I haven't commented on anything post Friday night as I wanted to let the emotions die down.

But i have to agree. I was on board (and still am) with the stategy that won as a flag last season. And I liked how Goody backed in his players and the plan.

But from halfway through the season even us mug supporters could see that our offense was an issue. And the last 4 mins of the SF proved how wrong we were by not trying things.

How good did we look with Petty taking grabs and being an ariel threat? I didn't buy in to the lack of creativity until i saw that. We butchered this season there is no doubt. Goody and the boys need to have a look in the mirror, we have enough defenders (all be it not always fit), to expeirment with a Smith as a KPD and Petty as a CHF.

If we can't improve significantly in offensive conversion for season 2023 then dont' worry about turning up again.

Also we could use Turner in Petty's role and still use Petty forward and maybe Smith as a swingman

Reading this forum, I notice that a lot of posters think we have the AFL’s best list. I think that’s because we’re so familiar with our players.

    Here’s how I would group last Friday’s 23 on this year’s form:

Great season: Petracca, Oliver, May, Petty.

Good season: Viney, Langdon, Lever, Fritsch, Brayshaw, Gawn.

Average season: Pickett (occasionally good, but too often missing or undisciplined), Harmes, Hibberd.

Disappointing season: Brown, Melksham, Neal-Bullen, Spargo, Salem, Jackson, Rivers, Hunt, Sparrow, Smith (although often injured).

Not everyone will agree with me, of course. But as I see it, 10 of our last game’s 23 had disappointing seasons. I can’t imagine that would be the case for Geelong, Collingwood or the Swans.

It’s not surprising that we didn’t perform in the finals when we rely on so few. We have some top players, but hardly the AFL’s best list.

    I agree with your assessment

Weird has shown plenty the last couple of games as a ruck forward.

Be interested to see him played in that role for the pre season and into next. Just might be his future role at AFL level.

Couldn’t play him, Tmac and Brown in the same forward line but you could play him Tmac and JVR who has a lot more mobility and much better below his knees

Brown isn't the player he once was, only kicked one goal in 2 finals this year. He shouldn't be an automatic lock for AFL games. In fact no-one should other than Trac, Clarry & Gawn. We lost last night at the selection table. It was obvious that we wouldn't kick a winning score with the same players as last week. Still can't understand how we went into the last 2 weeks with only one tall in the forward half. We could've selected JVR instead of Melksham and still would've been better off. Gawn as ruck and Jacko as ruckrover. However Goody trusts his system and that failed us this year. His system relied on us being superfit and disciplined which we were not. May was very undisciplined last week and Kossie this week. Such a shame.

JVR is so cute. Spoke like a true first year player. Get him a girlfriend ASAP so he doesn’t contemplate doing a Jackson!

That's the ticket. We need him to have an emotional connection with Melbourne and a steady girlfriend who loves Melbourne is a must.

Wakefield has been awesome. So exciting. Has a bit of Fritta about him.

Mitch Brown is an amazing VFL player. I think we should delist him but Casey should sign him up. He looks like he can play 10 more years at this level.

I was thinking the same thing delist and sign him up as a Casey player with onfield coaching.

Agree Petty Tmac and  JVR should be out forward  talls with Weid replacing Jacko if he goes Another ruck a recruit.

Leave Brown out - doesn't kick goals. Needs to kick at least 2 a game otherwise isn't worth playing.

I had zero expectations of us winning the flag this year. We would have been thrashed by Jee-long next week. However I thought that reaching a Preliminary Final would have been an acceptable year.

The capitulations in both finals, particularly last night, was unacceptable. And Turner being the only debutant or the season. So yes, a waste of a season.

The only thing to hope for for the remainder of the season is to hope that neither the filth nor Geelong win. I think that the Swans are the only other team capable of winning the flag.

This year was wasted because we lost our structure. Too much faith in BBB who this year hasn't  delivered, as he couldn't take marks under pressure, didn't lead or if he did got ignored. T.oo often he'd be on the wing kicking it forward to a forward line without him in it. Fritsch shouldn't be our key forward, he is a 3rd tall  and a good one at that. We played with a resting ruck as a CHF for no  result for too long this season. No TMac or another tall at CHF. We are too predictable.  May kicking out to the left, bombing it to a pocket and not lowering the eyes and not dropping a short one in our forward 50. The only player who does is Spargo and they stupidly played him off a wing. Jackson is still developing and not yet a forward, think of him as a very tall ruck rover. I think it will be madness to help Collingwood with there salary cap problems and take Grundy when he isn't a ruck/forward and create a problem for us unless we prepared to change rucks off the interchange. Gawn is too unreliable a kick and we stuffed up the season because we just can't kick goals. I'm still flabbergasted that we don't have a bona fide forward and kicking coach. Our window is now. We will rue the day unless we fix our kicking issues, our predictability and our reluctance to make moves. I'd like to see Turner play Petty's role and Petty to play forward. He is our best swingman. I love how he plays the game. We must not play Melksham and Hibberd, they are not our future. Promote some young talent who have good habits and add a new dimension to the team. Goody is too loyal to his team and too stubborn to tinker with his game plan. He should've said to May months ago, stop kicking out to left every kick out etc.........be more disciplined (May and Kossie) and everyone lower your eyes when going into the forward 50.  We must spend the summer learning how to kick the ball under pressure and score goals not points!!!!!!! Last year was brilliant, but I want to be at the G like all Dees supporters to when we win it here and really if they had addressed these issues we could've, it's so disappointing!!!!!!

Those suggesting drafting Bell are either totally clueless or have never seen him play.

Re Bell, I have seen him play quite a bit so I must fit into the clueless group. I think he has shown steady improvement...if the improvement continues, which I expect, he may well have merit.

He won't cut at AFL level. He could be a poor man's Chris Woodman.

We trade out our future first round pick during the player trade period.  It has generally served us well.

But is it so wise to trade that early now with draft night trading?

According to reports, in recent years we have tried to trade up on draft night for Zac Butters, Max Holmes and maybe others.  Because our 1st future pick was gone earlier, in the player trade period we couldn't add any future picks to our draft night offer to climb the order to get them.

While we have mastered trading picks and moving up the order generally I'm not sure we have kept an eye on having flexibility draft night.

    So two questions:

    • Should we continue to trade out our future 1st?
    • Should we keep it and our powder dry for draft night?

I want 2 keep our first pick for 23 as next year is supposed to be a bumper crop

So after we wasted this year these are what I think we need to change.

Game plan. It’s crap and was worked out early this year but Goodwin refused to tweak.

Forward coach, not a bloody ruckman.

    Selection, actually reward Casey players.

Game day coaching, try things. FFS try things.

Major review of fitness staff, our last qtrs are only better than Nth and West coast is an absolute embarrassment. Not to be glossed over.

Kick outs, if we go left and long next year I’ll burn the mcg down.

Add a kicking coach and another KPF. I think Brown was goal less and only kicked one last week.

I don't disagree with that assessment, but Smith has played like 3 games for Casey as a forward this year. I doubt he is the answer if we are lacking a second tall.

If we desperately want a marking tall target up forward we will risk Tmac or punt on JVR. To me Smith is more of a medium forward, so would be a replacement for Fritta if he doesn't come up *heaven forbid*

Amazed that Melksham and ANB keep their spots. I don't know where the goals are going to come from - hope we find form, but seriously don't know how we kick a winning score especially if we play the pockets.

Grundy to MFC just defies logic. We already have an established ruck. Best in the league. Gawn isn’t a good forward and neither is Grundy. Both are just sole rucks. Why we would pay top dollar for an excess big man that we don’t need, whilst desperately needing to recruit a key forward - it’s beyond me. It’s actually just stupid. Reminds me of the Lakers recruiting Westbrook. Just a bad fit that would never work, and now they are stuck with a fat contract they cannot move. If rumored numbers are correct we’ll be paying 700k for a second ruck. Just plain bad list management.

    Reminds of Preuss

The fact Grundy doesn't want to go anywhere else means they accept mfc's offer otherwise they can hang onto him and miss out on a bunch of players they have lined up to come in ... they are stuck again

We have never really gotten the best out of trades with Collingwood. I reckon only Henry Coles and Peter Moore really excelled at Dees, maybe Flash Gordon. We have had a lot of failures eg Fabulous Phil Carmen and recent trades all busts - Hertier Lamumba, Dawes and Ben Kennedy.

Silly thread, though I was keen on Young at draft. Jackson is a demon now, Young is not.

If Jackson requests a trade to Freo, then a straight swap for Young would be a good result. Unlikely to happen though as why would he leave the Dockers on the rise after signing a 5 year extension.

Because of his family. We'd pay his contract.

  15. 14 hours ago, Lord Travis said:

If Jackson nominates Freo, can we demand a straight swap for Hayden Young?
I know he signed a long extension, but he’s a gun and looks like he’ll own a position on the AA HBF for years to come. Could become a mid too IMO.

I reckon we ask for that and if they say no ask for 3 first round picks, including one top 5 pick. If they say Young is a gun and we don't trade our young guns, then we say and Luke isn't.

May was sensational BUT he also killed our momentum because he can’t control his brain or his anger. As a leader he needs to be better.

100% agree - I think it's his ego. Franklin played him and the umpire.
