It's ironic that people are upset over the cost of bringing in a pick 4 equivalent player who's playign to his potential and turfing out a pick 1 that didn't.

I know every man and his dog is trying to have their say on the matter, but i will say that keeping Watts is akin to bringing in Stringer. It's not overly necessary or earth shatteringly important. The 'icing on the cake' potential is there, but it doesn't have the final say on team-wide ultimate success. The system we're building shouldn't be overly concerned with who is on the receiving end of assists from our 1 year older midfield. Obviously goal-kicking nous is valuable, but we were doing fantastically until midseason without any stand out forwards. We only have to replicate being the #1 pressure team in the competition until round 14 again, but maintain it and build upon it. With a defensive fortress held in stead by Lever, we should be well on our way towards providing more opportunies for whoever is in the forward line. I'm tipping a surprise or two forward and in the middle to bob up in place of Watts this year. Who knows, maybe this time next year we'll all be panicking over the loss of a player like Vandenberg, Hannan or _____ to a big offer from another club/s.

Tbh, as a MFC supporter, It's safe (and sad) to say I have no idea what wins premierships. I just know that the price tag that comes with Stringer right now, after the two first round Lever trade, is far too much of a gamble for us to take. Menzel offers the same value at no cost. But I have a sneaking suspicion that we were onto something from rounds 1-14 as the #1 pressure team in the comp that had Richmond on the ropes until injuries struck. We're not in desperate need of any forward addition. A few forwards may surprise this year with the delivery from a midfield thats played together for an extra year.

I'd take a risk on half a dozen available players ahead of Stringer. We're building a team-wide system that should provide enough goal opportunities to whoever is in the forward line, and did so for the first half of the year. There was no one in spectacular form forward all year. Do we desperately need Stringer? I don't think so. These type of dreams of unearthing a Jeff Farmer-esque player that kicks a bag of goals every 2 or 3 weeks are over. Even in their premiership year, Stringer was dropped a few weeks before the finals and didn't contribute much within the finals. You could see the writing was on the wall even then. It's not about discounting individualism in favor of conformity, it's about backing your system without the pipe dream of a live-wire forward that does all the lifting. Did Richmond need Stringer? No, all they needed was Jack Riewoldt to bring the ball to ground and kick 2 or 3 goals, something that's well within Jesse Hogan's powersE Edit: Would love to bring in one more small forward with goal kicking nous, but not with Stringers price and trade tag.

Coming in here from the JW thread is like going for a sunday drive into the country side from the busy city.

It doesn't put them on an equal pedestal at all, Rance is a "4 time AA FB" and we lost an AA FB. The Frawley topic only came about due to a discussion over Motlops compensation. 3 years pertains to the time we've spent without a full back (Or elite defender) that fits into our planning going forward (ie not Dunn) and only now have we addressed a deficiency that our list management have said was our key priority. Has nothing to do with not getting over losing Frawley, just a realisation that his leaving did actually set us back which doesn't seem to be discussed around these days.

Was discussing the loss of Frawley and compensation pick value (They think he wasn't worth 3) and realised that Lever coming to us really is closure on the whole sorry saga of losing an AA FB and having to play 3 years without one and not being able to negate key forwards.

Were we not with reach of the top 4 until injuries and a tough schedule hit? These types of generalized comments undersell our list and paint everyone as a turnover merchant.

I don't think any clubs will bite on the early pick due to this perceived shallowness of the draft. Putting a Port player for Watts & Pick aside, then we could play hard ball and at least ask for some steak-knives with pick 30. A player like Justin Westhoff at 31 offers us with an immediate contested marking 3rd tall option for a year or two that can improve one of our weaknesses, if we're heading that way re talls and they should be willing to part with if they do actually really want Watts. We can at least test their willingness to get acquire him. The fall back is we keep Watts.

I just thought that perhaps we can test how much they actually want him by asking for one of their players, and adding an extra pick as a sweetener. Polec has speed as an outside running mid that gets enough of the ball, of if not him, a small forward? I don't see how pick 30 will get packaged up for a first round pick or will net us a draftee that could be of some use now and not in 3-4 years.

Why do we need a pick? Can't we leverage Watts and a pick to get a speedy player like Polec?
