Well the landscape is a bit different today. Streaming makes it viable to watch games on demand and spoiler free. Add to that the fact that most immigrants these days are from countries where they don't even know the AFL exist, so how do you convert those new Australians into footy fanatics?

You'd think that in a very competitive landscape (easy access to international Sports) the AFL would prefer to grow the size of their market? Not just keep it stagnant? Reality is that, within two generations, the AFL is at risk of drying out the well of fortune.

Whatever system we have today, too much power lays with the players and their agents. It feels like they hold the smaller clubs for ransom whenever they feel like going to a big club. Ditto for home sickness, moving back to their state of origin.

The reality is that our FA recruiting since the flag has been putrid, for one reason or the other. Unless McAdam can play 20 games next season and becomes an x-factor to get us into contention, it will feel just like many of the previous trades we did over the last 4 years.

If the AFL is not going to be serious about fair and open competition for all clubs, they might as well just fold half the teams and then create super teams that play against each other like a round robin style and the top 2 play the GF. Of course that would shrink the number of members and viewers but you can't have it both ways! Either fabricate a narrative WWE style or be fair Dinkum about being a professional sports league.
