  1. They also interviewed Dean Bailey in the coach's box DURING the game on several occasions. Great of Dean to be willing to do it. But, really gotta question the point of it. The coach isn't going to say anything meaningful about his gameplan or anything, so it's really just another meaningless sound bite, and it diverts the coach's attention away from the job at hand.

To me, it's just a pointless exercise that the TV powers-at-be seem to think will add to the interest of their rivetting presentation of the game.

I'm not a fan of it!

  2. More evidence that Beamer is a natural born leader. Should be captain next year for sure!!!!!

Couldn't agree more, Redleg! Beamer is living his dream -- playing for the club he loved as a kid! And, he's doing it with real, genuine passion -- both on and off the field! I am just so thrilled for him.

Last Saturday he was absolutely spent at the end of the match. He gave absolutely everything in his desire to get the team across the line. With cramp in both legs, his final disposal of the match had to be a handball off to a team-mate. He could then only watch and hope, but alass, not to be...

Next Captain? Really think he's hard to go past.

    Go Beamer! Go Dees!

  3. My suspicion is that Brad Green is injured, and that explains his kicking yesterday. It's not the fact that he missed 4 shots but the way he missed them. I think it was in 2008 that he had a problem with his left foot or heel, which clearly affected his kicking. He began kicking 'up-and-unders' without his usual penetration. His kicking for goal yesterday reminded me of the way he kicked when he had this problem. If this is the case it may explain why he was running so close to the man on the mark at distances which would normally be no problem for him, i.e he was concerned about it.

Compare his kicking from earlier games this year - even where he has missed he hasn't had any trouble kicking it 50+ until yesterday (that bomb against the Brisbane Lions was from inside the square as I remember it)

I kinda wonder the same thing. Just wasn't like Brad to miss every shot...

  4. You are an inspiration Jim!!

My mother has been battling two brain tumors since November...we are all great Melbourne supporters and a positive for my entire family has been the strength gained from Jim and watching how he continues to fight and live his life as well as the turning fortunes of our great club.

It is almost part of the healing process for my mum going to the games this last year or so as it feels like she is part of something much bigger and it helps her to fight.

So thanks Jim and keep fighting!!

DJ 16, my heart goes out to you and your Mum. Really hope she pulls through okay.

Cancer has claimed too many of my family, friends and acquaintances. Just so hope your Mum & Jimmy can both beat it.

  5. Was the hero in our round 15 2001 game against Carlton at Optus, with 2 goals. Had a soft spot for him even though he was a pretty ordinary player.

Him and Godfrey were our most maligned players in the 2002-2006 era.

Seems to me that Williams and Scott Thompson were two players who were always on the fringe. Threatening to be something special, but for the most part didn't take the next step for the longest time. Regreattably, Luke never progressed, while Scott Thompson suddenly burst on to the scene, played a handful of excellent games for us, got injured, and then headed to Adelaide.

So, we ended up getting pretty much nothing out of either of them.

Guess that'll aways be the story with a certain percentage of any list...

  6. Brett and his brother Glenn....

Yeah. I picked that up, too. To my knowledge, they weren't related. (But, loved 'em both! Glenn was another of a long list that wasa cruelled by injury just when he was hitting his straps, and we therefore missed seeing him complete a stellar career!)

But, nice to see Beamer's thoughts on the team he's always loved. And, nice to have the unique perspective of a present day player who also grew up loving the team.

    Well done, Beamer! You're special!

  7. I claim to have been at the 54 grand final as a young kid and am part of a small group of us who saw all the 50's as kids and how we regularly love the remnice. Always gather in Percy's Pub (Percy Beames Bar) after the game to cool down, and freshen up, let the crowd disperse and then return home to watch the replay with a less emotional analysis and confirm how wrong the umps were.

Your name on here reminds me of that place where some of our players had to front up to after getting their numbers in the umpires' books -- Harrison House! LOL

  8. I'm so young I've heard of virtually none of these players. I feel like I missed a lot.

My childhood memories of the MFC revolve around names such as Hopgood, Seecamp, Tingay, Ingerson, Beams, Lovett, you know, basically our 90s team.

Don't worry, Titan. Your glory days are just ahead...!

  9. I was upset too Barrie, but then I realised I was too early for the prof having retired in 1955. I made the Demons team of the Century brought out by the Age but missed out on the MFC Official team. You and Geoff Tunbridge were great exponents of Half forward flank play. ( Often known as the graveyard of football).

Wow! Bobby, you must be the Ancient of Days on this site! Well done!

  10. Johnnie Townsend is worth mentioning. He was just beginning to emerge as a elite rover when knees cut his career short.

And, don't forget Ken Emselle. If my memory serves me correctly, it seems there was a time when either Townsend or Emselle were injured. One would come back from a long injury, only for the other one to be struck down. We rarely seemed to get them both on the park at the same time. But, both were very handy rovers.

  11. No offence Vagg, but Geoff Tunbridge (Barrie's predecessor on the HFF) more than had his measure.

And here I was thinking I was about the oldest poster on here! This thread has definitely flushed out all the old farts! LOL

Mate, can I claim to be too young to remember Geoff Tunbridge? (Well, that's my excuse for sticking with Bazza, anyway!)

  12. My favourite memory of B. Vagg was in 1968. We were playing Hawthorn at the MCG. It was unbelievably wet so I sat up the top of the southern stand directly behind the punt road goal. We were behind all day including about 5 goals in arrears at 3 quarter time. We started catching up during the final quarter. With less than 10 seconds to go, B. Vagg picked the ball up on the half forward line, about 35 metres out. He turned around and kicked it on his left foot. As the ball sailed towards the punt road goal, the siren sounded. Straight through the centre! The Demons won by 4 points.

    Gold!! That's my man!

    Thanks, Prof!

  13. Ah, yes, what memories. Some of my best memories are sitting in front of the old radiogram as a kid, listening to the exploits of Greg Parke pulling down screamer after screamer, and pumping the ball down Ross Dillon's throat! Great stuff!!

But, I am truly gutted that no-one has mentioned my namesake! Good old Barrie Vagg was a rather talented Half Forward Flanker who was one of my real favourites!

    Nostalgia! Gotta love it!

Now, on to the next battle with the old enemy on Monday...!

    Go Dees!!

  14. I'm thrilled for the kid!

Is this the first nomination this year from a losing side? Seems them who make the decisions have pretty much always chosen the nominations from winning teams. So, makes this nomination that much more special.

Now, just need to get Watts, McKenzie and Strauss's names added to the list of nominations! (And, is Bail eligible? If so, him, too! That would make a new record of seven for the year!)

    Go Dees!!

  15. Yes, many fine memories of the Right Honourable Brian Dixon strutting his stuff for the MFC in our glory days! Well done, Brian! Well deserved!

Now, bring on our next Glory Days!!

    Go Dees!

  16. The biggest blunder they made was the selection of VFL/AFL team of the century by putting Silvagni ahead of Jack Regan

Having no Collinwood player in that team is a joke (Regan)

You're kidding! Is that right? No Collingwood player in the Team of the Century??

    That's positively GOLD if true...!!

    Love it!!

And, back on subject, yes, let's get those deserving Melb names into the Hall of Fame, where they belong!

    Go Dees!!

  17. There is no rellavance between pick 11 and Brock McLean

On the contrary! Every relevance in the world. We got pick 11 (Gysberts) because McLean departed the MFC, and pick 11 was the payment.

Relevant. And, great work by the MFC...!
