Cripes. So many upsets this round. I donāt want any upsets tomorrow. I want aā¦ā¦downset?

This kind of loss can rattle a āpremiership contenderā to the core when itās this close to finals.

PREGAME: Rd 19 vs Adelaide
Sadly, not the state of merely sports-journalism. Iām a big supporter of the ABC, despite it being such a grind watching their increasingly-amateurish journalists struggle. The Age used to be a tolerable read, but that was a while back. Internationally, itās a complete mess as journalism suffers under the powers of mass consumption paired with minimal financial input (as has happened in my industry-music). While genuine journalists are asking themselves some big questions about the tenability of their vocations, they are being replaced by people who just want to partake in some vague version of āentertainmentā. But I always struggle when trying to recall any sports-related interview that gave me something resembling genuine insight, and wasnāt just guarded, predictable musings from the same old script. I think we need to exhume Jack Dyer and Lou Richards and get the coaches answering some of the real questions.

Look, I love Bowie. Heās been an inarguable legend and made a lot of his supporters very happy over the years. But he is very prone to massive dips in form. In fact itās fair to say that the thirty years between āAbsolute Beginnersā and āBlackstarā were, from both an artistic and AFL perspective, a real walk through the desert.

PODCAST: Rd 17 vs St. Kilda
Thanks for the podcast guys. As always, some much-needed cool and calculated observations. @binman it was interesting to hear your thoughts on young Koz. A lot of game-watchers (including Andy) have observed some very lacklustre moments; the half-hearted efforts, the suburban league-esque toe-pokes, the futile speccy-attempts and a general case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time when a pack-sweeper is needed etc. I can accept to a degree that he is performing a designated task, and that fatigue is also a factor in some of these instances. What Iām having trouble accepting is that theyāre a factor in all of these instances. With regard to the point you made about Montanyaās āpointā, I do see many instances where he is placed inconveniently in regards to the fall of the ball, while simultaneously well away from any position that could be deemed as āprotecting the corridorā. There does seem to be some leeway in his role to be ācreativeā when itās needed. Is it his creativity that needs some scrutiny? This creativity-allowance is best on display when he flies for yet another unrealistic speccy (and I use the term āunrealisticā because so often they arenāt even close to being successful grabs). Iām having trouble believing that his coaching staff, in combination with his supposed-discipline, are behind these attempts. The downside of these flies (and we are consistently getting two per game) is not the slightly awkward moments they create, but that they effectively take him out of some crucial seconds of the game. The more galling instances of these also see him spoiling our taller forwardsā opportunities for a more realistic chance of a mark. In the scheme of things, maybe this is more of a ābugbearā than a genuine issue. But my god does it siht me. As for fatigue, well, his lacklustre moments have been present since round four. And while he does rack up the pressure-acts stats, itās his efforts around the loose ball that Iāve observed with a degree of frustration (the goddamn toe-poke). I also am sceptical of the āpressure actā stat at times. They can sometimes flatter the player - case in point, James Harmes, who had the 2nd highest number of these against the Giants, but otherwise generally struggles to make our starting line-ups these days. Look, youāre a far more generous defender of the players than many here, and itās ultimately the admirable path, but there was no concession in the slightest that Kozzy could improve in some areas. Is there even the slightest grumble in there? Are you suggesting there isnāt the tiniest fire thatās created all the smoke? Even if that fire is located somewhere near the coaching staff? Anyway, the kid has all my support. Just want to get the best out of him.

Judd McVee and the Rising Star Award
The award for young players is being signed to an AFL squad. But if you love it, thatās great. Personally have never understood the point of highlighting the achievements of a particular sub-set of players, except to pad-out Brownlow night. If anything, Iām far more interested in players who still impress deep into their career, but I still donāt see it as necessary to create an award for them.

Judd McVee and the Rising Star Award
Iād like to see the Rising Star award scrapped altogether. Why create such a trivial distraction amongst a group of players who are all just trying to find their feet? Sure, there are particularly high-achieving players amongst them, but if theyāre genuinely special theyāll win a club B&F or Brownlow one day. Until then theyāre just players in a squad like any other.

Time to put the 'Kozzy Form Slump' bias to bed!
One of those i50 tackles (2nd quarter, 5:44 on the clock) still allowed for Byrnes to give-off to Steele mid-tackle. who managed to clear the ball (albeit ineffectively) back out of the 50. Without wanting to get too pedantic, itās interesting to see how that champion data definition doesnāt quite match up to the reality.

Iām not as confident as others may be that Fritsch potentially coming back for finals will be as much of a remedy as we hope. Foot injuries take a long time to settle and need a lot of management once the player returns. This, on top of Bailey being mercilessly struck down during a period where he was trying to regain some form, doesnāt bode well for me. Obviously would be elated to have my concerns dismissed, though.

Thanks for clarifying, and apologies for getting a bit tetchy there. You literally stated it was a question, so perhaps taking it as a comment was wrong of me (though the amount of support the question received in terms of šs seemed to bolster the idea that it was a dig at non-attendees). Thanks for your well-wishes. I havenāt been able to go to as many games as I usually attend this year (for associated reasons). Iām not allowed to yell too much when Iām watching the game with her, so itās been good for my zen.

POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs St Kilda
Would have loved to have been there, but I spent the night looking after my elderly mum after having a fall. I see this āpointā being made often after games. Itās a thoughtless and entitled line of supposed-reasoning that needs to die in a ditch. Your criticisms arenāt more valid because you were fortunate enough to go to the game. Nor are you better-placed to assess the teamās performance, unless you watched the broadcast as well.

Iāve been lectured fairly solidly by some here for calling out Pickettās performances these past couple of months. Obviously heās got a whole half of football to make amends, but if this form continues tonight, those lecturers can stick their stat sheets where the sun donāt shine.
