (community) obviously looking forward to MFC's arrival.

Good to see the Mayor at the football supporting the local VFL team.

  9. So how does someone know? Is a board member going to come into Jimmy office "Hey Jimmy, how are we progressing with Fox?"

Jimmy's going to say "Hold on i'm trying to call him now. Damn, he didn't answer again. That's the 6th time i've called him today, but he won't answer..."

"[censored] Jimmy, steady on it's only 11am." Phone Rings

"Hope that's Stuart calling me back." Answer's phone. "Cooky! What can i do for you? Sorry? Yes, i might have called a few times, but... Yes Brian, no Brian, yes Brian. Ok, thanks for the call."

    "What did he want?"

"Told me to back off and Fox will get back to me when he's good and ready. But I only called a few of times."

    "Well...."

"Do you think he'll still want the job?"

"Ahh, Sure Jimmy, sure he will."

    Or more likely:

"Pete" in talking to Stuart Fox in his office.

    Ring Ring. "GFC. Fox speaking"

    ...........

"No sorry, Jim. I've told you before - I'm staying here at the Cats. I do appreciate your interest, but please don't call me about it again as I will not be changing my mind."

    ..........

No, Jim, I really have decided to stay here. Thanks again.

Pete - Was that Jim Stynes again?

SF - You wouldn't believe how many times he's rung me - iot'd have to be 5 or 6 times. I've told him the same thing , but he just keeps ringing. I think I'll ask Cooky get Frank to have a word with him and see if he can stop him ringing me.

And then Pete tells a few others and it goes from there.

  10. There was a day a week or so back when Stynes rang Fox 5 times in a single day. It got so bad that Fox complained to Frank Costa who had to have a word with Jimma.

Sort of sad when you think about it.

More than sad - it displays a level of anxiousness which telegraphs to a potential target that you are desperate. Not good from a negotiating position, nor for the image of the organisation.

  11. That is indeed more plausible than he feels any sense of obligation. I have no issue with him hearing MFC out. I just did not think anything had changed since he rejected them and it hasnt.

"Obligation" may have been the wrong word, but pressure/flattery (whatever you like) sometimes people take jobs for the wrong reason. Nevertheless I think we agree that he made a decision 2 weeks ago, he's simply stuck to it and he's entitled to do so.

MFC's attempts at appointing a CEO are akin to St Kilda's botchced efforts at developing a new admin/training facility - shoddy strategy, poor decision making and in the public arena all the way through.

  12. If he has done his due diligence properly the first time then he knows where MFC is at. should know what he wants in a role, identified the issues and moved on. And you are spot on when you say "the motivation and reasons for the second decision might not be as powerful as the first decision".

His first decision should rightly be for himself based on making a full and professional assessment and he had made it and your assessment that he would feel "obligated" by some other issues is puzzling.

Its academic now given he is out of the race.

He made his decision two weeks ago, and advised MFC.

It's not Fox's fault that MFC came back and pestered him again after he had considered their proposal and rejected it. He wasn't "back in the race" again.

wow dropping out for a second time!!!

    Must be frustrating stynes!

He didn't "drop out" again - he wasn't there!

Fox is being unfairly maligned for reaffirming to MFC that the answer really was no the first time you asked me!

  13. It will be interesting to see whether Caro is on the money here.

Two weeks ago, after much anguished thought, Fox decided he would stay at Geelong.

A lot can change of course, and influence brought to bear. I doubt that he would be considering re-entering the race with multiple others (and risk being overlooked again), but I guess if it's been offered to him then he would consider it.

    We'll find out soon enough.

Just bear in mind, though, the comment of Key Deefender:

You wouldn't want him to take the job because he feels obligated to as a result of entreaties from MFC, AFL, MCC et al, if in fact he has genuinely decided to stay at GFC.

He would be a fool and a lightweight if he were to think like that and it would raise core questions about his professional judgement.

    He’s obviously not a fool.

Aware of what he went through a couple of weeks ago, and the decision that he eventually came to, I’m not surprised by this outcome.

My earlier comment was that if another club continues to knock on your door after you’ve told them you’re staying where you are, and eventually they convince you to come over, the motivation and reasons for the second decision might not be as powerful as the first decision. Money isn’t everything.

  15. Actually the comment I made about 10-15,000 is probably an under-estimate. There were over 10,000 people at a NAB Challenge match between Essendon and Hawthorn in 2007, and there was plenty of spare capacity over on the outer side of the ground. A crowd capacity of around 20,000 is probably more accurate.

This year the following MCG Melb home game crowds have occured:

    v North Melb - 21,220

    v Freo - 19,423

    v Bris - 23,278

Casey Fields may have struggled with the Brisbane crowd, but could have taken the Freo and NM crowds. Add in Port Adelaide, Western Sydney, Adelaide and the Gold Coast and you have a number of matches to choose from.

    And yesterday - 17,958 v West Coast.

The likelihood is that there will be around 4 home matches v low-drawing interstate teams. Select from WC, Freo, PA, Adelaide, Western Sydney and GC17.

Brisbane has Fitzroy supporters, so leave Brisbane out of the mix.

Maybe 2 of the 4 low-drawing interstate matches could be played at Casey Fields without too much infrastructure upgrade.

  16. When Geelong won the VFL, they didn't win in the seniors that year. even though it wasn't an alignment.

Yes they did. In 2007, Geelong won:

    • the AFL premiership
    • the VFL premiership
    • the Brownlow Medal
    • the Liston Trophy

All of the stars came into alignment for Geelong last year.

This year they are still dominating the AFL, but their VFL team is a shadow of its former self (made up of a lot of different supplementary VFL players to last year).

That is a case where the interests of the AFL team absolutely dominate the interests of the VFL team. They will recruit supplementary players to fill remaining requirements after they have determined what their VFL playing senior list players need to do during the year.

Aligned teams cannot, and never will, work that way because the VFL team wants to win a premiership - that is its principal objective.

It's not a competition between the AFL and VFL aligned teams to see who can "win" out of the alignment - it needs to be a partnership which gives the optimum outcome for both.
