Last night’s game rivals Essendon’s loss in the 1999 PF as the biggest choke I’ve ever seen in a final. Essendon made a pact the following year to seek revenge, to leave no stone unturned. They didn’t even sing the club song after wins due to the bigger picture. I realise the game has changed a lot these days and little separates most clubs with facilities, preparation and sports science, whereas back then the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ were more evident. However, I whether we might head down a similar path to this and 2024 takes us to the promised land?

Carlton did the same in 1995 after a straight sets exit in 1994.

Fully agree about Alves being in the top ten. It was a dark era, but the fans went to watch him first, and then the team. So many skills, such a competitive runner - the best 'blind-turner' one could ever wish to see that produced more ground distance than our whole forward attack. Stunning kick, great speed, beautifully graceful and evasive. Almost never beaten by an opponent or the 'bash squads' that other coaches sent to him to nullify his impact.

    Agree.

The centreline of Alves, Wells, Flower and Hardeman at CHB during the 1970’s were the shining lights of a difficult decade.

Good gets Big Carl. Alan Johnson would be the 2nd wingman aside from Robbie in his top 20, but I tend to think of AJ as a back pocket.

I'm surprised that Big Carl made the top 20. Whilst he certainly scared the living daylights out of the opposition, it didn't necessarily translate to wins.

Agree. Both Alan Johnson (dual B&F) and Ditterich should be in the top 100.

Big Carl won’t be in top 20 which means he has been overlooked.

Doesn't have to name another wingman in top 20. It's not a complete team but no but no doubt we will all have our go on that one.

Reckon Stretch Sylvia maybe James Mac and possibly Stephen Febey could be a bit high. Reckon  T Mac might be a bit low and Lingers is not in out top 20

Reckon Lingers will stand up well in our Top5 wingers from 1972 in a couple of years.

Maysie is high snd really has only put together 2 years of great footy and hard to place in longevity compared with Stephen Smith as a longer term defender  who undoubtedly was hampered by hamstring injuries for the last half of his career.

Reckon we could almost pick the next 20 players but the order???

Stynes Todd and Jack Viney Robbie Flower Jeff White Mark Jamar??? Greg Wells Gary Hardemann Gary Lyon Whiz Gawny Trac Clarry Gerard Healey
Neiter Schwarta Brett Lovett Jonesy.  Brian "Wilow" Wilson.

I have forgotten at least one other player probably a ruckman or midfielder.
    Anyone???

    Ditterich

    Alan Johnson

North Hobart isnt a full sized ground. The 50m line is actually 40m and nearly overlaps the centre square.

Melbourne played Collingwood there in a preseason game in 01 or 02 and Mick Malthouse complained re: size of ground.

There is a very proud Lawn Bowl club right behind the ground that would need to make way for major changes to take place but the Lawn Bowl club has a huge history and wont be going anywhere.

Mick Malthouse complaining. What a surprise!

Who did/do you enjoy watching play footy over your time as a Demon supporter?

Here's my top 5 up to now:

    1. Robert Flower (A freak)

    2. Gary Hardeman (Tough, fair, consistent Big V player.Would have been a star in any team)

    3. David Neitz (Nothing better than watching Neita leading out from the square ,taking another great mark and converting.)

    4. Todd Viney ( Skills nothing flash , however one of the hardest ,most courageous in an under ball winners to wear the MFC jumper).

    5. Aaron Davey ( Exciting player , capable of anything )

    On pure talent alone:

    1. Robert Flower

    2. David Schwarz

    3. Allen Jakovich

Others: Gary Hardeman (very under rated), David

                   Neitz, Garry Lyon, Travis Johnstone

Good to see,    gets the ball so well,  wish he could kick the goals more consistently.

Oh for a Goal Kicking or forward coach who can fix things.  Do we have one ?

Goals win games. Why wouldn’t a previous sharpshooter who had a great kicking technique be a top priority over summer. The kicking technique of some of today’s footballers is staggering.
