  1. Just been out for a long walk to get that out of my system. I always thought it would take some kind of perfect storm combo of bad kicking, umpiring or injuries for us to lose. We got that today but it wasn’t the umps or bad kicking. May’s injury added to the other premiership outs and a quality opponent took advantage. The biggest loss for me was TMac - not just because it brought in the insipid Weed but because he’d have provided cover in defence with May off and Petty hampered. You could see Freo lift and go for the kill. Their second half game plan worked far too easily though. Most disappointing for me was that when they tagged Clarry, Tracc wasn’t able to step up. I mean, when you tag one, the other is supposed to kill you or so I’ve been told.

    Anyway, we’ll rebound next week.

Oliver was clearly angered by that and proceeded to get the next two clearances and set up the goal that started our run. Do your worst umps!

Yeah, there was a shot of Clarrie with Tracc as they headed back to the centre. Reckon the conversation went something like:

”These umps are a fecking joke.”

”Yeah, don’t care what Goody says about saving it for September. Time to go through the gears.”

Also, the “umpire respect” rule should be renamed the Melbourne Rule cos we’re the only team it applies to.

  3. Unbelievably biased umpiring at the crucial moments in the last. Hawkins ffs. BT raising his voice in adulation of all things Geelong when they’re in possession. All sadly in accordance with their expectations and, dare I suggest, the script.

  4. Looking forward to watching this via the afl website. I grew up in ‘Willie’ in the sixties and Saturday afternoons were either spent with dad at the G watching Melbourne or with schoolmates following the Seagulls in the VFA. I was even part of their cheer squad at one point, complete with yellow and blue streamers. Character building - that biting cold wind off the sea and Willie always seeming to lose - but incredibly happy days when I look back.

Certainly should be easy for a strong Demons team tomorrow.

  5. On playing with this group:

”I’m really happy at the moment. It’s so good to be a part of a team like this…and the culture we have here and what we’re building. Yeah, it’s just a great place to be and we’re all enjoying our footy.”

    On his partnership with Max:

”…and to learn off a guy like Gawny so early in my career, I can’t ask for much more. So yeah, just loving playing with these guys at the moment.”

    On the contract situation:

“Yeah, who knows? Just focusing on footy right now, just leaving that stuff to the manager.”

    Nothing there imo.

Did Hannan lose it for the Dogs.

He had a shot. Would have put them up by 25 points

Handballed and it went nowhere... no score and then it happened

This was how I saw it as he went back to kick then coughed it up - a real ‘get out of jail free’ moment at a time they had all the momentum. The sling on Gawn wasn’t the ‘turning point’ as frequently suggested.

That said, I still think we’d have overrun them in the final quarter even if they had gone up by 25.

    bang

    bang. bang. bang.

Oh yes. Etched in my memory from R23, Prelim and GF:

“Gawn!!…..And Melbourne are minor premiers. Just like that. Try and script it. Try and write it. Try and believe it. It’s happened.”

“…Petracca again, full of confidence. Handball inside to Gawn…55 metres…Takes out the driver, sets sail for home.”

“Little one from Viney…Surely not another one…Handball to Oliver…Screaming through…Bang. Bang, bang, bang!”

    What an incredible few weeks.

Andy, good advertising, just ordered a slab for the weekend.... my neighbour is a beer journalist (still can't believe it's a job) and will give him a few leftovers....

Brilliant!  Hope you enjoy the beer.  Who's the beer journo?  My co-founder may know him.  Don't worry if you'd rather not say, of course.

I'll be just across the river from you.  I had thought of hosting a GF event for Demons fans but coverage would be via the BT Sport App and reliant on our often sketchy broadband feed so I daren't risk it.  Imagine the picture buffering just as Maxy is about to launch from 55m?!

As an alternative, and if it goes well from a Demons perspective, if you (or anyone else for that matter) fancies a post-GF slurp, head south across Tower Bridge to Southwark Brewing Company Tap Room (SE1 2EZ - Tube London Bridge) where I'm a co-owner and will certainly look after any Demons fans who stumble in.  Once across Tower Bridge, turn left at the third set of traffic lights - Druid Street - and we're the third railway arch on the right.  Yes we do brew "warm, flat Pom cask ales" ;-) but don't worry, we also have various craft keg beers and a Pilsner lager (and wines and spirits for those not into beer).  The wines might not match the quality of those I brought back from Gippsland a few years back but hey, when in Rome...

Anyway, you'd all be welcome - just ask for Andy.  Go Melbourne.

  10. Couldn’t watch because I’m on cricket tour in a quintessential Suffolk village where there’s only intermittent electricity, never mind wifi, but make no mistake, the web-fingered locals are now suitably educated in the storied history and present successes of the greatest team on God’s earth. All are now on board.

    Seriously, love you all.

  11. I’ve kept quiet on here since I joined - the nuances of the modern game are so far removed from what I grew up with in early 60’s Melbourne that I feel under-qualified  to comment in depth - but I truly believe our time has come. I fell in love with the Demons back then, I was there in ‘64 and I’ll be shouting at my tv with the rest of you here in England.  Finals start tomorrow and it’s our time folks.

I was just starting to barrack for the Dees at this time, and on that weekend my father - an Englishman who hated aussie rules but loved soccer - took me to Olympic Park to watch Everton defeat Australia 8-2..  If only the day before I could have gone to the G and seen the amazing demons play. It was mid-season a year later that  Saint recruits Cooper and Ditterich tore us apart, ending our reign.

Wow, this brings back memories (the 8-2 ‘soccer’ match that is). Like you my Dad didn’t ‘get’ Aussie Rules and he took me to see any UK touring side that made it to Melbourne, so I was there that day too.

We’d emigrated to Aus in ‘60 and, after a spell in Sydney, settled in Williamstown where I had my first taste of ‘footy’ in the school playground. Back then, you followed your local team so most of the kids were Footscray daft. One day, Dad’s workmates were on at him to choose a VFL team to and he was leaning towards South as they played in red & white like his beloved Sunderland back in England. One loudmouth though (Pies fan, no surprise there) was pestering him to follow them but, knowing that Sunderland’s bitter rival Newcastle played in black & white and were also the Magpies, he wasn’t interested.  In fact, he told me he chose the Dees that day simply because they were Collingwood’s big rival. Thus started my love affair with the club and within days I had a brand new MFC guernsey and was soon pestering Dad to take me to games.

Anyway, I was there in ‘64.  Aged 8.  Only a few memories but each as vivid as if it happened yesterday. The noise, the foul-mouthed Collingwood fans in front of us abusing the bald John Lord, Ray Gabelich lumbering from the left H-F flank right below me to all but break my heart, Froggy Crompton popping up with his goal, the final siren that I didn’t even hear such was the noise and my Dad ripping into the Pie fans as they skulked away.

Returned to England in the seventies but still follow them - tv coverage is pretty good over here and I’ve been back twice with two wins each time. Just desperate for one more flag before I drop off my perch...
