The way teams enter the forward line has changed, particularly this year.  And no doubt it is all about statistical outcomes.

We were training for "dump kicks" back in pre-season, and most of the teams at the top of the ladder now play the same way.

The chances of a "contested mark" in the forward line with zone defences is next to zero.  Clubs are depending on a deep kick into the forward line to create ground spillage and a 50:50 chance of getting the ball.  Even better with good crumbing forwards like Pickett, Papley etc.

Clubs will have done the numbers in terms of goal output.  The argument that we should "lower the eyes" is also now irrelevant because of zone defences.  It rarely happens to have a forward with space to lead into, and if they do it is almost always deep in a pocket = poor goal conversion.

For fans it isn't as spectacular as the big forward taking marks, it's just how the game is played in 2023.

I understand what your saying but we are way to predictable with ball in hand all over the ground, abit more dare and dash and we will find free options forward. We move the ball at snails pace.

Yeah old news DB. But im actually starting to think that it's the forwards that are having a major play on this.

The footy IQ of our front half is real average... & that's probably being polite.

I'm talking footy craft, & as a foward.

    Movement.

As a forward you have to dictate the play. You have to direct the kicker where to go. Doesn't give the kicker many other alternatives but to dump kick it long if our fowards are all running back towards goal saying kick it here.

Lloyd, Hawkins, Reiwoldt (Jack)... could go on & on.

    Start leading to the footy!

& just for a moment, imagine this team with the front half of the Daniher era...

The amount of times I've noticed the ball in our possession and no forwards moving to create options or even drag a defender to make space is unbelievable, surely that's not what the coach has asked. We end up kicking to out numbered forward hoping for a contested mark

I reckon while our approach serves as a template for beating the Pies most teams will struggle to execute this for an entire game. Aside from a couple of costly turnovers early and inaccuracy in front of goal our pressure and ball movement was outstanding across 4 quarters. Most teams might be able to do this for 2 quarters.

The first 15mins our pressure was non existent, the pies were finding free players everywhere and walking out of defence, while we struggled to get out of d50. Luckily this was turned on its head for the rest of the game

    Pickett. engine just running .

    He’s a A grader playing like a B grader. what’s happened to him?

Since he signed on thinks he has to take moy every time the ball comes in high... and constantly burns players in better positions when i50. Just need to go back to basics of a crumber,  stay front and centre and apply pressure

I’m concerned Essendon will finish top 4 with a weak as water fixture to come home with.

    Can someone allay my fears?

Most hated team, full of entitled supporters who find every excuse when they lose. was so nice having them quite for so long. Can't stand seeing them in the 8

    Huge game.

Pies have been the benchmark but look tired recently. With their outs, form and talk of flu/virus in the camp I think they are there for the taking.

We have outs of our own but we will show our premiership class today. We'll shut down their corridor game and squeeze the life of them.

I believe we will win this game. As an added bonus would love to see someone lay out Mason Cox (legally of course).

    Dees by 20 points

Watch for the big Yank to sink his knee into Max's back time and time again, the umpires turn a blind eye...

Do your grandkids come down to the front of the bay to borrow flags or banners or giant heads? Because they’re welcome to, so long as everything is returned by the end of the match.

LOL after the Freo match one of our members saw a little boy happily walking towards Jolimont station carrying a giant Fritta head. He obviously thought it was his forever and not just for the game. Bless.

Such a great thing you guys are doing, I will definitely bring my 2 boys (5, and 3) to sit in this area they will love it.

    T MAC IS TOTALLY COOKED

VAN ROOYEN NOT YET UP TO IT

    SPARGO SHOCKING

    NIBBLER TERRIBLE

    PICKET NEEDS A ROCKET

    MAX. ALMOST COOKED

And you want to make minimal changes???

    Nar SHHEESH

Out of that lot I'd drop Spargo, rather give Chandler more opportunity, Nibbler is doing his job imo. I do agree Tmac looks cooked probably give BB one more chance.

Pickett seems to be second guessing himself as are alot of our players not taking the first option and stopped playing on instinct.

  9. Friday night is a season defining game hope all us Dee's fans can get their to give the boys a boost. Win this and we'll take some confidence into KB and even if we loose against the pies but play well we can build for the second half of the season...

I think we can win 8 in a row from round 16 to 23 that will have us with 16 wins for the year

  10. Funny how you rate the list a top 5 and we are sitting 4th atm... only halfway through the season.

Our form does worry me we haven't played our best since Sydney game but if we get going after the bye and no more injuries to key players we can go all the way..

  11. Our midfield is unstoppable when the balls going our way, however we rely on too few we should have rotated Harmes JJ, Dunstan into the team more not just as subs give them a fair run, along with Gus Kossi, and Rivers there is enough variety, we just don't use it enough.

We will wear out our guns trying to stay in top 4 than have nothing left for finals

It's a big concern, isn't it? The side doesn't look settled across any line, least of all the forward line.

Glass half full, we are blooding alot of players early in the season... which should hold us in good shape once the business end of the season comes around, we are getting the points on the board without burning out our best 25 players.

We have probably improved the list slightly .However our issue last year was the forward line especially the 2 key forward positions and that remains unsolved .The only clear change is Schace for Weideman which is underwhelming .A lot of pressure is now unfairly on JVR but if he doesnt come on it is difficult to see a premiership in 2023.

I think its more to do with delivery i50, if we tweak the game plan to hit up some targets and get decent shots on goal, we will put most opposition away by 3/4 time.. we were 2nd on the ladder and won the flag with the same forward line, so adding JVR and Shane can't hurt. We are definitely a chance of top 4 again

Is this the same Josh Bruce that kicked 48 goals in 20 games in 2021, including bags of 10 and 5?

Compare that to everyone’s beloved Ben Brown who kicked 30 in 19 games this year.

Think of what a player can do rather than what they can’t.

Delivery inside 50 is the main thing with these types of forward

Geelong sells the active lifestyle of the surf coast. I'm not as familiar with the Peninsula but it seems more suited to retirees.

The Peninsula is amazing for everyone including the surfers, as you may already know alot of footballs live out that way including our skipper.

    Cranbourne.

Honestly I don't know why we aren't keen to make it our home. Yes it's a drive, but honestly for players who live in the Peninsula it is a quicker drive than going into the CBD.

There is ample land, and parks around, you could easily make it a recreational hub for supporters and members, and make it into a state of the art facility.

Anyone who has ever been down there knows it is absolutely enormous in terms of land and potential to expand.

It doesn't hurt that Casey is one of the fastest growing areas in Melbourne, with loads of development going on, additional roads being built and so forth. There would be massive appetite for a purpose built facility with food and beverages on offer as well, which could generate a heap of revenue for the club. Like Bentleigh Club but better.

We would be much more likely to get state funding for a development out there as it is a major growth corridor and, given Andrews is likely to win by a landside, also a major Labour stronghold he will be happy to invest in.

Even so if you could 'sell' the Peninsula life style to future players similar with what Geelong do it could be a advantage we haven't thought off?
