Mate, read what recently retired players, Lewis, Vince etc, or present assistant coaches say, notably that the players love playing for Goodwin

Not doubting you but love to see what was written, and especially the context.

I watched the suns and saints game. Jeez both clubs have some brilliant field kicks. More than us.

Yes, and you dont watch us to see a good game of footy skills. That is left for other teams and viewing. If it wasnt for the fact I get attached as soon as I see the red and blue jumpers....

An article by Mitch Robinson criticising the AA selectors by putting midfielders on the wings and not selecting any true 'wingmen'.not-selecting-genuine-wingmen

The real value of the article for me is It gives an amazing insight into the role of a wingmen and his importance in the 'modern' game.

Interestingly, he says: "...put any full-time on-baller on the wing, you cut their stats in half".

Reinventing Robinson as a wingman is a masterstroke by Fagan.

Well said. Thought we shoulda got this bloke when he left Carlton. Players such as Brayshaw get reputation built up on midfield minutes. Coaches would do well to view the midfield as wingers, ruckrovers, centreman and rovers. As a collective, midfield they escape proper scrutiny at times. Viney is a rover but plays like a ruck rover. No wonder we are unbalanced.

  4. Supporters of good teams usually have a keen sense of the ins and outs. With us it is very difficult at present.

    Here is my take

Jackson   Sit him down, dont worry about what he did right or wrong too much. Listen to him, hear his take on his game how he saw the pace of it and so on. Then say, well done, you have had a taste. Now go away and we are going to help you build yourself up and learn the game better. So that is him sorted for the year.

Weid      Sit him down as well, tell him he is being backed for the position. Lead to the ball and we will make sure the small forwards get to your feet isf the balls spills.

Mcdonald. Another sit down, man to man. How are you travelling Tom. Something is not right. Now if it is form we will back you but if it is body issues be straight with us.

Brown.  Not a great debut, full of nerves. He is a better player than Jackson at this stasge so he must come into calculations.

Viney/ Brayshaw   There is only a spot for one of those two against a lot of opposition.. sooner we acknowlege it the better.

    Enough for now.

I think we are forgetting how good lever was in the rounds leading up to his ACL.

May, Lever & Smith will take a few rounds to click I think..

Lever at his best is an absolute jet. I know the game was sloppy but we did manage to keep a team to 53 points, and nearly goaless for an entire half of footy. I would be more concerned about our forward line structure which needs another tall. We need to play weed, tmac and Jackson with tmac being the deepest forward.

Tell me more about him being an absolute jet. when exactly

How good was our start. Goody identified that starts were going to be so important this season. Trained for it and and the players implemented it. Thats great coaching. Ahead of the curve. And lets not forget our save the game last 2 minutes. Once again trained it and looked so much more prepared and organised than the opposition.

I do agree on the second point. Mind you it is nothing but Coaching play 101.  Gee I do it will Under 12 basketballers. Different sport, same principle.

A couple of posters have asked when it will be Goodwin's fault.

We have had a mini rebuild and not been able to train together due to Covid19.

Goodwin needs another year to be judged farely.

Mini re build, every club rebuilds every year. If you are talking about the inclusions this week that is a result of many factors but not a rebuild. Prepared to wager Jackson will be dropped so it would be a funny rebuild. A rebuild would have been reading the play last year and realising some favourite sons were at the end of great Melbourne careers.

We are both sitting here typing for a reason i guess 640.  When i think of Smith, yes forward seems better but i haven't seen alot so far to suggest he will be a regular starter in our best 22 as a forward.  Petty has impressed me a little more at times tbh.  Albeit the sample size is too small to lock him in as a genuine alternative either at this point.  We are presently bereft of a genuine KF marking/goaling talent aside from Tracc who is not really designed/designated to play a genuine KF role (full time anyway).

We do not have a lock for any key forward or back position.  Happy to be convinced otherwise but that is how I see it.

Ive always argued the importance of having 3 talls to have up forward. Always. Despite being knocked for it, i still think its crucial.

3 key forwards and not 2 and a utility.

One at best gets injured and the other loses form and hey how come we dont have a forward line.

By all means get a strong defence but lets kick goals to defend in the first place.

Given our recent lack of quality crumbers, the club has been shortsighted in not concentrating on this issue.

Agree. But you cannot change the views of some on here or the idiot football dept.

    Gold.

GC have overtaken us off the back of one game.  It's their first win in 17 matches but that constitutes overtaking us.

And he has little interest in the Roos and Giants because it doesn't fit the narrative.

    Love it.

And more, Gold Coast have more young talent than us, they have a world class training and admin facility, a good coach They have an AFL admin desperate for them to succeed and you dont think they have overtaken us.

When we lost Hogan we had TMac who had kicked 53 goals in 20 games and we had Weideman who had taken the finals by storm.

But we had OMac and Frost as our key defenders.

    Hindsight, hindsight, hindsight.

    Agree with this.

Smith and TMac just stood in the defensive 50 doing nothing. Presumably crossing their fingers that Lever would find a magic target on a wing full of Carlton players and they'd be OK.

Too often we see too many of our players failing to gut run when we need it. TMac is a senior player. Inexcusable. We see it from Jones, Brayshaw and Oliver as well. It's not good enough.

Well, gotta say you have no idea. Hogan was a star who made defenders nervous with his talent and allowed McDonald to play second fiddle.  If you think Lever is a major improvement on Frost or McDonald, well good for you. Could not care less.

Anyone unhappy with our game last night need to look at some other results this weekend.

Eagles spanked by last year's wooden spooners.

Giants beaten at home by a Roos team that traveled up on the same day.

Just have to take the wins no matter how we get them.

Rubbish, Eagles will not be down for long. Gold Coast have overtaken us and already have a second gamer who is better than any of our players bar, Gawn. No interest in Roos V Giants but Giants are still miles ahead of us.

Has the club or Gawn/Viney commented on this,  understand strange times but sure a lack of leadership of Viney to halt up the players and wait for Gawn! Didn’t see tommlison or Langdon in the middle either, were they included? These are the 1% strong clubs get right!

Someday, someone at the Club will say, enough and make a statement about leadership, respect and how good Clubs operate. Gawn needs to understand it may seem minor but this is screaming, stand up and put the kids in their place.

  14. MFC had more than a year to plan for the loss and replacement of a blue chip ,once in a generation forward in Hogan. And what do we do, quickly rush at a deal for a CHB we play at full back. That play has thrown our goal to goal line completely out of whack and something we are still playing with like deckchairs on the titanic.

After all pick swaps, it equated to a pick 10. I'd take Lever for 10. That was the whole point in 17', we needed proven defenders, not a speculative kid

I understand there was a pick 19 for the following year we gave up. As to pick 10, Lachie OBrien has stats equal to lever over the same period being paid a lot less.

  16. We showed guts rolling the dice with the inclusions and I said pre game I hope we get a block of games into them. Its time a critical eye was put over some of the regulars including their roles. Viney and Brayshaw have been given a golden run of time on the ball, an area where even a moderate football can get possessions. Harmes to the middle, Salem is rover size and maybe Sparrow comes into consideration in the medium turn. Viney, Brayshaw Oliver does not cut it anymore.

Both are better than a kid who played his only game since under 18’s today. Watching his selection is proof the FD ain’t that clever. Give the kid a chance to develop away from AFL seniors. What they did was put a sixth grader into Uni and wonder why he struggled.

And why did we recruit Brown and renew  The Weid’s contact last year if neither  is not good enough to play in the second game of the season. As you all know I am not a big fan but surely the Weid is better than a kid in his first game since under 18’s. Will any of us be left here at the end of 2022?

Interesting points and propably reflective of the lack of contributors here too, od.
