We were pretty good from 2017 despite missing finals and very rough around the edges but the list was building.   I just don't see the Suns list in that mould.

Like to be proven wrong though as they have stuck fat with their coach unlike others 'traditional' clubs in Victoria in disarray.

Gotta hand it to them for hanging on. We were in that boat for so long.. wasn’t until our board recruited Roos and soon after Vince (who in my view) single-handedly brought back self confidence and pride in the red and blue when it was needed most. From there, the rest is history.

I feel like Suns need a circuit breaker like that to progress.. but for now, I think they’ll continue to languish.

The point of difference with Petty and why he must go forward is the contested marking. This is more important in a forward than a back, where mobility and a spoil is at a premium.

Brown Schache and Tmac are all inferior to Petty as contested marks, and Gawn is erratic. Petty also to mind will unlock Fritsch further who as a secondary forward is lethal. Petty will also provide more forward defensive pressure than any other pressure, something Brown cannot do. Then 2nd tall is either JVR or Tmac. With Gawn resting occasionally.

It’s so simple! I did wonder throughout the year why our forward line always seemed so congested (excluding the kicking into the pocket) why our forwards found it hard to release the defender and run into space.

  3. I just hope he recognises the opportunity that he’s been given and works to not only achieve, but excel in the role that he’s been offered. He comes with talent, but needs to earn his spot and push a little harder at the chance than he indicated in his first presser (a little too confident and no immediate eye contact with the interviewer).

Watching that from front row, level 3 of the MCC was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.

If only I could have witnessed Chris Scott struggling to get that sip of water down his throat immediately after, first hand as well…

That too was my best live footy moment, sitting there with dad right behind Billy Brownless (who wasn’t particularly happy all game) in the ‘western wings’ a mile from the action that tracked east, it was fantastic - the crowd was deafening!!!

    1. We will be fitter. We won't suffer so many injuries to key players, touch wood*

    2. We will tinker with our method, I refuse to believe our coaches won't change things. They know our stars are in the window for 4 years and won't take any year for granted from now on.

    3. We will blood youth

Tbh, at some point, the board will look at the coaching staff and expect innovation

I couldn’t give a rats how popular footy is in NSW. Treat all teams equally

As a former Victorian, I actually love seeing Swans and GWS winning here in NSW as it brings more spectators to our great game. Anything that detracts from NRL is a good thing, I also like the Sydney/Melbourne rivalry.

  7. Can adversity bring a certain strength? We’ve got injury niggles, just lost on our own turf, looking at a steep climb ahead to have any chance at the flag. What can the coaches do to mentally prepare the team for what looks like a very difficult few weeks, after what was a very difficult year?

@binman and @george_on_the_outer I was surprised that you thought Papley would be the focus rather than Heeney given on paper at least, Heeney has been more damaging this year:

    Papley: 26 goals (ave 1.6), 14.9 disposals, 2.1 tackles (0.8 in f50)

    Heeney: 46 goals (ave 2.1), 17 disposals, 4.4 tackles (1.6 in f50)

Their other stats are all pretty even (intercepts, score involvements, clearances, marks, metres gained, inside 50s). Papley is ahead on GAs but overall score involvements are the same so didn't highlight it.

When Heeney is having a slow game he gets thrown around positionally, so I like the negation of his strengths and exposition of his weaknesses as a better tactic.
