Below are some of the better KPFs in the game today. Just players who were drafted in the last 6~ years, and the stat is goals kicked in their first four seasons (from debut).

We all want, and need, JVR to be taking a leap this year - but patience is required.

    Season # 1 2 3 4
    JVR 28
    M. King 22 38 52 28
    B. King 17 25 47 40
    McDonald 9 15 32
    Curnow 5 20 34 18
    McKay 3 21 26 21
    Daniher 3 28 34 43
    Naughton 2 32 15 47
    Larkey 0 26 14 42
    Allen 0 20 18 28
    Average 9 25 30 33

For reference, old mate Weideman kicked 3, 3, 10, 11....

Can we also add efficiency to this chart?

I am pretty sure JVR was above 70%, and few if any out in the full. Great set shot technique.

NGA rule changes costs us Mac Andrew and now possibly Kalani White? What a joke.

I think the bidding should be before the trade period. Not sure how it would work but allowing teams to trade out first and second rounders for 15 junk picks is ludicrous.

I thought Kalani was almost a certainty for us? We definitely need him as a replacement for Max.

Three years for (any) up and coming developing talent is plenty enough imv Diab.

Five is more than enough for any player but should only be reserved for the top line proven players.

In addition to the points in my earlier post you responded to, you have to leave some incentive in the bank for a player to keep performing.  Even the greats!

Well, I am sure this deal is not on big coin. The incentive is still there, for him to be able to renegotiate that deal down the road. Once he establishes himself as a top 5 fwd in the league, he can demand more money.

No wonder there are those who see the AFL as a totally corrupt body, like the IOC, FIFA etc.

They seem to be able to find special circumstances to suit their agenda at will

As others have said, I love footy and the MFC but I have nothing but contempt for the administrative body known as  the AFL.

I used to watch maybe 4 or 5 games a weekend but really now only watch MFC, with occasional looks at Kayo minis of other games

The world of pro sports is rotting all around the world. The same [censored] happens in other places like UEFA, NFL, NBA.

It is becoming a show biz first rather than sports. As many have said here, only the love for club makes us remain here.

I don’t know why anyone is surprised at this. The AFL is only in the business of making money. They spend their time and effort creating a facade of equity and fairness - but neither of those things are actually in their best interest.

Cameron doesn’t play = less money. Therefore Cameron plays. Ditto Maynard. Ditto Cripps.

So what's different for Kozzy? Surely he is as popular as Cameron.

There's something beyond money, the AFL has their favourite children (Sydney, Geelong et al.)

Very happy to hear of this signing.

Hopefully he has plenty of upside going forward as AFL is a very hard gig to crack into, let alone stay and play regular games.

However at the end of the day it's a performance based sport and, like any other player, Roo will need to hit some marks set to him by the coaches / FD over the months/years to retain his spot.

As to the length of contract, well that is the club's prerogative but for mine i cannot see how anyone but the very cream of the crop gets signed on for more than two or three years at a time.

5 years is about two to three years too many for about 80% of the talent pool of 40 odd listed players at all clubs imho.

In addition, regardless of performance aspects and/or development of prospective talent, you just don't know what's around the corner as a player.

Anything can and sometimes will go wrong as we've witnessed with so many players over the years.  Gus a great example.  Murphy from the Pies another.  Hannebery on the Saints list for four years without playing for the most part of those.

If we were to trawl through the history books there'd be a list as long as our arms and legs for players who ended up out of the game with years of potential great games left in them, for whatever reason.

Good luck to Roo and here's hoping he ends up being a very very good (or better) KF for us at some point.

I think it's good that the club shows loyalty to a player. We have been complaining about the Jacksons and Pettys, so let's reward those who want to stick around.

Lack of height plays against him, not a ruckman or a key forward.

I would like to see him up the ground, half forward type.

He is 194 cm, isn't he? I bet he can still grow a couple more cm, be 196 or 197 in the end. Not too bad in my view.

I always back the club but is there any excuse for not resting BB over the past 3 games?

    hard to understand

it was clear to me he couldn’t perform off 5 day breaks

    any thoughts?

He shouldn't have played against Crows.

Btw, I think he shouldn't play interstate games.

Great news! Now is the time to get him coached correctly - further develop his potentials, provide him with enormous confidence and guile, to build a forward line around him in both potency and support.

We need to bring someone next year to replace BBB. Kid needs a mentor and support during games.

Perceived pressure and lack of game awareness. Both aspects that are probably linked to confidence.

We keep getting beaten the same way and Lions didn't do anything different last night to overcome this. Why?

How does Goodwin escape scrutiny here? He cannot put it down to effort and the playing group and has to take some accountability. Given our midfield performance of late, one has to ask the question as to whether we did the right thing in hiring Mini as well - he has not started well.

With a mere 12 hours of reflection, there are a few thoughts crossing my mind atm.

    1. The 4-1 start was a bit of a statistical anomaly. We were lucky to beat Port and boy did we look ordinary against Adelaide. Hawks and Doggies were the only games were we looked like a good team. Perhaps this game was a bit of reality check and we really are 6-12 team. Carlton and Geelong games will give us enough data to put this to bed, but right now the win/loss is flattering and our numbers tell a different story that will not be sustainable.

    2. Did the off-field drama and desire to prove a point mean we gave it our all in the first 5 rounds, leaving the team spent and helpless against Lions?

    3. Have we really adjusted our game plan? Our corridor usage (which we didnt see a lot of last night) was poor and easily shut down by Lions, who gave us the wings that lead us to boring predictable Melbourne.

    4. Where was our pressure? Lions are dismantled with intense pressure - cannot let them have their uncontested game. If me, a mere amateur at best in footy tactics can see this, how on earth does a professional outfit not see this and execute?

Like most, i'm a bit lost on Melbourne. I didn't have much hope coming into the season, got sucked in by 4 straight wins and again after last nights game am confused as to what awaits us for the remainder of the season. You can lose and still have hope, but that game was confidence shattering - still makes me feel sick to the stomach.

Definitely a roller coaster with this team.

Round 0 we were grim, then 4 wins got our hopes high. Now everything just came crashing down again.

I too want to question the perceived inability of the coaching staff to motivate and prepare the team, week in and week out, to perform to a competitive level.

Of course we can't win them all, but you just have to be competitive every single time you are out there on the field.

I don't know how Fritsch can be expected to play a good game when the few deliveries into our 50 are coming straight from the pie shop.

There was one awful play by Petracca, we get the turnover and quick connection then Petracca is out in space.

He then proceeds to stop to "lower the eyes" , no one is inside our fwd 50. 3 seconds later he kicks it high and long to no one. Turnover to the Lions.

Fritsch was screaming for the ball just outside of 50, granted he was on the opposite flank but Petracca never saw him.

But tbh, why didn't he decided to keep carrying the ball and then have a kick at goal from 45. He has enough space to do it and most of the Brisbane backs were running to their goal square. Mind blowing stuff 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

People calling Fritsch a front runner are seriously deluded.

He is in the top 5 for overall goals kicked in the last 5 season, playing  as a medium forward. He's kicked only a handful less goals than Jeremy Cameron has in 5 years for goodness sake.

He also kicked 6 on the biggest stage of all and would have comfortably won the Norm Smith if not for Trac.

If you are playing Melbourne, who is the one forward you put all your attention on? Fritsch.
Kosi of course, but in terms of who do you defend in the air? It's Fritsch.

For such an undersized forward playing as basically our number one target going inside 50, he is remarkably consistent. He needs help though.

Correct, I also don't understand why they were using JVR on Harris Andrews? It should've been BBB, probably wouldn't have made a huge difference but you can't ask your second year Fwd to go against their veteran key defender.

Because if Tom can mark the ball like that down forward he is still a great asset. Petty is a premiership CHB & at the moment looks like a fish out of water.

Tmac has the turning ability of a truck unfortunately. We already have BBB there too, it would be a disaster if them both are our KPF.

They also tell me that we don’t just give up. Would you rather lose by 60?
I am not suggesting the final score was a reflection of the true result, because it wasn’t. But better to give something than give up. Those were the Neeld days. I don’t ever want to see that again.

Why can't they start say in the third quarter? Boggles the mind that the pride of this team only comes out once we are 7 goals down.

Windsor? Rated 40th out of 46 players. Ten disposals. Don’t get me wrong, I love him, but let’s be realistic.

To be honest I didn't want to give more votes after my top 3, so take them with a grain of salt.

What a soft lazy effort this was, outnumbered at the contest all night, second to the ball all night, worst performance for years. Premiership contenders don't put on performances like this.

You're right, look at our 2018 or 2021.

More often than not these stinkers happen from time to time in Goodwin's tenure 🤔
